🌍 The Golden Age of Jewish Prosperity Under Islamic Rule
When Muslim conquerors liberated Iberia from Visigoth tyranny in 711 CE, they ushered in an era of unprecedented tolerance. Jewish communities—long persecuted in Christian Europe—flourished under Islamic governance:

✔ Cultural Renaissance: 3,000 Hebrew poets thrived in Córdoba
✔ Political Influence: Figures like Hasdai ibn Shaprut (915-970 CE) rose to ministerial roles in the Umayyad court
✔ Intellectual Legacy: Philosophers like Maimonides (1135-1204 CE) synthesized Greek thought with Jewish theology

⚔️ The Dark Side of Jewish Power
While most Jews coexisted peacefully, a wealthy elite exploited their positions:
- Samuel ibn Naghrela (993-1056 CE), vizier of Granada, commanded Muslim armies against rival Islamic states
- His son Joseph ibn Naghrela provoked Muslim backlash by hoarding wealth and poisoning political rivals

A Turkic tribe’s 8th-century conversion to Judaism remains controversial:
- Some scholars claim Khazars became ancestors of Ashkenazi Jews

📊 Demographic Shift
By the 12th century:
✔ 93% of Jews lived in Islamic lands (mostly Al-Andalus)
✔ Only 7% resided in Christian Europe

Yet post-Reconquista, Sephardic influence waned as Ashkenazim dominated global Jewry.
