📢 "My Parents Tried to Turn Me Away from Islam"

👤 A Chinese Muslim Convert

I was born and raised in a Chinese family in Malaysia, where my parents spoke Cantonese and placed great importance on honoring our Chinese ancestors. We followed many traditional Chinese rituals and ceremonies throughout the year. However, most of my neighbors and friends were Muslims, so I grew up witnessing their faith, watching them pray, and observing their fasting during Ramadan.

By the age of 15, curiosity led me to explore the religion that surrounded me.

"I Felt Upset While Reading the Quran"

I started asking my Muslim friends questions, and they always welcomed me with open arms, patiently answering everything. One day, a friend gave me a Malay translation of the Quran.

As I began reading, I felt upset and confused—why did God say that disbelievers wouldn't enter paradise? I was a good person, I thought. Why wouldn't I be accepted?

My friend introduced me to an Islamic scholar, and after several meetings, he patiently answered all my doubts.

"Am I Not Your Lord?"

The scholar explained Allah’s mercy and how He created us. He spoke about the moment when souls were created, and Allah asked:
"Am I not your Lord?"
And the souls responded: "Yes, You are!"

This profound truth made me reflect deeply, inspiring me to continue learning about Islam. Eventually, I decided to renew my covenant with Allah and embrace Islam.

I shared my decision with my best friend, who was overjoyed. A few days later, in the presence of an imam at a mosque, I declared my shahada.

"My Parents Tried to Turn Me Away from Islam"

At first, I kept my conversion a secret, but soon I realized I had to tell my parents. They were not happy—my father was furious and accused me of betraying my Chinese identity and our ancestors.

Those months were extremely difficult. My parents tried everything to make me abandon Islam.

❌ They cooked pork every day.
❌ They encouraged me to drink alcohol.
❌ They forbade me from praying at home.
❌ They ripped off my hijab whenever I tried to wear it outside.

It was a painful struggle, but I stayed firm in my faith.

Leaving Home

I tried to be patient, respectful, and kind, as Islam teaches honoring parents. But I couldn’t trade Allah’s love for my parents' approval.

One day, I decided to leave home.

I told my best friend, and she assured me that the Muslim community would support me. Though my heart was heavy, it was also filled with light. I left home in tears but smiling, knowing Allah was guiding me.

For the next three months, I lived with different Muslim friends. Alhamdulillah, the Muslim community embraced me, even supporting me financially so I could complete my first-year university studies.

"A Family of My Own"

Years later, I tried to reconnect with my parents, but they refused to answer my calls or messages. When I finally visited them, my father simply asked:
"Why did you come back?"

He didn’t invite me inside, so I left. I continue to pray for their guidance, hoping one day, Allah will open their hearts as He did mine.

I have never regretted embracing Islam because I have found the truth.

Alhamdulillah, two years ago, I got married, and Allah blessed me with a baby boy. Now, I have a family of my own—and inshaAllah, one day, my parents will open their doors to me again.
Ameen. 🤲
