✨ Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said:

"The head of the year is the Night of Qadr (Laylat-ul-Qadr), wherein the events of the upcoming year are decreed."

🤔 Divine Consolation: "If Their Turning Away is Hard on You..." 🕳️☁️

Surah Al-An'am, Verse 35:

"And if their turning away is hard on you, then if you are able to seek a tunnel into the earth or a ladder into the sky to bring them a sign, [then do so]. But if Allah had willed, He would have gathered them upon guidance. So do not be among the ignorant." 🤲

This verse offers a profound and unique consolation to the Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وآله), addressing his deep sorrow over the disbelievers' rejection.

🧠 The Context: A Specific Incident of Grief

According to Imam al-Baqir (عليه السلام), this verse was revealed concerning a specific individual: Al-Harith ibn 'Amir ibn Nawfal. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله) sincerely desired his guidance and invited him to Islam with great effort. However, wretchedness (shiqawah) overcame Al-Harith, and he persisted in his disbelief. This rejection weighed heavily on the Prophet's heart, prompting this divine address. 😔

💡 The Deeper Meaning: Explaining the Metaphor

The Ahl al-Bayt (عليهم السلام) explained the powerful metaphors in this verse:

1️⃣ "A tunnel into the earth or a ladder into the sky..."
Imam al-Baqir (عليه السلام) clarified that this is a rhetorical way of saying: "If you are able to dig into the earth or ascend to the sky—meaning, you are not able to do that..." 🌍➡️🕳️ ☁️➡️🪜

The point is to show the Prophet the impossibility of his task. No matter how many miracles he brings, those whose hearts are sealed by Allah will not believe. Their faith cannot be forced, even by the greatest of signs.

2️⃣ The Nature of Free Will & Divine Decree
The core lesson is in the next phrase:"But if Allah had willed, He would have gathered them upon guidance."

· Imam Ali (عليه السلام) explained that Allah had decreed division and difference for this Ummah. If He had willed, He could have forced them all to believe, eliminating all disagreement. But forced belief has no value; true faith must be a choice. ⚖️
· This verse is not a reproach to the Prophet. Imam Ali (عليه السلام) defended the Prophet against critics (zanaadiqah) who used this verse to claim the Quran belittled him. The Imam stated that any apparent "fault-finding" with the Prophet in the Quran is actually a distortion propagated by the deviant. The verse's true meaning is consolation, not blame.

3️⃣ "So do not be among the ignorant."
Imam al-Baqir (عليه السلام) noted that while this command is directly addressed to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله), its meaning is for all people. It is a warning to everyone against the ignorance of grieving over what is divinely decreed and beyond one's control. The believer's duty is to convey the message, not to force its acceptance.

🧭 Key Takeaways for Us Today:

· You Can't Force Faith: A core Islamic principle is that guidance cannot be compelled. Our role is to deliver the message with wisdom and beautiful preaching; the rest is with Allah.
· Don't Grieve Over What You Can't Control: It is natural to feel sad when loved ones reject the truth. However, we must not let this grief consume us, as it is a form of ignorance against divine wisdom.
· Trust Allah's Plan: Allah's wisdom encompasses things we do not understand. What we see as rejection may be part of a larger plan. Our trust must be in His decree.
· The Decree of Division: The historical division within the Ummah was known to Allah and His Prophet. This understanding should prevent surprise and foster a focus on personal responsibility rather than despair over the state of others.

God's Covenant and the Excuses of the Israelites

The Factors of Human Rise and Fall in the Mirror of Quranic Stories from the Israelites – Part 7: The Covenant

An article based on the ethical discourse of Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi (ra) on the study of Judaism and the Israelites in the Quran.

🔷 Key Points:

· This section examines the extraordinary event of God raising Mount Tur (Sinai) above the Israelites as they entered into a solemn covenant (Mithaq) to uphold the Torah (Quran 2:63, 7:171). This miraculous sign was to impress upon them the gravity of their pledge.
· Despite this, the Israelites' deep-rooted materialism and skepticism soon resurfaced in the famous story of the Cow (Al-Baqarah). When commanded to slaughter a cow to solve a murder mystery, they responded with mockery, delay, and a barrage of trivial questions about the cow's specifications.
· Their behavior exemplifies evasion, bad faith, and a lack of seriousness towards divine commands. By making the task difficult for themselves, they ended up having to purchase a uniquely specified cow at great cost.
· The miracle of reviving the murdered man by striking him with a piece of the cow was a direct divine response, demonstrating God's power over life and death and His ability to unveil hidden truths.
· Lessons for the Believing Community:
1. Faith in the Unseen: The story warns against excessive dependence on the tangible and materialism, which can lead to skepticism towards miracles, prophethood, and divine wisdom. The Quran states the first quality of the pious is faith in the unseen.
2. The Primacy of Keeping Covenants: God holds the Israelites accountable not just by the inherent evil of murder, but by their breach of the covenant they made. This underscores that fulfilling promises and covenants is the cornerstone of social trust and stability.
3. Beware of God's "Deception" (Makr): God may conceal sins, but when people try to deceive Him, oppress others, or mock His commands, He can seize them suddenly and publicly as a deterrent lesson for all. One should fear being seized by God's "plan" while heedless.
