From the God-Kings of Egypt to the Custodian of the World

The Factors of Human Rise and Fall in the Mirror of Quranic Stories from the Israelites – Part 1: The God-Kings of Egypt

An article based on the ethical discourse of Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi (ra) on the study of Judaism and the Israelites in the Quran.

🔷 Key Points:

· The Quran extensively uses the stories of Bani Israel (the Israelites), particularly the narrative of Prophet Musa (Moses) and Pharaoh, to offer profound lessons for individual, social, and political life.
· The story begins by highlighting Pharaoh's core flaw: 'Uluw (Arrogance and Seeking Superiority). This is distinct from the natural human desire for self-perfection (Kamal Talabi).
· To maintain his dominance, Pharaoh employed a classic tool of oppression: creating division (جَعَلَ أَهْلَهَا شِیَعًا) and weakening segments of society, establishing a system of oppressors (Mustakbireen) and oppressed (Mustad'afeen).
· The Quran strongly condemns this societal corruption and warns against it. This dynamic isn't limited to individuals; it can manifest on a global scale between nations.
· The analysis draws a parallel: Just as an individual Pharaoh arose saying "I am your supreme lord," today we witness a social/global Pharaoh – a powerful entity (like the United States is presented as an example) that seeks to dominate the world, declaring itself the "custodian of the world" and employing similar divisive and oppressive strategies.

This is a timeless lesson: The path to tyranny begins with arrogance and is built upon sowing discord. Preserving unity and rejecting oppression are essential for any society's dignity and salvation.

Roots of the Social Corruptions of the Israelites

The Factors of Human Rise and Fall in the Mirror of Quranic Stories from the Israelites – Part 2: Social Corruptions

An article based on the ethical discourse of Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi (ra) on the study of Judaism and the Israelites in the Quran.

🔷 Key Points:

· The narrative shifts to a new chapter after the Israelites' salvation from Pharaoh. Despite witnessing God's mighty signs and their miraculous deliverance, they soon exhibit a shocking request.
· Upon encountering idol-worshippers engaged in seemingly pleasant rituals, the Israelites ask Prophet Musa (Moses): "Make for us a god just as they have gods." (Quran 7:138). This reveals a deep-seated psychological flaw.
· The core issue is identified as blind imitation and herd mentality – a desire to conform to others, even in falsehood, simply because their way appears attractive or fashionable. This is a "disease of trend-following" that ignores reason and one's own blessed identity.
· Prophet Musa's response is profound: "Indeed, you are a people behaving ignorantly." (7:139). Here, "ignorance" (Jahl) refers not to lack of knowledge, but to irrational, thoughtless action – abandoning reason.
· He reminds them of God's favor upon them, asking why they would forsake the One who saved and exalted them for powerless idols. The analysis warns against following other cultures in their false aspects while neglecting our own truths and divine blessings.
· Critical Lesson: When confronting social corruption, we must first diagnose its root cause—often irrational imitation. True progress requires discerning emulation: adopting what is good and beneficial from others while firmly rejecting baseless practices that contradict reason and divine guidance.

The Role of Blind Imitation and Weak Intellectual Foundations in the Deviation of the Israelites

The Factors of Human Rise and Fall in the Mirror of
Quranic Stories from the Israelites – Part 3: Weak Intellectual Foundations

An article based on the ethical discourse of Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi (ra) on the study of Judaism and the Israelites in the Quran.

🔷 Key Points:

· After salvation from Pharaoh, a new test begins for the Israelites: "So that He might observe how you would act." (Quran 7:129). Victory is not the end, but the start of a new trial of gratitude and obedience.
· The Israelites' shocking request for an idol, despite witnessing God's miracles, exposes a critical flaw: weak, inherited faith not based on firm intellectual foundations. Their belief was more about tradition than deep conviction.
· This leads to blind imitation – a natural human tendency that, when unchecked by reason, becomes a major source of deviation. They desired to imitate others simply because their practices looked attractive, without rational scrutiny.
· Prophet Musa (AS) countered this by urging them to think: "Indeed, you are a people behaving ignorantly [irrationally]." (7:139). He reminded them of God's favor and the absurdity of worshiping man-made idols.
· Timeless Lesson for Us: Just like the Israelites, societies that are granted victory and divine favor enter a phase where God observes their actions (فَیَنظُرَ کیْفَ تَعْمَلُونَ). Will we be grateful and uphold divine commandments, or will we, in our comfort, imitate the ways of opposing powers (like the desire to be "like America") and neglect our religious duties under modern pretexts?
· The Quran warns that nations who become ungrateful and forgetful after ease are seized suddenly while they are unaware. Our intellectual and religious foundations must be strong enough to withstand the tests of victory and the temptations of blind imitation.

The Sedition of Samiri and the Importance of Preserving Unity

The Factors of Human Rise and Fall in the Mirror of
Quranic Stories from the Israelites – Part 4: Samiri

An article based on the ethical discourse of Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi (ra) on the study of Judaism and the Israelites in the Quran.

🔷 Key Points:

· During Prophet Musa's (AS) 40-day absence to receive the Torah, a critical trial befell the Israelites. Samiri, exploiting the leadership vacuum, crafted a golden calf and led a major segment of the people into idolatry.
· This incident reveals a deep flaw in the Israelites: a strong inclination towards sensualism and materialism. They struggled with non-tangible concepts and even demanded to see God physically. This made them susceptible to the tangible idol Samiri presented.
· The Quran narrates this not as mere history, but as a timeless lesson for all communities with divine responsibility. Weakness in faith and intellectual foundations can lead a nation, even after experiencing miracles, into grave deviation when faced with clever sedition.
· Critical Lessons Derived:
1. The Imperative of Sound Belief: Communities must proactively strengthen their core theological and intellectual foundations, especially the youth, to withstand modern doubts and temptations spread through global media.
2. The Vitality of Leadership: No society should be left without righteous leadership. Prophet Musa appointed a successor (Harun) before his absence. The absence or neglect of legitimate, qualified leadership leaves a community vulnerable to corruption and division. The discussion extends to the Islamic concept of leadership (Imamah/Wilayah) and the necessity of following the most qualified successor in the absence of the Imam.
3. Preserving Unity as a Social Priority: When confronted by Prophet Musa, Harun explained he feared causing division (fitnah) among the people by using excessive force. This highlights that maintaining social unity is itself a major social interest (maslahah), even while confronting deviance. Leadership requires wisdom to balance correction with cohesion.

Comfort-Seeking and Treaty-Breaking of the Israelites

The Factors of Human Rise and Fall in the Mirror of
Quranic Stories from the Israelites – Part 5: Treaty-Breaking

An article based on the ethical discourse of Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi (ra) on the study of Judaism and the Israelites in the Quran.

🔷 Key Points:

· This episode reveals another critical flaw in the Israelites: excessive comfort-seeking and aversion to hardship. After being commanded by God to enter the Holy Land (al-Quds), they refused, citing the strength of its inhabitants.
· They audaciously told Prophet Musa (AS): "Go, you and your Lord, and fight. Indeed, we are remaining right here." (Quran 5:24). This highlights their profound weakness of faith, ingratitude, and breach of covenant with God.
· Their disobedience stemmed from a desire for ease, unwilling to engage in the necessary struggle (jihad). Consequently, God decreed they would wander aimlessly in the desert for forty years, barred from their destined home.
· The Quran narrates this as a stark warning about the gravity of breaking one's covenant with God. If breaching human contracts is condemned universally, how much more severe is breaching a pledge to the Creator upon whom our entire existence depends?
· Lessons for the Believing Community:
· Our declaration of "We hear and we obey" (سَمِعْنَا وَأَطَعْنَا) upon accepting Islam is a solemn covenant. We must be vigilant in fulfilling it, especially when divine commands require sacrifice or struggle.
· The story underscores the necessity of obedience to divine authority and leadership. Just as a flock needs a shepherd, a community needs a righteous guide to avoid misguidance. In the absence of the Infallible Imam (AS), this duty falls upon the most qualified jurist (Faqih) who resembles him in knowledge and justice.
· The core of religion is obedience to God (Ta'ah), not the pursuit of personal comfort or opinion. True human perfection is achieved only under the shadow of divine obedience.

The Israelites and the Illusion of Being the 'Chosen People'

The Factors of Human Rise and Fall in the Mirror of
Quranic Stories from the Israelites – Part 6: Chosen People Illusion

An article based on the ethical discourse of Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi (ra) on the study of Judaism and the Israelites in the Quran.

🔷 Key Points:

· This section examines a dangerous mindset prevalent among the Israelites: the illusion of being the exclusive 'Chosen People' (شعب مختار). They believed statements like, "We are the children of Allah and His beloved ones" (Quran 5:18), fostering a sense of arrogant exceptionalism.
· This illusion manifested in ingratitude and constant complaint despite receiving extraordinary divine favors: shade from clouds, heavenly food (Manna & Salwa), water from twelve springs. Yet, they complained about the monotony of food, demanding a more varied diet.
· Their arrogance led them to believe divine punishment would only lightly touch them ("The Fire will not touch us except for a few days" – 2:80). They saw their status as an irrevocable guarantee, not a responsibility.
· Critical Lessons for Believers:
1. Beware of Spiritual Arrogance: Merely belonging to the "right" religion or community (like Shia Islam) is not a free pass. True adherence means emulating the obedience and piety of the Ahl al-Bayt (AS), not just claiming their love. As Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, "Whoever is obedient to Allah is our friend, and whoever is disobedient to Allah is our enemy."
2. Gratitude Over Entitlement: Divine blessings increase responsibility, not entitlement. The gravest slip is self-deceiving pride (ghurur) that makes one feel secure from accountability.
3. Avoid Generalization: Even within a largely condemned community, God recognizes the righteous exceptions (like the two God-fearing men among the Israelites). We must be just in our judgments and not tar everyone with the same brush.

God's Covenant and the Excuses of the Israelites

The Factors of Human Rise and Fall in the Mirror of
Quranic Stories from the Israelites – Part 7: The Covenant

An article based on the ethical discourse of Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi (ra) on the study of Judaism and the Israelites in the Quran.

🔷 Key Points:

· This section examines the extraordinary event of God raising Mount Tur (Sinai) above the Israelites as they entered into a solemn covenant (Mithaq) to uphold the Torah (Quran 2:63, 7:171). This miraculous sign was to impress upon them the gravity of their pledge.
· Despite this, the Israelites' deep-rooted materialism and skepticism soon resurfaced in the famous story of the Cow (Al-Baqarah). When commanded to slaughter a cow to solve a murder mystery, they responded with mockery, delay, and a barrage of trivial questions about the cow's specifications.
· Their behavior exemplifies evasion, bad faith, and a lack of seriousness towards divine commands. By making the task difficult for themselves, they ended up having to purchase a uniquely specified cow at great cost.
· The miracle of reviving the murdered man by striking him with a piece of the cow was a direct divine response, demonstrating God's power over life and death and His ability to unveil hidden truths.
· Lessons for the Believing Community:
1. Faith in the Unseen: The story warns against excessive dependence on the tangible and materialism, which can lead to skepticism towards miracles, prophethood, and divine wisdom. The Quran states the first quality of the pious is faith in the unseen.
2. The Primacy of Keeping Covenants: God holds the Israelites accountable not just by the inherent evil of murder, but by their breach of the covenant they made. This underscores that fulfilling promises and covenants is the cornerstone of social trust and stability.
3. Beware of God's "Deception" (Makr): God may conceal sins, but when people try to deceive Him, oppress others, or mock His commands, He can seize them suddenly and publicly as a deterrent lesson for all. One should fear being seized by God's "plan" while heedless.

The Sabbath-Breakers and Playing with God's Religion

The Factors of Human Rise and Fall in the Mirror of
Quranic Stories from the Israelites – Part 8: The Sabbath-Breakers

An article based on the ethical discourse of Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi (ra) on the study of Judaism and the Israelites in the Quran.

🔷 Key Points:

· This section examines the severe punishment of a group of Israelites who lived by the sea. God forbade them from fishing on the Sabbath (Saturday) as a test. Observing that fish abundantly approached the shore only on that day, they devised a clever legal trick (Hilah):
· They dug trenches on Friday, let water (and fish) flow in on Saturday, and blocked the exits, then harvested the fish on Sunday, claiming they didn't "fish" on the Sabbath.
· God's response was swift and shocking: He transformed the transgressors and those who remained silent into despised apes (مسخ). This story appears multiple times in the Quran as a grave warning.
· Key Lessons Derived:
1. Playing with Divine Commands is Forbidden: The core sin was not just a technical violation, but attempting to deceive God and mock His law through legal loopholes (Hiyal). This is far more severe than open disobedience. The analysis asks: Are some of our modern-day "Sharia-compliant" tricks in financial dealings (like disguised usury/Riba) not of the same nature?
2. The Obligation of Enjoining Good & Forbidding Evil (Amr bil Ma'ruf): God punished not only the tricksters but also those who saw the wrong and remained silent, failing to enjoin good and forbid evil. This highlights the communal responsibility and the major sin of indifference.
3. God Has No Favorites: Despite the Israelites being favored with many prophets, God showed no partiality when they willfully mocked His decrees. Even the greatest of creatures have no special immunity if they compromise divine law.

Lessons from the Story of Talut and Jalut

The Factors of Human Rise and Fall in the Mirror of
Quranic Stories from the Israelites – Part 9: Talut and Jalut

An article based on the ethical discourse of Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi (ra) on the study of Judaism and the Israelites in the Quran.

🔷 Key Points:

· The story of Talut (Saul) and Jalut (Goliath), narrated in Surah Al-Baqarah (verses 246-251), offers profound lessons on leadership, faith, and social order. After suffering oppression, a faction of Israelites asked their prophet, Samuel, to appoint a king to lead them in battle.
· When God appointed Talut, a man not from a prominent wealthy family, they objected, revealing their materialistic criteria for leadership: "How can he have kingship over us when we are more deserving... and he has not been given ample wealth?"
· Their lack of discipline and comfort-seeking was tested when Talut forbade drinking from a river except a handful. Most failed the test. Only a small, faithful remnant, who trusted in God's help and prayed for patience and steadfastness, remained.
· From this small group emerged Dawud (David), who, with divine support, defeated the giant Jalut, paving the way for his own kingship and the establishment of the Israelite monarchy.
· Key Lessons Derived:
1. The Necessity of Centralized Authority: Human social progress (Tamaddun) inherently requires centralized governance and leadership to achieve unity, resolve conflicts, and facilitate growth. The Israelites' realization of this need marked a social evolution.
2. Divine Rule of Balancing Forces: The Quran states a fundamental cosmic and social rule: "If Allah did not check one set of people by means of another, the earth would indeed be full of mischief." (2:251). This necessitates the existence of defensive power and just authority to prevent corruption and oppression from prevailing completely.
3. Materialism as a Spiritual Disease: The Israelites' objection to Talut exposed their deep-seated materialism and wealth-worship, viewing riches as the primary measure of worth—a trait critically examined in their historical and contemporary conduct.
4. Self-Discipline as a Prerequisite for Victory: Talut's river test was a training in self-restraint. True success in struggle (like Jihad) requires prior spiritual and physical training and self-discipline to overcome comfort-seeking and build resilience—a wisdom also found in fasting (Sawm).
