🔷 Verse 153 of Surah Āl ʿImrān – A Thematic Analysis with Tafsir, Narrations, Wilāyah & Mahdawī Perspective
📚 Part of the ongoing project: Explaining the Quranic Verses through the Lens of Mahdism and Wilāyah

📖 The Verse:

"[Remember] when you were fleeing and climbing the mountain, without looking back at anyone, while the Messenger was calling you from behind. Then Allah rewarded you with sorrow upon sorrow so that you would not grieve over what you had missed or what had befallen you. And Allah is All-Aware of what you do."
[Surah Āl ʿImrān – 3:153]

🔎 Narrative & Wilāyah-based Insights:

1. According to the narration by ʿAlī ibn Ibrāhīm, during the Battle of Uhud, all companions fled except for Imam ʿAlī (a.s.) and one helper from the Anṣār. The verse refers to this very incident, highlighting Imam ʿAlī’s unwavering loyalty.
📚 Tafsīr Ahl al-Bayt, vol. 2, p. 794; Bihār al-Anwār, vol. 20, p. 113

2. Similarly, during the Treaty of Ḥudaybiyyah, many companions opposed the Prophet’s decision. The Prophet (PBUH) reminded them of their cowardice at Uhud to emphasize the importance of submission during divine trials.

3. The Prophet (PBUH) even referenced this verse during his dialogue with ʿUmar at Ḥudaybiyyah, saying: "Have you forgotten the day of Uhud, when you were fleeing and I was calling you back?"

🔭 Mahdawī Reflection:

This verse and related narrations help us discern between the true companions and the unfaithful claimants. Just as many fled at Uhud and only ʿAlī (a.s.) stood firm, during the Era of Reappearance, many will be sifted through trials, and only the sincere will remain by the side of Imam al-Mahdī (aj).

The phrase "sorrow upon sorrow" (غَمّاً بِغَمٍّ) teaches us that abandoning the Divine Representative (Walī Allāh) results in spiritual loss and grief. This is a vital lesson for our loyalty to the Imam of our time.

The message is clear: salvation lies in staying with the Divine Proof, not in fleeing or questioning divine decree—just as the Prophet’s companions eventually regretted and recognized their error.

✨ Conclusion:

✅ This verse highlights the distinction between steadfast companions and the wavering claimants.
✅ The narrations reaffirm Imam ʿAlī (a.s.) as the model of unwavering loyalty amidst chaos.
✅ For the awaiters of Imam al-Mahdī (aj), the verse calls for endurance and loyalty during End-Time trials.
✅ Let us not be like the deserters of Uhud, but rather like ʿAlī (a.s.), who stood firm until the end with the Divine Guide.
