🔎 Quranic Verse 4:36 — A Wilāyah-Based Interpretation with a Mahdavi Outlook ✨
📖 Surah al-Nisā’ – Verse 36
﴿وَاعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ وَلا تُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شَيْئًا وَبِالْوَالِدَيْنِ إِحْسَانًا...﴾
Translation:
Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and be kind to your parents, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near and distant neighbors, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those under your authority. Verily, Allah does not love the arrogant and boastful.
📚 Narrative & Wilāyah-Based Reflection
1️⃣ “Parents” (الوالدَين) — The Prophet ﷺ and Imam Ali (as)
Imams al-Bāqir and al-Sādiq (peace be upon them) interpreted "parents" in this verse as referring to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Imam Ali (as).
🗣 The Prophet said: “I and Ali are the fathers of this nation.”
In the sermon of Ghadir, the Prophet likened his Wilāyah to the guardianship of a father, making obedience to Imam Ali as obligatory as to one’s own parents.
2️⃣ “Relatives, Orphans, the Needy” — The Ahl al-Bayt (as)
According to Ahl al-Bayt (as), these titles specifically refer to them. Imam al-Bāqir (as) said: “We are the Dhū al-Qurbā, the orphan, and the needy — what belongs to the Prophet belongs to us.”
In deeper interpretation, “orphan” refers to those deprived of Wilāyah, and “needy” to those lacking spiritual nourishment from the Imams.
🌅 Mahdavi Outlook: The Verse and Awaiting the Imam
✅ This verse outlines a deep structure of an Ummah founded on Wilāyah:
1. Pure monotheism starts the verse, rejecting all forms of Shirk, especially in leadership — meaning not associating false authorities with divine Imams.
2. Immediately following Tawhīd is the command to honor the "parents" — referring to the Prophet and Imam Ali (as). This teaches that true obedience to God extends through Wilāyah.
3. Mentioning “relatives, orphans, and the needy” highlights the central role of the Ahl al-Bayt (as) in the social and spiritual framework of Islam. Imam al-Mahdi (aj) is the ultimate heir of this divine legacy.
4. This verse becomes a foundation for Mahdavi Wilāyah, reminding us that a community that ignores the rights of its "true parents" (the Prophet and Imam Ali) can never be ready for the reappearance of their son — Imam Mahdi (aj).
5. “The traveler” (ابن السبیل) can symbolically refer to those lost in search of truth, waiting for guidance — a metaphor for the global community awaiting the Imam (aj) to complete their journey to divine justice.
🧭 Conclusion
🔹 Surah al-Nisā’, verse 36 paints a spiritual blueprint for a Wilāyah-centered society.
🔹 With the Ahl al-Bayt’s interpretation, the verse teaches that the path to faith, justice, and humanity must pass through obedience to the Imams (as).
🔹 A true awaiter of Imam Mahdi (aj) is one who recognizes, loves, and implements these teachings — embracing the Imams like one embraces a loving father.
