📖 The Rise of the Rothschild Dynasty (Part 1)

🌍 A “Key Factor” in the Modern World
Historian Paul Johnson (📘 The Birth of the Modern World, 1991) calls the Rothschilds “a key factor in the making of the new world.”
Goethe (1749–1832) once wrote in 1828:
But Goethe was wrong. The Rothschild phenomenon was not a family “miracle” but part of a much older international network—operating like a secretive political-religious order.
✡️ Rousseau’s Remarkable Observation
In the mid-18th century, Jean-Jacques Rousseau described the Jewish collective as:
This transnational network later turned into the backbone of modern global finance, with the Rothschild Foundation as its most prominent symbol.
🏠 From Frankfurt’s Judengasse
The earliest known ancestor: Isaac Elhanan (d. 1585, Frankfurt).
He lived on Judengasse (the Jewish Street), where Jewish homes were marked by signs rather than numbers.
His house bore a “Red Shield” (Rot-schildt), which became the family’s lasting name.
By the 18th century, Frankfurt was a bustling city of 35,000—about 10% Jewish—where Jewish merchants dominated trade.
👤 Mayer Amschel Rothschild (1744–1812)
Born in Frankfurt, son of Amschel Moses Rothschild.
Began as a money-changer and dealer in antique coins.
At 20, connected with William, Crown Prince of Hesse-Kassel, an avid collector of coins.
By 1769, became William’s official court agent.
Through Carl Frederick Buderus, William’s trusted advisor, Rothschild grew into the prince’s chief financial handler.
📌 Importantly, Mayer Amschel did not rise from “poverty to riches” by miracle. He already belonged to a wealthy Jewish family, whose in-laws (the Schnapper family) had deep ties to the princely courts of Germany.
⚔️ The Napoleonic Era
The French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars provided the Rothschilds with unprecedented opportunities.
By 1785, Mayer Amschel was wealthy enough to move into a three-story mansion, shared with the Schiff family (whose descendant, Jacob Schiff, later became one of the most powerful financiers in the U.S.).
This was the true beginning of the Rothschild rise to global prominence.

In the mid-18th century, Jean-Jacques Rousseau described the Jewish collective as:
“Athens, Sparta, and Rome have vanished without a trace. But Zion, though destroyed, has not lost its children. They multiply, mix among nations but never disappear. They remain always a people—without rulers, yet still a nation.”
This transnational network later turned into the backbone of modern global finance, with the Rothschild Foundation as its most prominent symbol.
