Rahyafte (The Guided Ones)
π· ANOTHER CASE OF DELETION & CENSORSHIP: THE EVENTS OF SAQΔͺFA ββββββββββββββββββ πΈ What happens when the sources themselves disappear? The problem of early Islamic historiography is not limited to the transmission of hadith. A much bigger question concernsβ¦
Some reports connect the Ridda conflicts not simply with rejection of Islam, but with refusal to accept the political authority established after the Prophetβs death, refusal to pay certain obligations, or disputes over allegiance.
Therefore, historians must ask:
β Who was actually considered a βrebelβ?
β Who was called an βapostateβ?
β Was every such designation purely theological β or could political considerations also have played a role?
These are not questions to be answered by slogans.
They require source criticism.
ββββββββββββββββββ
π’ The real lesson is methodological.
When early books disappear, we should not automatically conclude:
β βThe event never happened.β
But neither should we conclude:
β βEvery surviving quotation must be authentic.β
Instead:
β Examine the earliest surviving references.
β Trace quotations back to their alleged sources.
β Compare Sunni and ShiΚΏi transmissions.
β Study the isnΔds.
β Examine the political context.
β Distinguish lost sources from fabricated reports.
β Ask why certain narratives survived while others disappeared.
ββββββββββββββββββ
π· History is not only about the books we possess.
It is also about the books we lost.
And sometimes, the most important historical question is not:
but:
βWhat happened to the evidence that once existed?β
π When the original books disappear, fragments become witnesses.
