The Concept of Imamate and Succession: A Divine Responsibility The question of leadership after the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) has been a central theological issue in Islamic history. Shia Muslims believe that just as the Prophet is divinely appointed by Allah…
Why Divine Appointment Is Necessary

1. Imam Ali’s Rightful Leadership:
Had the Prophet’s explicit instruction at Ghadir Khumm been followed, the disunity and conflicts that have plagued the Ummah might have been avoided.

2. The Role of Imams in Guiding the Ummah:
Shia Muslims believe the Imams are divinely chosen guides who ensure the preservation of Islam’s teachings, just as the Prophet did. Their infallibility (Ismah) makes them immune to the corruption and errors that often plague human-selected leaders.

3. Unity and Justice:
A divinely chosen leader, like Imam Mahdi, ensures unity and justice for the Ummah. When leadership is left to human decision, it often leads to division, as seen in historical schisms and the rise of unjust rulers.

The Shia belief in divine appointment for succession ensures continuity of divine guidance and protects the Ummah from corruption and deviation. History has shown the dangers of relying solely on human methods to choose leaders, as it often leads to un-Islamic practices, betrayal of the faith, and division within the community. As Muslims await the return of Imam Mahdi (AS), they should reflect on the principles of divine leadership and strive to uphold justice and truth in their personal and collective lives.
