📖 Quranic Insight: Surah Al-Ma'idah, Verse 68
"Say, 'O People of the Scripture! You stand on nothing until you uphold the Torah, the Gospel, and what has been revealed to you from your Lord.' But surely, what has been sent down to you from your Lord will increase many of them in rebellion and disbelief. So do not grieve for the disbelieving people." (5:68)
🔍 Key Teachings from the Ahlulbayt (AS)
1️⃣ Imam Baqir (AS) explains:
This verse refers to the Wilayah (guardianship) of Imam Ali (AS). The true fulfillment of the Torah and Gospel lies in accepting the divine leadership appointed by Allah. (Bihar al-Anwar, Vol. 36, p. 95)
2️⃣ Imam Ali (AS) on the Prophet’s (PBUH) Grief:
The Prophet (PBUH) was saddened by the stubbornness of the disbelievers, but Allah consoled him:
"Do not let your soul perish out of grief for them" (35:8).
"Do not grieve for the disbelieving people" (5:68).
(Bihar al-Anwar, Vol. 65, p. 267)
3️⃣ Ibn Abbas (RA) narrates:
A group of Jews came to the Prophet (PBUH) and said, *"We believe in the Torah but reject anything beyond it."* This verse was revealed in response to their arrogance. (Noor al-Thaqalayn)
💡 Lessons from the Verse:
✔️ True faith requires upholding ALL divine revelations, not selective obedience.
✔️ Rejecting divine guidance leads to increased rebellion—truth often hardens stubborn hearts.
✔️ Do not despair over those who reject faith—Allah’s justice will prevail.

Divine Warning Against Spiritual Blindness
Surah Al-Ma'idah, Verse 71
"They thought there would be no punishment, so they turned blind and deaf. Then Allah turned to them in forgiveness, yet again many of them turned blind and deaf. And Allah is All-Seeing of what they do." (5:71)
🔍 Teachings from the Ahlulbayt (AS)
1. The Cycle of Guidance and Rejection
Imam Sadiq (AS) explains:
- During the Prophet’s (PBUH) lifetime, people willfully ignored the truth ("they turned blind and deaf").
- After his passing, their rejection deepened—until Imam Ali (AS) assumed leadership, when Allah granted them a chance to repent.
- Yet, many persisted in their spiritual blindness until the Day of Judgment.
(Al-Kafi, Vol. 8, p. 199 | Tafsir Ahlulbayt, Vol. 4, p. 178)
2. The Prophet’s (PBUH) Final Warning
Ibn Mas’ud narrates:
Before his death, the Prophet (PBUH) asked:
"Who will you turn to after me?"
When Ibn Mas’ud listed companions, the Prophet (PBUH) wept and said:
"Why did you not prioritize Ali (AS)? On Judgment Day, the first banner raised will be mine—held by Ali (AS), while all humanity stands beneath it!"
This verse was revealed about those who denied the test of Imam Ali’s (AS) Wilayah.
(Bihar al-Anwar, Vol. 37, p. 345)
3. A Tragic Example of Hypocrisy
Imam Ali (AS) received a report about:
- A newly converted Muslim (Zadhan Farrokh) who testified to Ali’s (AS) leadership.
- A group attacked and murdered him for this belief—yet spared a Jewish non-Muslim traveling with him!
Imam Ali (AS) condemned them, comparing them to those in the verse:
"They assumed no trial would come, so they chose blindness."
(Bihar al-Anwar, Vol. 33, p. 408)
💡 Key Lessons
✔ Willful Ignorance Leads to Punishment – Rejecting truth despite clear signs hardens the heart.
✔ Divine Mercy is Conditional – Allah forgives, but repeated arrogance brings eternal loss.
✔ The Test of Leadership – Accepting Imam Ali (AS) was (and remains) a criterion of true faith.
🌹 Reflection:
Do we see and hear the truth—or have we become "blind and deaf" to divine guidance in our own time?
