Humans are quite bad at detecting AI-generated texts 🤖📄. But they can learn it. Even a few couples of trials and errors are sufficient to improve this skill by ten percentage points 📈. Also, humans are terrible at estimating how bad they are at this task 🤔, but they can learn it as well.

Learning to detect AI texts and learning the limits
This study investigates whether individuals can learn to accurately discriminate between human-written and AI-produced texts when provided with immediate feedback, and if they can use this feedback to recalibrate their self-perceived competence. We also explore…

Researchers developed a 15–20-minute training programme that improves people’s ability to distinguish between real and AI-generated faces, with performance improving from below chance to above chance, while computer models trained on the same cues reached…
🎓 University of Southampton researchers have created DISCERN-AI, a 15-20 minute training program that significantly improves people's ability to distinguish between real and AI-generated faces. A study published in Computers in Human Behaviour found the training boosted accuracy even 20 days later.
🧠 The training corrects common misperceptions, teaching users that proportionate, familiar, or perfectly polished images might be AI-generated, while distinctive, quirky images are more likely to be real. It also advises against relying on perceived "red flags" like smooth skin or smiling.
📊 In tests, over 600 participants showed improved performance from below-chance to above-chance levels after DISCERN-AI training. Researchers aim to make this training accessible online soon.
