Scientists unveil more than 600 new tissue models of human cancer: « Derived from patient tumor samples and available to researchers around the world, the cells will aid the development of new cancer treatments. » Read Full Article #CancerResearch #TumorModels…
🔬 Nearly 700 new cancer models, derived from patient tumors representing 25 cancer types, have been developed by an international research team.

🔬 These models, primarily organoids (3D cell cultures), mimic the genetic and molecular traits of original tumors and are now available to researchers globally.

🔬 The initiative, a 10-year project funded by the National Cancer Institute and the UK's Wellcome Trust, involved over two dozen institutions and aimed to significantly expand the availability of patient-derived cancer models.

🔬 Researchers analyzed over 2,700 tumor samples from patients in the US, UK, and Netherlands, successfully converting about one-third into long-lasting lab models.

Glioma, a Type of Cancer that Hijacks Brain Activity to Fuel Its Growth. Scientists have uncovered one of the mechanisms in mice that makes this exploitation possible and believe the identification of this mechanism could create new opportunities for treatment.…
🧠 Scientists have uncovered a mechanism gliomas use to exploit brain functions for growth.

🔬 A protein called neuroligin-3 (NLGN3) binds to CSPG4 on glioma cells, tightening the cell membrane and activating PIEZO1, a channel that signals for cell proliferation.

🐭 Glioma cells lacking PIEZO1 showed significantly less proliferation in mice, suggesting PIEZO1 is crucial for their growth.

💡 This mechanism is also present in healthy brain cells (OPCs), where it helps maintain a reserve of immature cells. Glioma cells appear to hijack this normal process.

🔬 Caltech study challenges cancer paradigm: High cell proliferation may be protective against tumor growth by enabling "proofreading" to destroy potentially cancerous cells.

🔬 Mathematical models and experiments with cancer-resistant jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) suggest that rapid cell turnover can act as a quality control mechanism.

🔬 Disrupting cell proliferation or cell death in jellyfish exposed to carcinogens led to abnormal growths, supporting the idea that proliferation is key to preventing neoplasia.

🔬 The findings, published August 18 in PNAS, propose a new cancer prevention strategy focusing on enhancing the body's natural proofreading system.

Cancer cells release antioxidants to prevent immune cells from destroying them Read Full Article #CancerResearch #Immunotherapy #Antioxidants
🔬 Scientists discovered that cancer cells release natural antioxidants (like PRDX1) to deactivate immune cells (T cells) that are supposed to destroy them.

🔬 T cells actually need reactive oxygen species (molecules that were previously thought to be damaging) to activate and fight cancer. Tumors exploit this by releasing antioxidants to "smother" T cells.

🔬 In lab studies using mice, blocking cancer cells' ability to produce these antioxidants made them more responsive to existing cancer immunotherapies.

🔬 This new understanding could lead to ways to improve cancer immunotherapies, potentially by using "pro-oxidants" to boost T cell activity, rather than antioxidants, which might inadvertently harm the immune response.

A 3-Year-Old's Metastatic Cancer Disappeared After Two Doses of Experimental Therapy: Complete regression of hepatoblastoma, a malignant liver cancer and chemotherapy-resistant solid tumor, after CAR T cell treatment, achieved entirely in the outpatient setting…
✨ Cancer Breakthrough: CAR T-Cell Therapy Shows Promise Against Solid Tumors
A 3-year-old boy with advanced liver cancer (hepatoblastoma) achieved complete remission with an experimental CAR T-cell therapy, a significant step as this treatment has historically been limited to blood cancers. The therapy genetically engineers a patient's immune cells to fight cancer.

🔬 Personalized Treatment Targets Rare Cancer
The boy, whose cancer had spread to his lungs and potentially bones, received two doses of GPC3-CAR T-cell therapy, an experimental treatment designed to recognize a protein common in liver cancers. This approach, detailed in The New England Journal of Medicine, is showing potentially life-saving results for solid tumors, even in a chemotherapy-resistant case.

🌟 Hope for Durable Remission
After receiving the CAR T-cell infusions, the boy showed a partial response and, eight weeks later, follow-up scans revealed no remaining signs of disease except for scarring. He remained disease-free 12 months later, demonstrating the potential for durable responses outside of traditional chemotherapy.

Engineered Probiotic Wipes Out 43% of Colorectal Tumors in Mice: The engineered E Coli packed a triple-whammy – chemotherapy produced directly inside the tumor, an immune stimulant, and a localized form of immune checkpoint blockade. Read Full Article …
🔬 Scientists have engineered probiotic bacteria (E. coli Nissle 1917) to act as tiny drug factories within tumors, producing chemotherapy while stimulating the immune system.

🔬 In tests on mice with colorectal tumors, this approach led to complete regression in 3 out of 7 tumors (43%), showing promise in targeting cancer cells while potentially reducing systemic side effects.

🔬 The engineered bacteria were programmed to deliver a triple-whammy: producing chemotherapy (5-FU) directly in the tumor, acting as an immune stimulant, and blocking a tumor's immune-suppressing mechanism.

🩸 First papers from the large-scale NHS cancer blood test trial, involving 142,000 volunteers aged 50–77, have been published in leading journals, assessing the Galleri® multi-cancer early detection (MCED) test.

📄 One paper in the New England Journal of Medicine shows fewer people diagnosed with stage 4 cancers in the test group, with more early-stage diagnoses and fewer emergency diagnoses, but no overall difference in late-stage cancers (stages 3 & 4 combined) compared to the control group.

🔬 The second paper in Nature Medicine reports the Galleri® test's accuracy: around one-third of cancer patients received a positive signal, while less than 0.5% of those without cancer had a false positive result.

MIT researchers have identified a cellular pathway controlled by the YAP1 protein that allows colorectal cancer to metastasize, discovering that obesity and high-fat diets can trigger this process through the production of fatty molecules called ceramides.…
🔬 MIT biologists have identified a cellular pathway (controlled by YAP1) crucial for colorectal cancer spreading to other organs, particularly the liver.

🍎 This pathway, normally used for tissue repair, can be activated by a high-fat diet through the production of fatty molecules called ceramides, enabling cancer cells to grow and migrate.

💊 Blocking ceramide production with drugs could be a new strategy to prevent metastasis in colon cancer patients, as blocking YAP1 or ceramide enzymes significantly reduced spread in mouse studies.

🦠 A major study suggests the bacterium H. pylori, known for causing stomach ulcers and gastric cancer, may be linked to approximately 22% of colorectal cancer cases globally.

📈 This research analyzed data from 43 international studies with nearly 48.7 million participants. It found a 1.59-fold increased risk of colorectal cancer in those exposed to H. pylori.

🌍 The Western Pacific region, including China, Mongolia, and Vietnam, showed the highest estimated proportion (around 25%) of colorectal cancer cases linked to H. pylori.

🏥 Existing H. pylori screening and eradication programs for gastric cancer could potentially offer a dual benefit by also reducing colorectal cancer risk, particularly in regions with high infection rates.
