Study finds most researchers witness problematic authorship practices Read Full Article #AcademicIntegrity #AuthorshipEthics #PublishOrPerish
💡 Research authorship is crucial for careers, influencing hiring and funding, yet the process is often unclear.
🤔 My research, surveying over 3,500 scientists globally, found questionable authorship practices are common: 68% observed gift authorship (undeserved credit) and 55% observed ghost authorship (uncredited contributions).
👩🔬 Women researchers reported more negative experiences with authorship disagreements and felt less comfortable raising concerns, potentially exacerbating the "leaky pipeline" in academia.
🏫 Fewer than 25% of US PhD-granting universities have publicly available authorship policies, and those that do often lack guidance on conflict resolution.
