Autistic language abilities are vastly more complex than “verbal” or “nonverbal”. Language profiles in autism are better described on two separate axes — receptive comprehension and expressive language — than by the usual three broad categories of verbal,…
* 🗣️ New research published in npj Science of Learning suggests a more detailed, two-dimensional approach to understanding language in autistic individuals. This method separates language comprehension and expressive language, moving beyond traditional broad categories.

* 🧠 The study analyzed data from 62,414 autistic individuals (ages 4-22) and identified three comprehension profiles (command, modifier, syntactic) and four expressive language profiles (nonspeaking, single-word, single-sentence, multi-sentence).

* 📊 Combining these dimensions revealed four primary receptive-expressive profiles, offering a more precise picture of individual language abilities than previous classifications. The traditional three-part system may oversimplify communication patterns.

Study links grandfathers’ smoking and drinking to autism risk in grandchildren: Among 6,336 California grandparents, ≥5 servings of hard liquor/week was associated with nearly 3× the risk, while smoking ≥20 cigarettes/day was associated with roughly 2× the…
🔬 New study suggests grandfathers' smoking and drinking habits linked to autism risk in grandchildren. Analysis of over 6,300 grandparents from the Child Health and Development Studies (CHDS) cohort (1959-1967) found increased autism diagnoses in grandchildren whose grandfathers drank 5+ servings of hard liquor or smoked 20+ cigarettes daily during their wife's pregnancy.

👶 The study, published in Autism Research, highlights a potential intergenerational impact, with grandfathers' exposures showing a stronger association than grandmothers'. Researchers are exploring germline epigenome changes as a possible mechanism.

📊 While statistically significant, the findings do not prove causation and are based on a small number of diagnosed grandchildren (86 total). Milder autism cases may be undercounted, and grandfathers' habits were reported by their wives.

Screen time isn’t linked to language delays in autistic children, large U.S. study finds. Reading books together at home is associated with better language abilities in young autistic children, but screen time does not have a negative impact on these abilities.…
📚 Shared reading boosts language skills in young autistic children. A study published in Autism Research found that reading together at home is linked to better communication abilities in autistic children aged two to five.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Socioeconomic status plays a role. Children from higher-income families tend to have stronger language skills, and this is partly explained by more frequent shared reading sessions.

📺 Screen time shows no negative impact. The study found no significant association between screen time and language abilities in autistic children, a finding that contrasts with some research on neurotypical children.

💡 Environmental factors matter. Lead author Meredith Pecukonis emphasizes that home environment and socioeconomic factors significantly influence language development in autistic children, highlighting the need for support, especially for lower-income families.

A study found that children with congenital TORCH infections were three times more likely to be diagnosed with autism and seven times more likely to be diagnosed with an intellectual disability. It also showed an impact on academic performance, suggesting…
👶 Rare pregnancy infections (TORCH) linked to increased risk of autism and intellectual disability in children, according to a Karolinska Institute study published in JAMA Pediatrics.

📈 Children with congenital TORCH infections were about 3x more likely to be diagnosed with autism and over 7x more likely to have an intellectual disability. Severe to profound intellectual disability risk was up to 30x higher.

📊 The study followed 3.7 million individuals born in Sweden between 1987-2021. While relative risks are high, these infections account for a small percentage of overall autism and intellectual disability cases at the population level.

🧠 The findings suggest that preventing certain infections transmissible to the fetus during pregnancy is crucial for long-term brain development, highlighting the importance of vaccination programs and other preventive strategies.

Families raising autistic children show resilience alongside higher stress. Many parents describe personal growth through this process, such as becoming more patient, more grounded, more confident in advocating for their child or becoming more aware of what…
🌟 UK study from the University of Kentucky, published in the journal Autism, reveals families raising autistic children experience both greater stress and greater resilience.

📅 The research, led by Amanda Duncan, Ph.D., analyzed nationwide, post-COVID data from the National Survey of Children’s Health, representing over 100,000 U.S. families.

💡 Families raising autistic children develop resilience through everyday adaptation, problem-solving, and communication, not the absence of stress.

✅ Findings highlight the need for practical support, such as childcare and affordable services, and collaborative approaches from schools and providers, emphasizing that resilience alone is not enough.

A recent study suggests that people in the general population who possess higher levels of autistic-like traits tend to avoid positive, affectionate behaviors to maintain their romantic relationships. Read Full Article #AutismAwareness #RomanceRelationships…
* 📌 A study of 796 Polish adults found people with more autistic-like traits tend to avoid showing affection to keep romantic partners.

* 🔗 The research, published in Evolutionary Psychology and led by Andrzej Łukasik, suggests these traits affect relationships through attachment style, not broad evolutionary strategies.

* 💔 Higher autistic-like traits were linked to anxious and avoidant attachment, leading to less use of positive relationship behaviors like giving compliments or gifts.

Study of 2.5 million children finds no link between MMR vaccine and autism. Read Full Article #Vaccines #AutismMyth #MMRStudy
* 💉 A study of over 2.5 million children found no link between receiving the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine before age two and an increased risk of autism.

* ⚖️ The research, led by Todd L. Burstain of UW Medicine and published in The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal, used a precise "age-anchored landmark analysis" on electronic health records to compare vaccinated and unvaccinated children within defined age windows, adjusting for various factors.

* 🔬 The analysis of 2,560,035 children showed a hazard ratio of 0.97 for the MMR vaccine's first dose between 11.5 and 24 months, indicating no statistically significant increased risk of autism diagnosis.

The Intense World Theory of autism suggests autistic people feel too much rather than too little, and that social withdrawal may be protective response to overload rather than a lack of empathy Read Full Article #AutismResearch #OverloadTheory #IntenseWorld"}
🧠 Intense World Theory (IWT) suggests autism involves hypersensitivity to stimuli and emotions, making the world feel overwhelming. This is linked to hyperactive brain networks processing sensory input, emotions, and memories more intensely, leading to avoidance and social withdrawal.

🧠 Low-context thinking proposes that autism involves a reduced ability to integrate context, causing information to be processed literally and fragmentarily. This lack of contextual filtering leads to cognitive overload, where all details feel equally important.

🧠 The predictive brain and salience network offer further layers of explanation. The predictive brain tries to minimize the difference between expectation and perception; deviations here are seen in autism. The salience network acts as a switch for attention, determining signal relevance.

🧠 Recent research (2023) suggests that while heightened sensitivity isn't uniform, adaptations in sensitivity dependent on context are observed. The IWT is considered a useful tool, with the predictive brain offering a stronger mechanism and the salience network providing an anatomical basis for context blindness.

Study finds elevated levels of toxicants in teeth of children with autism. The research suggests that children are being “chronically and repeatedly exposed” to a wider range of developmental toxicants than previously identified in short-term exposure studies…
🦷 A pilot study by UT San Antonio found higher levels of toxicants in the primary teeth of children with autism compared to those without. These chemicals are found in common products like fragrance, food preservatives, and baby items.

📅 Published online in August 2026 in Neurotoxicology and Teratology, the study analyzed teeth from 22 children with autism and 16 typically developing children.

🔬 Scientists identified an average of 300 chemicals per participant. Of 60 compounds found in over half the samples, 39 are known developmental toxicants or endocrine disruptors, with 57% showing higher concentrations in the autism group.

👶 The study suggests children are exposed to a wider range of developmental toxicants than previously understood, highlighting the need for larger studies. While not proving causation, the findings point to significant differences in chemical exposures that warrant further investigation.

A new study reveals that autism in boys and girls is genetically highly similar, whereas early- and late-diagnosed autism show distinctly different genetic profiles and associations with other behavioral and cognitive traits. Read Full Article #AutismResearch…
🔵 Autism Diagnosis: Early vs. Late A new study in Behavior Genetics suggests the genetic factors behind early-diagnosed autism are linked to educational and cognitive traits, independent of biological sex. This means boys diagnosed early have distinct genetic markers not solely tied to being male.

🔵 Genetic Links Unclear for Late Diagnosis For autism diagnosed later in life (age 10+), the connection to conditions like depression is still being explored. Researchers couldn't determine if these links are due to the timing of the diagnosis or biological sex, as the genetic signal for late-diagnosed autism was highly similar to both male (0.99 correlation) and female (0.91 correlation) autism.

🔵 Distinct Genetic Pathways Emerge While male and female autism share high genetic similarity (0.81 correlation), early and late-diagnosed autism show less overlap (0.42 correlation). Early diagnosis is linked to educational attainment and cognitive tasks, while late diagnosis correlates with higher psychiatric burden, including depression and PTSD, and adverse social outcomes.

🔵 Sex Doesn't Fully Explain Early Diagnosis Adjusting for biological sex strengthened the unique genetic associations of early-diagnosed autism, indicating these are not simply a result of more boys being diagnosed early. However, the study also noted that a tendency towards speeding was negatively associated with female autism, and anorexia nervosa had a stronger genetic overlap with female autism.
