In a Death Valley Shrub, Scientists See a Blueprint for Heat-Proof Crops
In the searing heat of Death Valley, California, a small shrub known as the Arizona honeysweet is able to thrive in temperatures upwards of 120 degrees F (roughly 50 degrees C). A new study reveals how the plant, Tidestromia oblongifolia, can endure in such…

Urban parks were linked to 11% lower PM10 air pollution, temperatures several degrees cooler, noise levels 5.4 dB lower, and for every 100 metres travelled away from the park edge, temperatures warmed by more than half a degree, up to 300 metres Read Full…
🌳 Urban parks can significantly cool neighbourhoods and reduce air pollution up to 300 meters beyond their boundaries, according to new research from the University of Surrey's GCARE.
🌡️ In tests at Stoke Park, PM10 pollution was over 11% lower and temperatures were 6.5% cooler inside the park. Nearby streets warmed by over half a degree for every 100 meters away from the park edge.
🎧 Noise levels dropped by 5.41 decibels inside park areas, a noticeable difference for people. Tree cover and grassland areas improved thermal comfort, reducing how hot conditions feel by up to 8.5 °C.

More than four in five homes and workplaces across 25 European cities have less nearby tree canopy than what is needed for meaningful cooling. Neighborhoods with adequate tree cover and mature shade are significantly cooler—by 4 to 10° C—than surrounding paved or built-up areas.
