People with synesthesia experience distinct thematic patterns in their dreams. Findings provide evidence that our individual cognitive styles shape our imagination and mental life even while we are asleep. Read Full Article #SynesthesiaDreams #CognitiveStyles…
🧠 Study reveals people with synesthesia, a trait where senses are blended (e.g., seeing colors when hearing music), experience distinct dream themes compared to those without.

📝 Analysis of 2,337 Reddit dream reports by Emily Cook and Kyle Napierkowski found synesthetes more often dream about digital life, interpersonal regret, diverse worlds, and violent conflict.

💡 This suggests our waking cognitive styles and personality traits significantly influence our subconscious imagination, even during sleep.

Video gaming often sparks debate over harms and benefits. Cognitive difficulties are linked to problematic gaming habits rather than the act of gaming itself. While people at risk for gaming addiction show reduced working memory, those who play recreationally may actually exhibit enhanced attention.

Physical fitness is linked to brain health in young adults, but the effects differ by sex Read Full Article #BrainHealth #FitnessScience #SexDifferences
🧠 A Spanish study of 94 university students (ages 18-25) found better cardiorespiratory fitness linked to faster cognitive processing speed and a smaller cingulate cortex volume. Brain volume differences did not explain this fitness-cognition link.

💪 Sex differences emerged: in men, flexibility correlated with higher processing speed; in women, higher flexibility was linked to lower processing speed, potentially due to joint hypermobility.

🧠 For women specifically, better visual memory was tied to higher strength, and better verbal memory to higher cardiorespiratory fitness. Lower hippocampus volume in women was associated with higher flexibility but worse balance.

🔬 Published in Physiology & Behavior, the study's authors note that observed associations, particularly those involving flexibility and processing speed varying by sex, are tentative. The study authors carried out many statistical tests, with only a few yielding significant results, and did not apply corrections for multiple comparisons, meaning some findings may be due to chance.

Neuroscientists shed light on the illusion of learning from short videos. Watching rapid, fragmented clips captures sensory attention but impairs the deep cognitive processing required to pack away long-term memories compared to viewing a slightly longer, continuous video.

Exposure to digital media like social network, infinite scroll and immediate rewards may recalibrate how people value cognitive effort, making them less willing to persist with activities such as studying and sustained reading that are essential for durable…
🧠 New research co-authored by University of Tartu Associate Professor Jaan Aru suggests digital media may primarily alter how valuable we perceive cognitive effort, rather than directly harming cognitive abilities.

💡 The study proposes an "effort recalibration" framework, where constant low-effort rewards from digital platforms make cognitively demanding tasks feel less attractive over time.

📈 This recalibration might shift individuals towards immediate gratification, making sustained engagement for long-term learning and expertise more challenging.

Neuroscientists discover humans' response speed when exhaling is on average 41 milliseconds faster than when inhaling; study reveals link between breathing and cognition that could inform sleep disorder therapies and sports performance Read Full Article …
💨 Neuroscientists at Northwestern University found response speed is faster by an average of 41 milliseconds when exhaling versus inhaling. Pauses between breaths were also 21 milliseconds faster than inhalation.

🧠 This study, published today in iScience, is the first to measure response speed across all breathing phases.

💡 Researchers suggest this link between breathing and cognition could lead to new insights for improving sleep and next-day mental performance, with implications for sleep apnea research.
