A typical large tree can suck as much as 40 kilograms of CO2 out of the air over the course of a year. Now scientists at UC Berkeley say they can do the same job with less than half a pound of synthesized powder called COF-999. Tested for 100 cycles,It does not loose efficiency in removing all CO2.

Microplastics (MP) rising in Pennsylvania's freshwater are directly linked to plastic production. While MP accumulation increased every decade up to 2010, it decreased from 2010 to 2020. Researchers also noted no connection between population density or land use and high MP levels

Brake pad dust can be more toxic than exhaust emissions, study says - The researchers found that a higher concentration of copper in some commonly used brake pads was associated with increased harmful effects on sensitive cells from people’s lungs, as a result of particles being breathed in.

Seaweed washing onto sandy shores does more than rot. 🌊🪸 A new study found that it fuels oxygen-tolerant microorganisms that pump methane into the air. Methane was consistently found in shallow coastal waters at “supersaturation” concentrations, in some cases, nearly 1,900 times more. 🌱💨

Artificial turf “crumb” rubber decays into potentially dangerous chemical cocktail, new research finds ⚠️🧪🌱 Read Full Article #ArtificialTurf #CrumbRubber #ChemicalRisks #EnvironmentalSafety #Sustainability
🔬 New Northeastern University research reveals that crumb rubber from artificial turf decays into hundreds of previously untracked, potentially hazardous chemicals.

☀️ Researchers simulated sunlight conditions, finding crumb rubber (made from old tires) is highly reactive, generating dangerous transformation chemicals.

🐟 One identified chemical, 6PPD-quinone, is highly toxic to coho salmon, with less than one microgram per liter killing juveniles in under an hour.

🧪 The study identified at least 572 separate transformation products, including 4-HDPA (a suspected endocrine disruptor linked to breast cancer) and 1,3-DMBA (which mimics amphetamine).

Researchers 🔬 at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering 🏫 have observed that handwashing 🧼 synthetic fabrics 🧵 in water 💧 with higher total dissolved solids (TDS) 💧 leads to more microplastic fibres (MPF) ♻️ being released. Read…
💧 Handwashing Synthetic Fabrics Releases More Microplastics in Hard Water
New research from the University of Toronto reveals that washing synthetic clothes by hand in water with high levels of dissolved solids (TDS) leads to a greater release of microplastic fibres (MPF). This finding is critical for billions globally who handwash clothes due to lack of washing machines and soft water.

💧 Coating Effectiveness Varies Significantly with Water Type
A silicone-based coating, designed to reduce MPF release, showed reduced effectiveness when fabrics were washed in water from Lake Ontario (higher TDS) compared to de-ionized water (zero TDS). For green polyester, shedding was reduced by only 37% in lake water versus 92% in de-ionized water, highlighting the impact of water composition.

💧 Shorter Fibres from Hard Water Washing Pose Greater Environmental Risk
The study found that higher TDS levels in wash water resulted in shorter MPF lengths. These shorter fibres are more difficult to filter and are more easily ingested by aquatic life, posing a significant environmental concern.
