The timing of emissions cuts, not just their speed, will determine our planet’s fate 🌍 as a new Cornell study warns that delaying reductions beyond 2050 could push the probability of irreversible ice melt ❄️ and sea-level rise 🌊 above 50%, locking humanity into centuries of coastal transformation.

Greenland and Antarctica have lost 11.3 trillion metric tons of ice since the 1970s, raising global sea level by more than 3 centimeters (1.2 inches). For every third of an inch (or centimeter) of sea level rise, another 2 to 3 million people get flooded at…
🧊 Over 12.5 trillion tons of ice have melted from Greenland and Antarctica since 1979, enough to cover the continental U.S. in five feet of ice. This melt has raised global sea levels by about an inch (3.1 cm).

🌊 Warmer ocean waters, not just hotter air, are the primary cause of this accelerated melting, with glaciers flowing into the sea. This phenomenon is directly linked to climate change.

📉 Ice melt has significantly increased, particularly in the 2010s. This trend, which began accelerating in the 1990s, is expected to continue for decades, even if global warming stops.
