MIT engineers find a way to protect microbes from extreme conditions
MIT researchers have now developed a new way to make microbes hardy enough to withstand extreme conditions such as heat and the manufacturing processes used to formulate the microbes into powders or pills for long-term storage.
MIT scientists have discovered an intriguing new way to produce hydrogen fuel, using just soda cans, seawater and coffee grounds. The team says the chemical reaction could be put to work powering engines or fuel cells in marine vehicles like submarines that suck in seawater.

Famous double-slit experiment holds up when stripped to its quantum essentials
MIT physicists performed an idealized version of the double-slit experiment, stripping it to its quantum essentials. They confirmed that light exists as both a wave and a particle but cannot be observed in both forms at the same time.

A new study suggests aerobic respiration began hundreds of millions of years earlier than previously thought, some early life forms may have breathed oxygen well before it filled the atmosphere Read Full Article #earlyoxygen #aerobicrespiration #ancientlife…
🦠 New MIT research suggests some early life forms may have evolved to use oxygen hundreds of millions of years before the Great Oxidation Event (GOE) around 2.3 billion years ago.
🔬 The study traced the evolution of a key enzyme vital for oxygen-breathing life, finding it emerged during the Mesoarchean era, predating the GOE by hundreds of millions of years.
☁️ This finding may explain why oxygen took so long to build up in Earth's atmosphere, suggesting early organisms using oxygen near cyanobacteria (the first oxygen producers around 2.9 billion years ago) could have consumed it, delaying its atmospheric accumulation.

Implantable islet cells could control diabetes without insulin injections: « The cells can survive in the body for at least three months, producing enough insulin to control blood sugar levels, research shows. » Read Full Article #DiabetesResearch #IsletCells…
🔬 MIT researchers are developing an implantable device for diabetes patients that contains insulin-producing cells, aiming to replace daily injections.
🔬 The device protects cells from immune rejection and has an on-board oxygen generator to keep them healthy, showing promise for long-term type 1 diabetes control.
🔬 In a new study, these encapsulated cells survived in mice for at least 90 days, producing enough insulin to manage blood sugar levels.
🔬 The team is working to extend the device's lifespan to two years or longer, potentially offering a way to "make drugs in the body instead of outside."

MIT engineers’ virtual violin produces realistic sounds: « Based on the physics of how the instrument produces sound, the model could help violin makers in the design process. » Read Full Article #ViolinPhysics #SoundSynthesis #AIInstruments
🎻 MIT engineers have developed a "computational violin" that simulates violin sounds based on physics, not just sampled notes. This allows luthiers to test design changes virtually before building.
🔬 The simulation uses detailed 3D models and physics equations to predict how the instrument and surrounding air interact to produce sound when strings are plucked.
🎶 Researchers demonstrated the tool by simulating excerpts from "Bach's Fugue in G Minor" and "Daisy Bell" (the first computer-synthesized song).

Plants can sense the sound of rain. Research found that the sound of falling droplets effectively shook the seeds out of a dormant state, stimulating them to germinate at a faster rate compared with seeds that were not exposed to the same sound vibrations.…
💧 MIT engineers discovered that the sound of rain can stimulate rice seeds to germinate 30-40% faster.
🌊 The study, published in Scientific Reports, provides the first direct evidence that plant seeds can sense natural sounds. Researchers theorize that raindrop vibrations dislodge gravity-sensing organelles called "statoliths," signaling seeds to grow.
🎛️ Experiments involved submerging approximately 8,000 rice seeds in water and exposing them to recorded rain sounds, mimicking natural conditions.
