Strange, sinuous gullies etched into the dunes of Mars 🌌 are finally giving up their secrets. These gouges, new experiments reveal, are carved by the explosive sublimation of dry ice ❄️, burrowing down the slopes like a mole 🐾 and blasting away sand as it goes.

Ice moons in the outer solar system could have oceans that boil as water reaches the triple point where solid, liquid and gaseous water can coexist. The new models help us understand how surface features of moons like Mimas, Miranda or Titania are formed by internal processes. 🌌🌊❄️

🚀 New simulations by Carnegie’s Cong Liu and Ronald Cohen suggest a previously unknown state of matter may exist deep within ice giant planets like Uranus and Neptune.

🔬 Published in Nature Communications, their research predicts a quasi-one-dimensional superionic state of carbon hydride under extreme pressures (500-3,000 gigapascals) and temperatures (6,740-10,340°F) found in these planets' interiors.

✨ This state features a carbon framework with hydrogen atoms moving along spiral pathways, influencing heat/electricity transfer and potentially planet magnetic field generation.

Earth’s earliest continents may have set the chemical stage for life by regulating boron levels in ancient oceans Read Full Article #OriginOfLife #BoronInOcean #EarlyContinents
🌍 Earth's early continents might have been crucial for life's origin by controlling boron levels in ancient oceans.

⚛️ Boron is vital for life's building blocks, but its concentration needs to be just right – not too high to be toxic, and not too low to be ineffective.

⛰️ Scientists, including Dr. Brendan Dyck from UBC Okanagan, propose that the emergence of granite-rich continents over 3.7 billion years ago helped regulate boron.

💎 A mineral called tourmaline, found in continental rock, locks away boron, slowly releasing it into the water over time. This kept boron levels within a range suitable for early life.

In a new simulation, astrophysicists in the US pitted a 1-megaton nuclear warhead against a 160-meter (525-foot) city-killer asteroid. “We suggest that disruption is highly likely for two of the three scenarios”. Read Full Article #AsteroidDefense #Pla…
🚀 New research explores using a 1-megaton nuclear warhead to deflect a 160-meter (525-foot) asteroid. Simulations suggest the X-ray radiation, not a shockwave, would vaporize the asteroid's surface, propelling material and altering its course.

💥 This method could shatter the asteroid by vaporizing surface material and sending a shockwave through the rock, causing it to fracture internally. Simulations indicate this could be effective even if the warhead isn't directly on the asteroid's surface.

🔬 In one simulation with the bomb 10 meters away, 98.2% of the asteroid material was damaged and 97% moved faster than its escape velocity. At 25 meters, 92.6% of the asteroid was fully damaged, showing that closer isn't always better for disruption.

🤔 The long-term fate of the disrupted asteroid remains unknown due to computational limitations, meaning fragments could still pose a threat or the asteroid might reassemble.

Mercury may have contracted up to 30% more over its history than previous estimates suggested Read Full Article #Mercury #PlanetaryFormation #SpaceScience
🪐 A new study suggests Mercury has shrunk 10% to 30% more than previously estimated, potentially losing up to 14.5 miles (23 km) in diameter. This is because impact crater debris obscures the planet's shrinking signs.

💧 Scientists used maps of geologic evidence and surface roughness to show that rougher areas on Mercury have fewer visible "wrinkles," indicating hidden contraction.

🚀 This updated estimate could bring our understanding of Mercury's cooling and shrinkage in line with physical predictions. Future data from the BepiColombo mission, starting November 2026, may reveal even more detailed surface features.
