Your Body Keeps Producing Cannabis-Like Chemicals Throughout a Marathon
Wait, your body can do that?

Endocannabinoids produced by the body may contribute to the "runner's high": the happiness, calm, reduced anxiety, and dulled pain some people experience during long runs. This feeling was once credited to endorphins, but they do not readily cross the barrier…
🏃♂️ New research in BMC Medicine investigates how the body's natural "cannabis-like" chemicals, endocannabinoids, respond to prolonged exercise.
🩸 In a marathon study, levels of anandamide, linked to bliss, increased significantly from 8.7 miles onward, while 2-AG, associated with recovery, rose near the finish and post-race.
ultramarathon runners (100-230 km), endocannabinoid levels also increased, but surprisingly, not always higher than after a standard marathon. Exercise intensity may be more critical than duration for these chemical responses.
🤔 The "runner's high" remains elusive; elevated endocannabinoids alone don't guarantee it, and factors like extreme fatigue, pain, and individual experience play a complex role.
