Status fuels narcissism and narcissism fuels the chase for status. Research provides evidence of a two-way street between self-centered personality traits and the pursuit of social standing. Climbing the social ladder and possessing an inflated ego tend to…
⭐ A study in the Journal of Personality reveals a two-way relationship between narcissism and the pursuit of social status. High levels of grandiose narcissism (bold, arrogant self-promotion) correlate with a stronger desire for status and a perception of having achieved it, which in turn fuels more grandiose narcissism.
⭐ Conversely, vulnerable narcissism (insecurity, defensiveness) showed a different pattern. Higher levels of vulnerable narcissism were linked to a diminishing desire for status and a reduced belief in having achieved it over time.
⭐ The research, conducted with 528 Canadian university students over three two-week intervals, suggests that feeling accepted and liked by peers might actually reduce the need for self-aggrandizing behavior, potentially soothing an inflated ego.
