Good managers can be as important as the entire team. The study also shows that those who are most eager to become managers are not necessarily the best suited to the role. Read Full Article #Leadership #ManagementScience #TeamPerformance
📈 A new international study published in The Quarterly Journal of Economics reveals that a good manager's impact on team performance is as significant as the combined productive capacity of the employees.

💡 Researchers developed a new method to isolate a manager's contribution through a laboratory experiment at Essex University Economics Lab, where managers were randomly assigned to teams.

📊 In a related field study at a large retail chain, improving manager quality from average to good led to a 25% increase in annual sales.

🤔 The study also found that those most eager to become managers aren't always the best suited, and women expressed less interest in management roles despite performing equally well when assigned.

CEO narcissism is linked to value-destroying insider transactions, study finds Read Full Article #CEO #Narcissism #InsiderTrading
📈 A study in the Journal of Business Finance & Accounting reveals companies led by more narcissistic CEOs are more likely to engage in "related party transactions" (insider deals), and these deals tend to harm company performance.

💰 Narcissism in CEOs was measured indirectly through the size of their photos in annual reports and the pay gap between the CEO and the second-highest-paid executive. Researchers analyzed proxy statements from 824 unique firms between 2011 and 2022.

📉 Higher CEO narcissism correlated with a greater likelihood of engaging in "nonbusiness" related party transactions (loans, guarantees). For companies with highly narcissistic CEOs, these deals were linked to worse performance (approx. 5% drop in return on assets and 26% drop in Tobin's Q).

🛡️ Strong corporate board oversight was found to mitigate the negative impact of narcissism-driven deals. When boards were weak, the negative link between narcissistic CEOs and company performance was clear; when oversight was strong, this link faded significantly.

Workers who score high on so-called “dark” personality traits are often better equipped to handle a toxic supervisor, new research suggests Read Full Article #WorkplacePsychology #DarkTraits #ToxicLeadership
✨ A study published in Psychology of Leaders and Leadership found that employees scoring high on "dark" personality traits (Machiavellianism, Narcissism, Psychopathy) were better equipped to handle toxic supervisors, reporting higher mental well-being, more career advancement, and better relationships with their leaders.

✨ However, these "dark" traits offered no protection against negative outcomes. Employees high in these traits still reported strong intentions to quit and high psychological distress when dealing with a toxic boss.

✨ Notably, employees high in psychopathy showed even stronger intentions to quit under toxic supervision, possibly due to impulsiveness, despite potential career advancements.

✨ Researchers suggest practical takeaways for individuals include building self-confidence and maintaining a strategic focus, while organizations are advised to regularly survey workers about their managers to detect and address toxic supervision early.

Strict bosses can lead to employees doing less at work. In Chinese small and medium-sized firms, authoritarian leaders drive higher burnout and more quiet quitting. Forcing staff to show up sick or exhausted further boosts this burnout and deepens their disengagement.…
💼 **Authoritarian Leadership Fuels Quiet Quitting in Chinese SMEs**

A study of 363 employees in Chinese SMEs found that authoritarian leadership significantly contributes to job burnout, which in turn leads to quiet quitting. Involuntary presenteeism (feeling compelled to work when unwell) exacerbates this effect.

🔥 **Key Findings:**

* Authoritarian leadership increases job burnout.
* Job burnout leads to employees performing only minimum job requirements (quiet quitting).
* Involuntary presenteeism strengthens the link between burnout and quiet quitting.

📊 **Study Details:**

* Data collected from 363 employees in Chinese SMEs.
* The study aimed to understand how authoritarian leadership impacts quiet quitting through job burnout, moderated by involuntary presenteeism.
