Researchers have discovered faulty cell function in veterans suffering from Gulf War Illness (GWI), also known as Gulf War Syndrome (GWS), is likely caused by intense exposure to hazardous biological and chemical agents during war service.

Study in U.S. Veterans Identifies Agent Orange Exposure as a Risk Factor for Rare Skin Cancer Read Full Article #AgentOrangeExposure #RareSkinCancer #VeteranHealth #USStudy #CancerAwareness
🔍 Study by Mass General Brigham links U.S. veteran Agent Orange exposure to a rare melanoma subtype, acral melanoma, which appears on palms, soles, or under nails.

📈 Acral melanoma has a poorer prognosis, often diagnosed late. This finding suggests Agent Orange exposure may increase the odds of developing acral melanoma by approximately 30%.

📅 Research analyzed 2000–2024 data from the Veterans Health Administration, comparing veterans with and without acral melanoma.

🔬 The study, published in JAMA Dermatology, calls for further examination of Agent Orange as a risk factor and continued research into acral melanoma as a distinct skin cancer.

Agent Orange linked to aggressive bone marrow cancer in Vietnam veterans. American soldiers sprayed Agent Orange over the jungles of Vietnam and nearby countries from the air and from the ground, often mixing it with kerosene or fuel, another carcinogen, to…
🔬 New study in Blood Advances reveals genetic links between Agent Orange exposure and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), a bone marrow cancer. This research, led by Dr. Mikkael A. Sekeres, highlights how Agent Orange exposure can alter genetic processes, potentially leading to more aggressive forms of MDS and progressing to acute leukemia.

📊 The study analyzed data from 2,115 patients, finding that 130 (6.1%) reported Agent Orange exposure. Exposed patients were more likely to be diagnosed with MDS, experienced earlier disease progression, and showed significantly higher rates of high-risk chromosome abnormalities associated with aggressive disease.

🧬 Specific genetic mutations (TET2, SRSF2, U2AF1, ZRSR2, KRAS) were found more frequently in exposed patients, suggesting that Agent Orange may have introduced a critical mutation that initiates a cancer-forming process over decades.

👨🏾‍⚕️ The research also noted a disproportionate representation of Black men among those reporting Agent Orange exposure, highlighting a need for further investigation into exposure patterns and long-term risks within specific demographic groups.

Young military veterans in the U.S. have higher ‘forever chemical’ levels than non-veterans. Researchers don’t know for sure what caused the elevated levels, but they said PFAS sources could include past exposure to firefighting foams, munitions and groundwater contamination.

New research shows that irritability is strongly associated with post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms, chronic pain and difficulty understanding speech in noisy environments among military veterans with chronic mild traumatic brain injury, or concussion.…
🧠 New research from CU Anschutz shows irritability in veterans with chronic mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is strongly linked to PTSD symptoms and chronic pain.

👂 Difficulty understanding speech in noisy environments also independently contributes to irritability, suggesting sensory processing plays a role.

⚖️ A study of 124 military veterans found those with chronic mTBI reported higher irritability, PTSD symptoms, chronic pain, balance issues, and speech comprehension difficulties.

💡 Findings suggest a combination of brain function, emotional health, and sensory processing, not just psychological factors, contribute to post-concussion irritability.
