New research shows dopamine shapes both fast, effortful learning via working memory 🧠 and slower, habit-based trial-and-error learning. It not only reinforces rewards 🎉 but also modulates memory, motivation 💪, forgetting, and learning rates 📈—making it a key regulator of diverse learning systems.

Epigenetic switch to turn memories on and off created: 🧬 Researchers used CRISPR tools to control the Arc gene in memory-storing engram cells in the brain. 🧠 Turning Arc off weakened or erased memory in mice 🐭, while turning it on enhanced recall—and both effects could be undone. 🔄

💡 A new study in Applied Cognitive Psychology reveals that how believable an event is and how often it's suggested greatly influence the formation of false memories. Highly plausible events are more likely to create false beliefs, especially if suggested only once.

🤔 False beliefs occur when someone is sure an event happened, even without visualizing it. False memories go further, involving vivid sensory details of events that never took place.

🔬 Researchers found that when an event was presented as happening just once, a high-plausibility event led to a false belief in up to 52% of participants, compared to only 10% for low-plausibility events. However, this difference vanished when the event was suggested as happening repeatedly.

🧠 The findings highlight that memory is not perfect but malleable, and suggestive questioning, event plausibility, and frequency can distort recollections, with significant implications for legal settings.

It's possible to freeze the brain and restore its function. Scientists froze a section of a mouse brain, and after thawing, the neurons continued to function. This opens up new ways to treat diseases, research on memory, and potentially the future of "brain storage."

Memories of childhood trauma remain stable over time but change more often in children than adults. Research found there may be a window in childhood when traumatic memories are most open to change, and when therapeutic intervention could have the greatest long-term impact.

Relying on reminders could be weakening your memory skills Read Full Article #MemoryResearch #CognitiveScience #MemoryTips
🧠 New research suggests that relying on digital reminders might hinder our brain's ability to learn to remember tasks independently over time.

💡 Experiments showed that while reminders improve immediate task completion, individuals who used reminders previously performed worse on memory tasks when reminders were removed, compared to those who never used them.

📉 The study, "Offloading Reduces Prospective Memory Learning" by Craig Fellers and Benjamin C. Storm, indicates a potential trade-off between immediate convenience and long-term memory skill development.

Digital amnesia. Taking screenshots makes you more likely to forget information. Many of us take more photos and screenshots than we can use — around 20 photos a day, with around 2,000 photos stored on the average smartphone, according to estimates. Read…
📸 Taking screenshots may actually make you more likely to forget information, according to Binghamton University research published in the journal Memory & Cognition. The "photo-taking impairment effect" degrades memory unless the images are actively reviewed later.

🧠 The study, led by Sophia Fabrizio, suggests mechanisms like divided attention, cognitive offloading (relying on external storage instead of internal memory), and attentional disengagement (unconsciously distancing oneself from an experience) contribute to this digital amnesia.

📝 A better alternative for remembering information is writing it down by hand, a process known as "desirable difficulty," which forces more mental processing and organization of information.
