Dog 🐶 and cat 🐱 ownership was associated with slower cognitive decline; bird 🐦 and fish 🐟 ownership showed no such association. These findings suggest that dog 🐶 and cat 🐱 ownership might act as a protective factor aiding to slow down cognitive decline, thus contributing to healthy cognitive ageing.

Age-related hearing loss linked to brain function issues. Older adults with Presbycusis, which hinders speech recognition, were found to have reduced connections in areas of the brain involved in processing sound and speech, as well as memory and decision…
👂 New research links age-related hearing loss (presbycusis) to structural and functional brain changes in key areas like the putamen and fusiform gyrus.

🧠 A new measure, the Functional-Structural Ratio (FSR), shows reduced brain "coupling" correlates with both worsening hearing and cognitive decline.

💡 This FSR could be a novel biomarker for early screening and monitoring of cognitive issues related to hearing loss.

New-onset loneliness triggers an accelerated drop in cognitive health | Study shows how that memory and thinking skills deteriorate at similar rates until a person first feels lonely, at which point their cognitive downward trajectory speeds up. Read Full…
🧠 **Loneliness Accelerates Cognitive Decline in Older Adults**
A new analysis in the Journal of Affective Disorders reveals that loneliness speeds up memory and thinking skill deterioration.

📈 **Key Findings:**
* Cognitive decline accelerates only *after* an individual first reports feeling lonely.
* This acceleration was particularly prominent in women, older participants, and those with less formal education.
* Individuals who recovered from loneliness experienced a slowdown in cognitive decline.

🩺 **Implications for Health:**
* Loneliness should be treated as an actionable health metric in routine medical checkups for older adults.
* Catching new-onset loneliness offers a window for interventions and monitoring for early signs of cognitive trouble.

Higher vitamin C levels linked to greater gray matter volume and stronger default mode network connectivity (which is associated with attention and autobiographical memory) in a study of 2,044 adults over 64, suggesting a potential role in preserving cognitive…
🧠 Japanese study of over 2,000 adults aged 64+ linked lower vitamin C blood levels to reduced gray matter volume and weaker brain network connectivity.

🧠 Gray matter is crucial for processing information and memory, suggesting vitamin C may play a role in maintaining brain health and cognitive function in older age.

🧠 While findings show an association, they don't prove cause and effect, emphasizing the need for more research on vitamin C's direct impact on cognitive decline and dementia.

Heavy TV watching associated with smaller brain structures, study finds Read Full Article #BrainHealth #MediaConsumption #Neuroscience
🧠 A recent study published in Alzheimer's and Dementia: Journal of the Alzheimer's Association suggests that watching TV "very often" in midlife is associated with smaller brain volumes in areas linked to memory, reduced frontal and occipital lobes, and increased white matter damage.

💡 Researchers analyzed data from approximately 1,700 adults (average age 53) who participated in the ARIC Study between 1987-1989. Over two decades later, MRIs revealed structural brain differences in frequent TV watchers compared to those who watched "never" or "seldom."

⚖️ Notably, the study found that other sedentary activities, like sitting at work, did not show the same negative associations. In fact, high amounts of sitting at work were linked to larger frontal/occipital lobes and reduced white matter hyperintensity volumes, suggesting that the activity performed while sitting may be more impactful than sitting itself.
