The menopause 🌙 causes Alzheimer's-like changes to the brain 🧠, new research shows 🔬 - but experts say brain fog 💭 can often be improved with lifestyle changes 🧘‍♀️🏃‍♀️🥗 Read Full Article #menopause #brainfog #alzheimerslike #lifestylechanges #neuroscience
🧠 New research from the University of Cambridge suggests menopause may cause brain changes similar to those seen in Alzheimer's disease, potentially explaining why more women than men develop dementia. The study involved nearly 125,000 UK women and found reduced grey matter volume in post-menopausal women.

🧠 While symptoms like memory issues, word-finding difficulties, and "brain fog" can overlap with dementia, experts urge against panic. Dementia UK notes that while memory issues in menopause can improve with treatment or time, dementia involves progressive decline and increasing support needs.

🧠 Experts recommend women experiencing menopausal cognitive symptoms to research, consult with a GP or specialist, and consider lifestyle adjustments such as healthy eating, regular exercise (e.g., 30 mins walking 5 days/week), sufficient sleep, and social support to improve brain health and well-being.

Women with ADHD experience more perimenopausal symptoms, and earlier in life. This link may be due to consequences of ADHD such as anxiety and lower socio economic status. More intense symptoms also come from the relationship between estrogen and ADHD. Read…
• 🚺 Women with ADHD report nearly twice as many perimenopausal symptoms (54%) compared to those without ADHD (30%), often starting earlier in life (35-39 years old vs. 45 years old).

• 🧠 The increased perimenopausal symptoms in women with ADHD may be linked to higher rates of anxiety and lower socio-economic status, as well as a complex relationship between estrogen levels and ADHD symptom intensity.

• 💡 Interventions aimed at reducing chronic stress show promise in alleviating some of the challenges faced by women with ADHD during perimenopause.

Menopause isn't a slow fade, it's a sudden switch: a study of 300 million lab tests from over one million women found bones, liver, kidneys, and blood fats all change abruptly at the final period. Men of the same age show no such jump, and hormone shifts that predict it start up to 15 years earlier.

🚨 New study in Nature Medicine suggests menopause is an abrupt physiological transition, not a gradual aging process.

📊 Analysis of over 300 million lab tests from over 1 million women revealed sudden "jumps" in sex hormones, bone health, liver and kidney function, and blood chemistry at the onset of menopause.

🔬 Researchers used a computational framework to analyze large cohorts in the US and Israel, identifying a "step-like physiological cliff" across most body systems. 52 of 90 lab tests showed significant, sudden changes with menopause in the US dataset.

📈 Hormonal changes, particularly estrogen's role, are central. Declines in AMH and estradiol appear 12-15 years before the final menstrual period, while FSH increases around 14 years prior, suggesting predictability of systemic changes.

A 2026 study reveals that human ovaries remain biologically active after menopause, shifting their protein production with age to actively influence other organs and create an inflammatory environment linked to increased ovarian cancer risk. Read Full Article…
🔬 New research suggests ovaries undergo a "career change" after menopause, not complete retirement, showing significant protein shifts with age.

🥚 A study of 28 postmenopausal women's ovaries, aged 50-70+, revealed distinct protein profiles linked to age-related functions like RNA/DNA regulation in younger ovaries and lipid metabolism/inflammation in older ones.

🧠 These aging changes in ovarian tissue and immune cells may create an environment that increases ovarian cancer risk by promoting inflammation and collagen buildup.
