Why 🧬 the human penis is unusually large 🐒 compared to that of other primates is a long-standing evolutionary question 🤔. New findings suggest that female choice and male-male competition have jointly favored larger penis size, greater height, and more V-shaped…
* ⬆️ **Taller men, those with a more V-shaped body, and larger penises are consistently perceived as more attractive and having greater fighting ability.** This was found across studies where participants viewed computer-generated male figures, regardless of whether they were life-sized or viewed online.

* 💪 **Males also assess rivals based on penis size, viewing larger penises as indicative of greater sexual competitiveness and physical threat.** This suggests penis size may serve as a signal in male-male competition.

* 👩‍🔬 **Female mate choice and male-male competition appear to have jointly favored larger penis size, greater height, and more V-shaped bodies in men.** This research offers experimental evidence supporting these evolutionary drivers.

In cultures where men are active parents or where the gap between the rich and poor is wide, women are more likely to invest in their appearance to compete for partners, suggests study of 55 countries. Women may invest more in their appearance to attract partners…
💄 Cosmetics Spending Linked to Father's Role & Economic Gaps
New research published in Evolution and Human Behavior suggests a country's cosmetics industry size is tied to how much fathers are involved in childcare and the level of economic inequality. When men are active parents or the wealth gap is wide, women may enhance their appearance to compete for partners.

💰 Revised Sexual Selection Theory Explains Female Ornamentation
A study by Jun-Hong Kim of Pohang University of Science and Technology tested a revised sexual selection theory. This theory posits that when men contribute significantly to child-rearing, they become valuable resources, leading women to invest more in their appearance to attract these "high-investment males."

📈 Cross-Cultural Data Reveals Key Drivers
Kim analyzed data from up to 55 countries. Increased paternal investment (measured by fathers' share of unpaid domestic and childcare hours) correlated with higher per capita cosmetics spending. For every hour increase in relative paternal investment, spending rose by approximately $2.17.

📊 Economic Inequality Also Fuels Beauty Market
High income inequality and low social mobility scores were also strong predictors of larger cosmetics industries. This indicates that in stratified societies, women may use appearance to secure partners offering financial stability.

Male octopuses use a specialised arm to place a package of sperm inside the female. Scientists have found the arm is a sensory organ, similar to a tongue, that can detect the female hormone progesterone. This allows it to seek out and fertilise a mate, even if the male cannot see its sexual partner.
