🎼 Delta Blues

Probably the first blues music to appear in the USA, spanning from 1910s to 1940s, surely the first to be recorded starting from the late 1920s.

#DeltaBlues originated within the Afro-American community in the Mississippi Delta area and was characterized by the use of harmonicas and acoustic guitars played in bottleneck or slide guitar style.
Sung both by men and women in gospel, spirituals style, Delta Blues was both introspective and passionate.
Until the birth of Rock'n'Roll in early 1950s, Blues remained confined and addressed only to the Afro-American community and market.

The first known recording of a Blues song is "Milk Cow Blues" by Freddie Spruell in 1926.
After that, legendary musicologist John Lomax started to organize recording expeditions in the Delta region in search of singers and songs: thanks to him 🙏 and his phonograph (first record player, an interesting related story 👉 here), some of the songs he caught became worldwide known blues standards!

🎼 Me and The Devil

Since they appeared on Earth, all forms of Music have always been associated with all forms of Evil... mainly with the Devil (an interesting story from past centuries 👉 here).

#DeltaBlues is no exception, in particular in one of its leading artists Robert Leroy Johnson (May 8, 1911 – August 16, 1938), whose life (and death) is surrounded by mistery and legend.
Like many bluesmen of the time, #RobertJohnson was itinerant and played mainly in street corners or small clubs: most of his music has been recorded at low fidelity in improvised studios as 10-inch 78 rpm singles, in 1937–1938, just before his death.

Legend tells he sold his soul to the devil at a local crossroads to achieve musical success: his songs "Crossroads" and "Me and The Devil" seem to refer to that!
He died at 27 (first popular musician to be included in the infamous 27 Club) in unknown circumstances.

#EricClapton (like many others) consider RJ "the most important blues singer that ever lived."
