π³ 8 March 2020. Italy goes in total lockdown for the first time in its history! I remember my last guest who left just the day before and was able to catch the last flight back home before all airports shut down ππ»πβοΈ π
The world soon changed for everyone of us and we all got used to words like virus, pandemic, social distancing, #quarantine... Yes, Quarantine: do you know that this word is Venetian? Venice was the first city in the world to invent and implement "Quarantena" (which stands for "40 days"). This dates back in Medieval times due to the frequent plagues that threatened the city. Venice was the biggest port of the world and every ship (with its crew) that came from abroad was forced to stay 40 days "parked" in one of the numerous islands of the #Lagoon, to prevent the spread of illnesses unknown to the city. This of course didn't work all the time, because the hygiene standards were rather poor and plagues spread frequently, but the Quarantena practice saved many lives for sure and was adopted by all countries in the world as a standard of health control.
I post a video of my Venice Quarantine Tour across the Lagoon, anyone can enjoy with me when here ππ
