I just returned from Zaporizhzhia 🇺🇦, close to the southern front

I couldn't take the train because Russia hit multiple civilian trains coming from Dnipro recently. I was surprised by the number of civilians in the city, as if the war was not 30 km away, estimation, at least 500k civilians.

I saw Shahed interceptions and KAB strikes in the city center, the only "safe" place right now. Everyday, 3 to 5 civilians are killed, mainly in the southern part of the city, which is very dangerous now. I saw many appartement buildings destroyed by Shahed/airstrikes in the center.

People told us that the situation for civilians in the south is deteriorating because of glide bombs and fiber-optic drones, but most of the important areas and objects are getting covered by anti-drone nets. The city remains a crucial logistics hub, but I didn't see any armoured vehicle at all !

On the Zaporizhzhia-Dnipro road, only a minority of the gas station had been hit, as Russian mid-range strikes struggle to be similar to Ukrainian ones. The roads will eventually need to be covered to protect the numerous trucks and vehicles there.

Again, a video of a lone Russian soldier with a flag, more than 15 km from the front.

This happens regularly, especially on some directions. Sometimes, lost russian soldiers are found 20, 50 or even 80 km from the front, after they lost themselves during an infiltration attempt.

Their value is very small (mainly propaganda and sometimes tracking down drone operators' positions), and there is a big information asymmetry between what Russia shows and what is the reality. There are often cases of lost Russians asking Ukrainian positions (they think the position is Russian) for food or directions. Since they speak the same language at the front, Ukrainian often realise once the Russian soldier left that he was not one of theirs.

Everyday, Russian infiltrators are being killed or captured in different directions. 64 of those have recently been caught on Huliailpole front by Skala (this is not just a show off).

This strategy is much more efficient in cities than in the countryside, and we should remember we see less than 5% of what is happening on the front everyday. Any map showing this even as a grey zone shouldn't be taken seriously...

Last time I checked, fortifications covered less than 1% of Polish 🇵🇱 borders.

The way they are digging is in fact similar to how Ukraine dug in 2023-2024, which lead to difficult situations.

The direction is the good one, but there is a lot to learn from the Ukrainian example and errors and the pace is very very slow. The priority is to protect the borders as well as the depth, Suwalki corridor and, obviously, prioritise airdefense and anti-drone defense.

With the Ukrainian company @FirePointUA expecting to produce 100 000 FP-1/2 this year, this is twice as much as Russian Geran production.

And remember, Russia is producing Geran in only one factory and it has very few interceptors...

That's all for today's update. I will continue to follow closely this campaign, and as expected, will analyse what Russia is trying to replicate and how they defend themselves.
