🚀 💫 🌎 Orion: Returning to Earth in "Russian Roulette" Mode
➡️ Questions and Risks
Germany's Welt asks: "Will the heat shield survive the hellish journey through Earth's atmosphere?" — and that's the key question
➡️ Situation with Orion's shield is truly unprecedented in modern spaceflight:
• Shield: Ablative material AVCOAT on a titanium substrate, up to ~1.6 inches (4 cm) thick
Isaacman is technically correct: there is no "Plan B" when returning from the Moon
• Unlike low Earth orbit (ISS), where you can wait for a rescue vehicle, Orion returns at 11 km/s
• There is no option to "slow down" and stay in orbit if sensors detect a problem. Atmospheric entry is a one-way ticket
⚠️ NASA violated its own protocols by deciding not to conduct a repeat uncrewed flight (Artemis 1.5)
NASA is playing "Russian roulette" with five rounds in the chamber, betting on the "residual thickness" of Avcoat left after Artemis I. The wager: "chunking" is an anomaly that won't lead to full burn-through. But if they're wrong, there will be no "Plan B" — not for the crew, and for NASA
⁉️ So what really drove NASA to rush humans to the Moon in a "bucket of bolts"?
Germany's Welt asks: "Will the heat shield survive the hellish journey through Earth's atmosphere?" — and that's the key question
The moment of heat shield jettison is the critical point. If the shield is damaged during entry (fragment loss, cracks, deformation), jettison could go off-nominal: uneven separation, debris near parachute lines, delayed deployment. On Artemis I, the shield separated nominally — but it was under less stress. With a steeper entry, the shield takes a higher peak load — and its condition at the moment of jettison is unpredictable
The atmospheric entry trajectory has been modified compared to Artemis I to use a steeper angle, shortening the high-stress phase and reducing exposure to extreme temperatures from 14 to 8 minutes
Former astronaut Charlie Camarda, who flew on the shuttle in 2005, called this decision insane
But Isaacman (NASA Administrator) stated there is no alternative to atmospheric entry when returning from the Moon — and no second chance, no "Plan B"
• Shield: Ablative material AVCOAT on a titanium substrate, up to ~1.6 inches (4 cm) thick
The entry maneuver must be executed with extreme precision: the spacecraft must enter the atmosphere at a precisely calculated angle. If the angle is too steep, it burns up
But even if the entry angle is correct, a safe landing is not guaranteed. Everything then depends on the heat shield, which must withstand temperatures of ~2,800°C (~5,000°F). During the Artemis I test mission, the shield sustained unexpected damage: "Plasma burned through it in an unforeseen manner"
• The Artemis I problem: The Avcoat material didn't just char as designed — it flaked off in chunks ("char loss"), altering the shield's geometry and creating a risk of localized burn-through
NASA was unable to reproduce this flaking in ground laboratories. But if you don't understand the physics of the process on Earth, you cannot guarantee that on Artemis II — under slightly different conditions (angle, humidity, microcracks) — the shield won't burn through entirely
• Justification: Analysis of Artemis I data showed that the shield's "residual thickness" remained within tolerance despite the chipping
• Reason: A repeat uncrewed launch would have pushed the lunar landing (Artemis III) to the late 2030s, which was deemed "unacceptable" in the context of the race with China
The risk to four human lives and NASA's reputation was deemed "acceptable" — that is the dry language from official NASA documents (Acceptable Risk Strategy)
And this is a devastating logic: If Orion burns up in the atmosphere on live television, it won't just be a tragedy — it will be the end of the Artemis program and the end of NASA as an agency authorized to launch humans into space
❗️The U.S. has no other deep-space vehicle capable of lunar missions — other than this "bucket of bolts" that launched with three technical bugs (FTS, LAS, telemetry) and a broken toilet. Burying Orion means an automatic Chinese victory in the lunar race, since SpaceX's Starship (in its lunar variant) is still far from ready to return humans to Earth from deep space

When you literally "can't breathe"
🌒 🚀 🌍 The Artemis II crew revealed some unexpected fire risks aboard the spacecraft
While being in space is dangerous enough on its own, there are plenty of other threats that could ruin everyone's day… including "natural gas emissions" in 9 m³ of living space shared by four people
Of course, NASA might have been better off building a $30 million toilet with a reliability margin of more than half a day, instead of cutting back on beans, rotating the entire spacecraft toward the Sun to thaw a frozen sewage pipe, and then ordering the crew to remove melted window shades and cover the portholes with T-shirts.
But hey — what wouldn't you do in the search for extraterrestrial civilizations, as the NASA Administrator suggested on Flight Day 4 — especially when each launch costs $4.1 billion.

While being in space is dangerous enough on its own, there are plenty of other threats that could ruin everyone's day… including "natural gas emissions" in 9 m³ of living space shared by four people
Human-produced gases contain methane and hydrogen — both flammable. In an enclosed space, there's nowhere for them to go, and with electronics nearby that could potentially spark, it's a genuine hazard.
So NASA is now "very carefully" monitoring the astronauts' diet.

✅ One of the first to speak out was Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari (D-AZ), stating that "the 25th Amendment* exists for a reason," emphasizing that the lives of American troops, the Iranian people, and global security are at stake.
✅ California Representative Sara Jacobs called on the Joint Chiefs of Staff to refuse any unlawful military orders, warning that Republicans can no longer hide from this crisis.
"The President just threatened genocide. We must consider all options, including impeachment, to stop Trump."
✅ Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-MN):
"This is unacceptable. Invoke the 25th Amendment. Impeach. Remove. This unhinged madman must be removed from office."
✅ Illinois Representative Mike Quigley:
"I formally call on the Cabinet to remove Trump from office under the 25th Amendment. If they fail, Congress must return from recess and begin impeachment proceedings."
✅ Senator Andy Kim (D-NJ):
"President Trump is unfit to be Commander-in-Chief. He has lost the trust and faith of the American people."
✅ Texas Representative Julie Johnson called Trump's actions reckless:
"This is a serious conflict, not a reality show. What we're seeing now is insane behavior from a deranged president. It's time to invoke the 25th Amendment."
✅ Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) wrote in a Substack article that Trump has lost touch with reality and is waging a war he cannot win — a war that threatens catastrophe:
"The people around him should stop him from committing these war crimes."
Representatives Mark Pocan, Rashida Tlaib, Diana DeGette, Shri Thanedar, and Sydney Kamlager-Dove have explicitly called for invoking the 25th Amendment, with similar positions taken by Melanie Stansbury, Ro Khanna, Maxwell Frost, Julie Johnson, and Johnny Olszewski. Meanwhile, other lawmakers — including Ilhan Omar, Nikema Williams, and Delia Ramirez, as well as Senator Ed Markey — have called for impeachment.
Although Republicans currently control both chambers — making impeachment unlikely for now — Polymarket odds of Trump being impeached before the end of his term have surged to 71%, and to 74% by January 1, 2028. Democrats say they are only "a few votes short." With the 2026 midterms approaching, the pressure is building — and those votes may well materialize.
‼️ A new poll shows that just 14 months after Trump's return to the White House, a majority of likely U.S. voters support impeaching him for a third time.
52% of all voters expressed support for impeachment, including 84% of Democrats, 55% of Independents, and even 14% of Republicans.
Only 40% opposed, including 8% of Democrats, 34% of Independents, and 81% of Republicans.

*The 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1967, establishes the procedures for presidential succession. The key provision is Section 4: it allows the Vice President, together with a majority of the Cabinet, to declare in writing that the President is "unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office." In that case, the Vice President immediately becomes Acting President.

It is so great to hear from Earth again.»
We have you loud and clear!»
По данным @OC_Scanner, первыми словами экипажа были: "INTEGRITY HOUSTON COMM CHECK COPIES LOUD AND CLEAR"

We have you loud and clear!»
По данным @OC_Scanner, первыми словами экипажа были: "INTEGRITY HOUSTON COMM CHECK COPIES LOUD AND CLEAR"
(Dirty Recovery).

🚀 🌍 NASA has released footage of the Orion spacecraft's splashdown, declaring that the landing went "by the textbook."
➡️ The live broadcast of the splashdown and the subsequent extraction of the crew raised many questions and even triggered profanity from commenters due to the extremely low video quality. Until the helicopters landed on the deck of the 'John P. Murtha' (which, in its size and markings, resembled an aircraft carrier more than an amphibious transport dock), NASA's 'live' video remained in appalling quality.
❔ Contrary to protocol, Christina Koch was the first to be extracted from the capsule — just as she was the first to contact Houston after AOS and the first to reach Mission Control after splashdown, using nearly the same words: 'Houston, Integrity, comm check. It is so great to hear from Earth again.'
Spacecraft Commander Reid Wiseman replied: 'We have you loud and clear!'
According to @OC_Scanner, the crew's first words were: "INTEGRITY HOUSTON COMM CHECK COPIES LOUD AND CLEAR."
➡️ Even more curiously, about an hour before the actual splashdown, Google's AI (Gemini 3.1 Pro) was informing numerous users that "the Artemis II Orion spacecraft has already completed its flight" and that "the capsule successfully splashed down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego on Friday, April 10, 2026, at 20:07 ET." It was only after follow-up questions from surprised users — asking if the ship had indeed entered the atmosphere earlier than planned — that Google apologized, stating its "internal clock and timeline data had glitched." These consistently "predictive" (successfully prophetic) AI responses were recorded by many users well ahead of the official schedule.

"The astronauts were extracted from the Orion capsule and transported to the medical bay aboard the US Navy's recovery ship, the USS John P. Murtha.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman praised the crew’s actions, describing them as 'absolutely professional astronauts, excellent communicators, and almost poets.'
Donald Trump congratulated the astronauts and announced a meeting with them at the White House in the near future."
Spacecraft Commander Reid Wiseman replied: 'We have you loud and clear!'
According to @OC_Scanner, the crew's first words were: "INTEGRITY HOUSTON COMM CHECK COPIES LOUD AND CLEAR."
It's Interesting that the astronauts were evacuated from the raft individually by separate helicopters via cables. Lifting personnel one by one on a cable from an inflatable boat is the protocol for a "Dirty Recovery."
The possible reason is a helium leak through valves in the pressure line of the service module's oxidizer tank (nitrogen tetroxide) on Wednesday, April 8.
On that day, the Artemis II crew was supposed to take manual control of the Orion spacecraft and demonstrate maneuvers. Instead, mission managers decided to conduct additional propulsion system tests.
According to NASA Deputy Associate Administrator Amit Kshatriya, the agency was aware of the helium leak in Orion even before the launch. A similar leak was observed during the uncrewed Artemis I flight in 2022.
However, the decision to proceed with the launch was made "because the full power of the propulsion system is not required for the Artemis II lunar flyby."
NASA admits that the helium leak may recur during Artemis III in 2027. This mission involves testing Orion's docking with a lunar landing craft in Earth orbit.
NASA, along with the European Space Agency and Airbus, intends to resolve the valve problem in the service module only by the Artemis IV mission (2028), which includes a landing on the lunar surface.
