Madhu Gottumukkala, the acting director of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), uploaded at least four internal documents to the public version of ChatGPT last summer. This was detected by the agency's own automatic security sensors — the very ones designed to prevent leaks of government data. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has launched a damage assessment.

The situation is particularly ironic given that Gottumukkala himself requested special permission to use ChatGPT shortly after joining the agency in May 2025. For other DHS employees, access to the OpenAI chatbot was blocked on government devices and departmental networks.

The uploaded files were marked "For Official Use Only" (FOUO). According to sources from Politico, the documents involved the agency's contract documentation. The incident occurred in August and triggered several automatic security warnings.

This is not the first issue Gottumukkala has faced during his tenure. Media previously reported that he failed a polygraph test required for access to a secret cyber program and attempted to fire the agency's Chief Information Officer (CIO). CISA has lost a significant portion of its staff amid the Trump administration's budget cuts, and the Senate has yet to confirm a permanent leader.
