This poem captures the essence of Kenwa Mabuni’s discipline and the joy of dedicated training in martial arts. It speaks of letting go of everyday distractions, focusing entirely on the practice, and embracing the journey of self-improvement. The imagery of paddling through an endless sea symbolizes the continuous effort required in martial training—not just to fight, but to refine the body, mind, and spirit. True fulfillment lies not in reaching a destination, but in the very act of moving forward. Discipline, persistence, and the joy of progress—this is the heart of the martial path.

Seigan (正眼) Seigan means you keep your eyes fixed not on one detail but on the opponent as a whole. Seigan means your gaze should match your techniques. When you strike, block, or turn, your eyes move correctly, not wandering or late. The "eye" is part of posture. Without correct gaze, your technique loses spirit and timing.

Matsumura Rohai (松村鷺牌) is a classical kata created by Matsumura Sokon. It shows Tomari-te influence within Shuri-te tradition. Its name means “vision of a heron,” shown in the one-leg stances and upright posture that demand balance, precision, and timing, with a steady rhythm and sharp defensive counters.

Keitai no Hoji (形態の保持) means preserving the proper form in kata. It emphasizes correct shape of techniques, accuracy of stances, and upright posture. It is not just keeping the sequence but maintaining the exact form that defines the kata.

Ko-uke (Uchi)
This technique uses the back of the bent wrist for both blocking and striking. The hand bends inward, with the pinky and ring fingers folded tightly and the thumb pressing against the middle and ring fingers, forming a strong arch in the wrist. The shape resembles holding chopsticks (Hashi). The key is to keep the hand tight and the wrist firm.

In karate, acceleration must be immediate. Do not start slowing and then build up speed. From the moment you move from point A, you must drive straight to point B as fast as possible. The technique should not be a gradual acceleration, but an explosive burst, moving from point A to point B all at once. This direct acceleration gives your technique sharpness, power, and real effectiveness.

Kakete receives with softness and controls with firmness.

Seipai (十八) was a kata that Ryuso Kenwa Mabuni used as a teaching tool to explain deeper ideas in Karate.
He chose Seipai because it is compact yet holds the core methods of Naha-te. It shows a well-structured set of hand-to-hand techniques and serves as a model for understanding kata principles, Bubishi teachings, and practical applications (bunkai).
