🔋 Fusion Power Plant for Generation of Net Electricity

The scientists from DIII-D have designed a full “compact nuclear fusion plant” concept and detailed the plans in a new paper in Nuclear Fusion.

In simulations, their 8-meter-wide pressurized plasma fusion concept is powerful enough to generate 200 megawatts (MW) of net electricity after the energy cost of the fusion itself.

This would be the very first fusion power plant to generate net electricity. The current best ratio is an output of 67 percent of the total energy required to power the reactor.

The researchers are careful to emphasize their paper is still very abstract. They want it to serve as a guide for the near future of pressurized plasma research, a sort of road map to whatever the next steps are. And while a traditional tokamak reactor that produces net power is still at least 9 to 14 years away, a pressurized tokamak is almost definitely even further out.

🔌 The Dawn of Wireless Electricity

Wireless electricity sounds like science fiction, but the technology is already realized and primed for a utility-scale case study. And in this first-of-its-kind pilot program, Powerco—New Zealand’s second-largest electricity distributor—will test Emrod technology in 2021.

The companies plan to deploy the prototype wireless energy infrastructure across a 130-foot expanse. To make it possible, Emrod uses rectifying antennas, (“rectennas”), that pass microwaves of electricity from one waypoint to the next: a solution well-suited to New Zealand’s mountainous terrain.

Specialized square elements are mounted on intervening poles to act as pass-through points that keep the electricity humming along, and a broader surface area “catches” the entire wave.

By eliminating the need for long stretches of traditional copper wiring, it can bring power to these regions, which can’t afford the kind of infrastructure that supports the power grid.

📃 Vertical turbines far more efficient in large-scale wind farms

A study from Oxford Brookes University researchers has found that vertical wind turbine design is considerably more efficient than the traditional form factor in large-scale wind farms, and in a certain arrangement can increase performance by up to 15 per cent.

The research suggests that the now-familiar sight of traditional propeller wind turbines may be eventually replaced by the sight of wind farms containing more compact and efficient vertical turbines.

🔌 Shine Turbine: Foldable Turbine Puts Wind Power in Your Backpack

It can harvest three phones worth of power in as little as an hour

Shine Turbine, a 3-pound, 40-watt wind turbine that can charge handheld electronics, is the first of a series of renewable power devices designed by the startup to provide freedom from the electrical grid.

The team had to overcome several engineering challenges to get its design right since there were many variables contradicting each other. It had to be durable enough to use as an outdoor product but also lightweight and compact to be easily carried around, and also efficient enough to generate lots of power. This all meant it had to be highly engineered.

When wind speeds double, power output increases eightfold, and when you combine this with Shine's patent-pending technology (high-efficiency blades and lightweight design), you get yourself a wind charger that can provide the most energy for the least amount of weight.

🔌 Building the Solar Farm installation

A very interesting series of articles with lots of photos about building a modern private Solar Farm and connecting it to the local grid.

Russell Graves, electronics enthusiast from Idaho, describes the whole process of building Solar Farm including wiring, controlling plant, etc.

How well does his solar farm work out? Sometimes the panels produce a lot of power, sometimes nearly nothing, but it has been up and running for all of winter and into spring.

Over the winter, Russel pulled a total of 3.1 MWh from the grid, mainly because his home is heated with electric power. But once spring hit, he started pushing considerably more into the grid than he was pulling; on some days his setup produces around 95 kWh, of which about 70 kWh gets exported.

📰 Taiwan's New Solar Panel 'Sun Rock' Will Deliver 1 Million kWh Per Year

A high-profile Dutch firm has launched an urban sustainability project of epic proportions.

Called the Sun Rock project, MVRDV has announced plans to build a building almost totally smothered in solar panels, capable of generating roughly 1 million kWh of green energy, every year, according to a new page on the company's official website.

Crucially, if it works, it could even pump excess energy back into the city grid, raising the question of whether entire neighborhoods of functional and residential buildings could also serve as power sources in the world of tomorrow. It's slated to be up and running by 2024.

📰 Nuclear fusion power research passes milestone with ‘fusion ignition’

Scientists have been trying to achieve a net energy gain from nuclear fusion for decades, but there are still kinks to work out

For the first time, researchers have created a fusion reaction that resulted in a net energy gain. The results, from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, mark a significant step on the very long road toward generating clean energy from nuclear fusion.

Nuclear fusion happens when atoms crash into each other, “fusing” to create a heavier atom and releasing energy in the process. In the sun and other stars, hydrogen nuclei fuse together, creating helium and generating enormous amounts of energy. To achieve nuclear fusion on Earth, humans have to heat atoms to tremendous temperatures — millions of degrees Celsius, which is why it’s been so daunting to reach a net energy gain.

📰 Scientists beam solar power to Earth from space for 1st time ever

The Space Solar Power Demonstrator's MAPLE experiment was able to wirelessly transfer collected solar power to receivers in space and direct energy to Earth

A space solar power prototype has demonstrated its ability to wirelessly beam power through space and direct a detectable amount of energy toward Earth for the first time. The experiment proves the viability of tapping into a near-limitless supply of power in the form of energy from the sun from space.

Because solar energy in space isn’t subject to factors like day and night, obscuration by clouds, or weather on Earth, it is always available. In fact, it is estimated that space-based harvesters could potentially yield eight times more power than solar panels at any location on the surface of the globe.

🔋 Nuclear battery produces power for 50 years without needing to charge

Betavolt, a Chinese startup, has developed an innovative nuclear battery named Betavolt BV100, which is capable of delivering a constant power output of 3V/100 microwatts for over 50 years without needing a recharge. Measuring just 15x15x5 mm, this battery represents a significant advancement in the miniaturization of atomic energy. While 100 microwatts may not seem substantial, Betavolt has plans to scale up the technology to produce a 1-watt nuclear battery by 2025, potentially revolutionizing power supply in devices like smartphones and drones.

The BV100 utilizes radioactive nickel-63, with a half-life of about 100 years, which decays into non-radioactive copper, generating electricity. This process involves a unique structure comprising a nickel-63 sheet placed between diamond semiconductor converters. Despite the use of radioactive material, safety is a key feature of the BV100. Nickel-63 poses minimal external hazard due to its limited range in air and water, and the battery's design ensures the radioactive material is securely encased. This advancement in nuclear battery technology, echoing the early betavoltaic batteries used in space programs and demonstrates significant progress in power density and safety.
