🖐🏻 Finger Bend sensor made of piezoresistive fabric

Finger Bend is a sensor created to find a way of making finger bends inside of a glove, control light and sound.

The construction of the sensor is simple, using piezoresistive fabric which changes its resistance when deformed. By sewing this into a sheath that can be placed on the finger, and wiring it up with conductive threads, it can be used to detect the flexion of the wearer’s digits by sampling the resistance with an analog to digital converter on any garden variety microcontroller.

The idea behind this glove is to then connect it to a body suit with other eTextile sensors for Immersive Audiovisual Performances.

📟 Magnetic Field Visualizer

This project is about developing a simple magnetic field visualizer. Here, the XMC1100 is the system MCU with fetches magnetic field data of a nearby magnet from the TLV49 3D magnetic sensor.

The MCU communicates with the sensor over I2C protocol. For visualizing the data, an E-Ink display is added to the system. The display is 3.3 V like rest of the system and communicates with the host MCU over SPI.

This visualizer can be used for :
▫️ Identifying North/South poles of a magnet
▫️ Magnet's orientation/heading on XY plane
▫️ Visualize virtual Field lines
▫️ Detect effective field area of a magnet
▫️ Compare magnets strength qualitatively

🖐🏻 Tactile Sensing Gets a Boost for AI Systems Thanks to Open-source Research

The new announcement from Meta this week was ReSkin, a new open-source tactile sensing "skin" solution. ReSkin is a deformable elastomer designed with embedded magnetic particles.

According to the publication, when this material deforms, it causes a change in its magnetic field, which is perceptible by nearby magnetometers. The system then uses AI-based techniques to interpret this data into relevant information such as contact location and applied force.

All together, ReSkin comes out to be 2-3 mm thick, has a lifetime of over 50,000 interactions, has a temporal resolution of up to 400 Hz, and has a spatial resolution of 1 mm with 90% accuracy.

ReSkin offers several unique value propositions. First off, unlike other skin-based sensors, ReSkin is generalizable thanks to a novel self-supervised learning algorithm that allows the sensors to auto-calibrate without manual intervention.

📰 NOVELDA UWB X4 sensor can detect submillimeter movements

NOVELDA has just announced the UWB X4/X4F103 sensor and development kit that can detect submillimeter micro-movements such as breathing for human presence detection and does so at a really low power consumption of under 2mW.

NOVELDA UWB X4 (X4F103) highlights:
▫️ High-precision ranging for accurate distance measurement and absolute range bounding based on patented impulse radar technology.
▫️ Low power consumption below 2mW, and no co-existence issues with other sensors.
▫️ Wide detection zone for accurate detection with up to 180-degree field of view.
▫️ Up to 5m range.
▫️ Works through plastic and glass or layers of clothing.

The UWB X4 sensor will mostly be used in smart home and building automation notably for touchless-screen displays, lighting and HVAC control, and wireless health monitors.

📟 Labfab's Open-Source CO2 Sensor

The sensor would help you to determine the periods of ventilation in closed spaces, in particular in the school context. Indeed, a high concentration of CO2 in a classroom has the possible consequence of a drop in concentration and even a state of drowsiness. The CO2 sensor is designed to interpret these different CO2 alert levels by simple color code.

📟 SeismoM5 - Open-Source Earthquake Sensor

SeismoM5 is an Earthquake Sensor Implementation on M5StickC, using its own MPU6886 accelerometer.

The properties of this project is:
▫️ Calibrate MPU6886 accelerometer and use calibration results as offsets.
▫️ Use DLPF - 5 Hz.
▫️ Use MQTT and send data, only when an earthquake happens.
▫️ Draw X,Y,Z accel results on M5stickC screen as graph, only when an earthquake happens.
▫️ Show PGA always.
▫️ Emergency alerts; Red Led and SPK HAT sound warning during an earthquake.

Usage: Seismologists mount accelerometer based seismic sensors to the lowest point of the structure, close to the ground as possible. However, since this is an amateur earthquake sensor, you could mount it as high as possible in the house, on a wall.

📟 Three-axis Accelerometer Data Logger

ChatGPT has gained immense popularity recently, and the system has even been down due to a significant surge in usage. To examine its compatibility with gestures, the author has designed this device.

The first step is to collect and store data for future model training on TinyML. It has an accelerometer+gyroscope module, which will gather and save the three-axis (x, y, and z) data of hand movements to a microSD card and display them on an OLED screen in real-time.

The recorded data then can be used for machine learning applications and training the neural networks.

📰 Self-powered sensor automatically harvests magnetic energy

MIT researchers have developed a groundbreaking battery-free sensor that harvests energy from its environment, designed for long-term data monitoring in inaccessible locations like ship engines. The published article describes the sensor that captures energy from magnetic fields around electric wires, allowing it to operate without the need for battery replacement or complex wiring. This innovation is particularly beneficial in applications where power access is limited.

The team addressed significant challenges, such as enabling the sensor to start without initial power (cold start) and efficiently storing energy using capacitors instead of batteries. The system's microcontroller effectively manages the stored energy, determining when to activate the sensor and how to adjust energy harvesting for optimal performance. This approach not only simplifies installation but also expands the potential for deploying sensors in various environments, paving the way for more efficient and sustainable monitoring solutions in industrial settings.
