Market Analysis: Important News on US Inflation Rock Financial Markets

According to data published yesterday, the actual CPI value was = 3.2%, expected = 3.3%, previous value = 3.7%. The Core CPI value also dropped from the previous value = 0.2% to the current value = 0.1%.

Thus, inflation in the United States is confidently approaching the target of 2%, which minimises the likelihood of further tightening of monetary policy.

The news was followed by a sharp weakening of the dollar as market participants believe the rate hike cycle is over. Now the topic of discussion โ€œwhen the Fed will start cutting ratesโ€ is becoming more relevant. It is expected that monetary policy easing is just around the corner, and a more affordable dollar will create conditions for business development.

As a result, US dollar-denominated financial assets rose sharply in price amid news of falling inflation:
โ†’ gold rose in price by approximately 1.2% to the resistance level of 1,970;
โ†’ shares went up in price. The S&P 500 index even broke through the upper boundary of the channel, which we indicated in yesterday's analysis, indicating signals of increased demand;
โ†’ currencies rose in price paired with the dollar.

The GBP/USD rate rose yesterday to a 2-month high.

However, today there was news about the level of inflation now from the UK. The CPI index was: actual = 4.6%, expected = 4.7%, previous value = 6.7%.

That is, the fight against inflation in the UK is also yielding results, although it will most likely take longer to achieve the target indicators than in the USA.

The reaction to today's news was a slight decline in GBP/USD after yesterday's rise.

Moreover, the daily chart shows that technically, a rollback can develop into a more significant movement, since:
โ†’ the rate is near the upper border of an important downward channel (shown in red);
โ†’ the resistance level for GBP/USD could be the psychological level of 1.25 pounds per US dollar.

Market Analysis: Financial Markets Waiting for Important News

Get ready for a surge in volatility in the coming days, because:
โ†’ today at 16:30 GMT+3: news will be published on inflation in the USA;
โ†’ tomorrow at 22:00-22:30 GMT+3: news from the Federal Reserve on the interest rate will be published;
โ†’ on Thursday: news from the central banks of Europe, Great Britain, Switzerland will be published.

Add in geopolitical tensions, the possibility of Biden's impeachment, news on unemployment and retail sales in the US and other factors affecting prices โ€” this week is likely to be very turbulent before financial market participants go on holiday.

The greatest optimism reigns in the stock market. The S&P 500 index updated its maximum for the year. Because investors believe that inflation will continue to cool, and over time the Federal Reserve will cut rates, giving new impetus to corporate growth. This expectation is probably already factored into the current price, so deviations from expectations can trigger unexpected price movements.

Assessing the EUR/USD chart, we can note that:

โ†’ the psychological level of 1.100 worked as resistance, as we expected on November 29;
โ†’ the rate is near the lower border of the ascending channel, however, energetic price rebounds, which are typical when touching the lower border in strong bullish markets, are not observed;
โ†’ level 1.0835 changed its action from support to resistance (as the arrows show).

In general, it is very likely that the reaction to each subsequent news can adjust the reaction to each previous one. Therefore, the likelihood of falling into a trap in the EUR/USD market increases, for example, in a likely scenario of a false rebound from the lower border of the ascending channel followed by its bearish breakdown, which will support the strengthening of the USD, which unfolds in December, as indicated by EMA(100).

Oil Markets: Why Could the Risk Premium Fade

Oil markets have recently reacted to geopolitical developments โ€” but the more important signal may lie in how price action is evolving afterwards.

In this video, we look at why the risk premium in oil could begin to fade, despite ongoing tensions. The focus is not only on supply-side headlines, but on positioning, market adaptation, and shifting expectations around potential de-escalation.

When significant news fails to push prices higher, it may indicate that risks are already priced in โ€” or that market participants are reassessing their impact.

This shifts the framework from reacting to headlines towards analysing market behaviour and follow-through.

Weekly Market Insights with Gary Thomson: ECB Interest Rate, US Inflation, and UK GDP

Three key economic events could shape market sentiment in the second week of September: the ECB interest rate decision, the latest UK GDP data and US inflation figures.

In this video, Gary Thomson looks at what these releases could mean for monetary policy expectations and major currency, gold and equity markets.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Key topics covered:

๐Ÿ”ธ ECB Interest Rate Decision โ€” 10 September โ€” Markets are pricing in a 25-basis-point rate hike after Eurozone inflation accelerated to 3.3%. With the move largely expected, the ECBโ€™s guidance on future policy could be more important for the euro.

๐Ÿ”ธ UK GDP โ€” 11 September โ€” The UK economy grew by 0.4% in Q2, while June GDP expanded by 0.3%. Could the latest data confirm the resilience of the UK economy or point to a loss of momentum?

๐Ÿ”ธ US Inflation โ€” 11 September โ€” US annual inflation slowed to 3.4% in July, while core inflation eased to 2.5%. The latest figures could influence expectations for the Federal Reserveโ€™s next policy move and trigger volatility across USD pairs, gold and equity indices.

With both the ECB and Federal Reserve facing important monetary policy decisions, traders will be watching closely for any signals that could change expectations for future interest rates.

Weekly Market Insights with Gary Thomson: Fed and BoJ Interest Rate Decisions and UK Inflation

Three events could shape currency markets this week, with UK inflation and two key central bank decisions scheduled within just two days.

In this video, Gary Thomson looks at the latest UK inflation data, the Federal Reserveโ€™s unusually uncertain rate decision and the Bank of Japanโ€™s expected policy tightening โ€” and what they could mean for GBP, USD and JPY.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Key topics covered:

๐Ÿ”ธ UK Inflation โ€” 16 September โ€” With inflation risks building again ahead of the Bank of Englandโ€™s September meeting and the UK governmentโ€™s October Budget, could stronger price growth increase expectations for another BoE rate hike later this year and support the British pound?

๐Ÿ”ธ Fed Interest Rate Decision โ€” 16 September โ€” Markets are pricing in around a 62% probability of a 25-basis-point hike. With a September hike far from fully priced in, the decision itself could trigger a notable market reaction. Economic projections and the press conference may have an additional impact on the US dollar.

๐Ÿ”ธ BoJ Interest Rate Decision โ€” 18 September โ€” Markets expect a 25-basis-point rate increase, with USD/JPY already falling to its lowest level since February 2026. Could signals about further quarterly hikes provide additional support for the Japanese yen?

With GBP, USD and JPY all sensitive to changing rate expectations, these three events could bring volatility to currency, commodity and equity markets.
