The Price of
Bitcoin Has Dropped Below 40,000: What's Next?

The value of the main cryptocurrency has fallen below the psychological mark for the first time since December 4th of last year. According to on-chain metrics services, the decline in the price of Bitcoin on cryptocurrency exchanges triggered the liquidation of buyer positions for more than 25 million dollars in just 2 hours.
This decline confirms the significance of the three black crows pattern (indicated by the arrow) and the principle of "buy the rumour, sell the fact" – as we discussed in the Bitcoin price analysis on January 15th.
What's next? Will the price continue to decrease?
JPM head Jamie Dimon, as well as legendary investor Peter Schiff, are pessimistic. In their opinion, Bitcoin is a speculative asset. Jamie Dimon explicitly advises staying away from bitcoins, while Peter Schiff, comparing Bitcoin to gold, prefers the precious metal.
On the other hand, the current decrease may indicate a correction within an upward trend. This perspective is held by financial expert and publicist Anthony Scaramucci.
Today's Bitcoin chart shows that:
β†’ BTC/USD has dropped not only below the psychological mark but also below the lower boundaries A and B of the channels, shown in blue and purple on the chart.
β†’ The RSI indicator points to oversold conditions.
If the market shows signs of recovery, then:
β†’ the nature of this recovery (comparing the speed, volumes, and progress achieved relative to the decline from the peaks on January 11th) will provide important information to determine the strength or weakness of demand in the market;
β†’ the important psychological level at 40,000 will be considered support, an attempt to break which has failed. So far, bears are aiming to establish themselves below $40k. If they succeed, the psychological level may pose resistance in the future.
As long as the price of Bitcoin is below 44,000 (approximately 50% from the January peak), we may consider that the initiative is on the bears' side.

Bitcoin Recovers to January 11 Prices When ETFs Were Approved

Waiting for SEC regulatory approval of applications to create a Bitcoin ETF was an important driver of Bitcoin price growth at the end of 2023. However, when applications were actually approved on January 11, 2024 (here is what we wrote about it), there was a decline in cryptocurrency prices.

In particular, the price of Bitcoin decreased from a maximum of January 11 at USD 48,877 per coin, dropping below USD 40k in the twenties of January.

Fortunately for investors in the cryptocurrency market, the collapse did not occur, and today the price of Bitcoin exceeded USD 46k, thereby recovering to the levels of January 11.

This was facilitated by:
β†’ the Chinese New Year (celebration begins on February 10). As crypto media write, traditionally during this period there is an optimistic revival in the cryptocurrency market.
β†’ Interest in investing in risky assets in anticipation of the Fed lowering interest rates. Access to cryptocurrency investments has become easier with the approval of ETFs.

At the same time, technical analysis of BTC/USD shows that:
β†’ Bitcoin price is in an upward trend, which is described by a blue channel.
β†’ The decline below the lower boundary of the channel at the end of January was short-term. Probably the goal was a false breakdown of psychological support at 40 thousand. An example of such patterns could be punctures of the USD 25k level during 2023. Or punctures at the level of 30k in 2021.

How strong is the bullish sentiment? This will be more clear after the Chinese New Year celebrations are over. And also on the action of the price of Bitcoin β€” after all, it is now near the resistance block, which forms the level of 47k (it prevented the growth of the price of Bitcoin in January) and the median line of the channel. If optimism quickly dries up, it is possible that the price of Bitcoin may roll back to the support at 43,600, which is strengthened by the lower border of the channel.

Bitcoin Price Exceeds Psychological Level of $50k

The last time the BTC price was above $50,000 was in December 2021, making its way to the low around $15,500 reached in November 2022.

Reaching the $50,000 level was facilitated by:
β†’ waiting for the halving, after which the price of Bitcoin is believed to receive a bullish impulse due to a reduction in supply;
β†’ the effect of the approval of a Bitcoin ETF;
β†’ expectation of easing of the Fed's monetary policy, which increases interest in risky assets. By the way, the Nasdaq-100 technology stock index set a historical high yesterday, breaking the level of 18,000 points.

At the same time, the BTC/USD chart shows that:
β†’ the price of Bitcoin moves within an ascending channel (shown in blue), which dates back to last fall;
β†’ from the point of view of technical analysis, with this channel construction, the price of Bitcoin still has some room to rise to its upper limit.

However, please note that:
β†’ the widely known crypto fear and greed index has a value of 79 out of 100, indicating extreme greed;
β†’ the RSI indicator is in the overbought zone and is forming a bearish divergence pattern, which is a sign of weakening buying pressure;
β†’ exceeding the psychological level can result in a false breakout, as was the case with a short-term decline in the price of Bitcoin below the support level of 40,000.

Considering the above arguments, there is reason to believe that if the Bitcoin rally continues, it may soon be replaced by a correction to allow the market to β€œblow off steam” at least in the short term.

Bitcoin Price Risks Not Staying above $50k

On February 14, a strong bullish impulse was recorded in the BTC/USD market, which pushed the price of bitcoin to the area above USD 50k.

The main driver of growth was the effect of the launch of a bitcoin ETF. More than a month has passed since this event, and according to media reports, the ETF has seen an influx of more than USD 7 billion. For example, BlackRock has about 125k bitcoins on its balance sheet to support its ETF fund.

Also adding to the positive mood among market participants is news about the benefits received by companies that invested in bitcoin: MicroStrategy, Block and others. Among the latest news is Reddit's decision to invest in bitcoin.

However, technical analysis of the BTC/USD chart shows alarming signs:
β†’ bitcoin price has slightly exceeded the upper limit of the larger ascending channel (shown in green), but how does it behave in tests? The upper border has changed its role from resistance to support (according to the classic technical analysis pattern), but rebounds from this support line quickly lose momentum. The price does not seem to have the energy (force of demand) to rise from the existing support level.
β†’ Bitcoin price dropped to the lower border of a smaller ascending channel (shown in blue) - a sign that the February positive is running out.

Given the signs of weakening demand, it is possible that we will see an attempt by the bears to take the initiative and return the price of bitcoin below the psychological level of 50k per coin.

BTC/USD Price Exceeds $60,000 Per Coin

Several factors contributed to this:
β†’ Effect associated with the approval of Bitcoin ETF. The media writes that investments in these financial instruments amount to about 9k bitcoins per day, and miners produce only 900 bitcoins per day. The total investment in the Bitcoin ETF after approval on January 11 is approaching USD 50 billion. By comparison, just over USD 90 billion is invested in the 19 largest gold ETFs.
β†’ Expectations that Ethereum ETFs will be approved in the future, simplifying access to investments in the second largest cryptocurrency by capitalization.
β†’ Expectations for the Fed to cut interest rates. Cheaper credit means greater appetite for investment in higher-risk assets.
β†’ Expectations for the halving (scheduled for April), after which a bull market usually begins.

In mid-February, we wrote that the price of Bitcoin did not show bullish progress after exceeding the psychological level of USD 50k per Bitcoin. Technical analysis of the Bitcoin chart shows that this was due to resistance (shown by the arrow) from the median line of the green ascending channel, within which the market has been developing since the fall of 2023. Yesterday's rise, which followed the breakdown of the psychological level of 60k US dollars per bitcoin, marked the upper limit of this channel just above 64k US dollars per bitcoin and made it possible to update its contours.

Now the upper limit of the green channel acts as resistance, it is possible that after an increase of +25% in 2.5 days from point A to point B, buyers will want to take profits β€” this confirms the fact of yesterday's bearish impulse, in which the price of Bitcoin dropped from USD 64k to USD 59k.

So it is safe to assume that the market is ready for consolidation. But if the extremely optimistic growth rate shown by the blue lines continues, the price of Bitcoin could reach an all-time high of USD 67.7k as soon as spring arrives.

After Updating the Historical High, the Price of
Bitcoin Collapsed by 14%

Bitcoin's previous all-time high price, recorded on November 10, 2021, was around USD 68,900 per coin (depending on exchanges).

But yesterday, the price of Bitcoin exceeded 69k! However, the jubilation from the new historical peak quickly gave way to fear β€” as the BTC/USD rate began to fall rapidly. From peak A to low B – the price traveled a path of more than -14% in just 5 hours.

These events highlight 2 characteristic features of the cryptocurrency market:
β†’ Excessive volatility, which is not typical for the stock and foreign exchange markets. For comparison: on October 19, 1987 β€” Black Monday β€” the S&P 500 index fell by about 20.5%. After this incident, there were no days when the drop exceeded 14%.
β†’ Emotionality of the market and the importance of psychological levels. At these levels, the price of Bitcoin often makes false punctures. Yesterday, there were 2 such punctures: a false bullish puncture of the 2021 top, and a false bearish puncture of the round level of 60k dollars for Bitcoin.

It is also worth noting that yesterday’s low was strengthened by support lines:
β†’ Fibo level 50% of the rally 0β†’A.
β†’ The lower border of the ascending channel (shown in blue).

Technical analysis of the Bitcoin chart shows that the price continues to move in an ascending channel, moreover, the price has returned to its upper half. It is possible that yesterday's sharp decline, which saw over USD 400 million in long positions liquidated across 8 major crypto exchanges, is an extremely aggressive form of correction that occurred as part of the current uptrend. If so, then in March we may witness new hikes in the price of Bitcoin to historical peaks.

Correction in Crypto Markets: BTC/USD Rate Drops to $60,000

On March 18, we wrote that bears became more active near the $70,000 level.

As the BTC/USD chart shows, today the price of Bitcoin is already close to the psychological level of USD 60k, while the price of Ethereum is close to USD 3,000.

According to MarketWatch, experts consider the decline to be a correction that is β€œlong overdue” as part of an upward trend. According to Fundstrat, Monday saw net outflows from BTC ETFs for the first time since March 1, amounting to about $154.3 million.

What's next?

From a technical analysis point of view, the price of Bitcoin, given an increase of approximately 90% from point A (around USD 38.8k) to point B (around USD 73.4k), a normal correction of 50% indicates the prospect of a decline to the area of USD 56.1k .

Having constructed a channel (shown in blue), taking into account extrema A and B, as well as turning points (indicated by arrows), it is permissible to assume that the price of Bitcoin will drop to the lower boundary of the channel in the area of $57k, where it currently lies.

Thus, the USD 56-57k area can be seen as a target for the bears, who have seized the initiative after the upward momentum has exhausted itself (judging by the divergence on the RSI indicator).

In the event of a deeper correction, a test of the psychological mark of USD 50k per Bitcoin cannot be ruled out.

However, despite the significant decline (about 15% over the last 6 days), the Bitcoin market can be considered bullish:
β†’ the blue ascending channel has not yet been broken;
β†’ the approaching halving is seen as a growth driver;
β†’ according to the new Bitcoin price forecast from Standard Chartered, the target has been increased to USD 150k by the end of 2024 and USD 250k by the end of 2025.

Bitcoin Price Recovered over the Weekend, But Market Anxiety Remains

From the point of view of technical analysis of BTC/USD, on Friday evening the price of Bitcoin was near the lower boundary of the ascending channel (shown in blue). This was alarming as it indicated that the market action could result in a weekly bearish candle forming with the price of BTC down by around 5% β€” something that hasn't happened since August of last year.

However, this did not happen, as the price recovered over the weekend, forming rebounds from the lower border of the channel. The lower shadows of the candles are a sign of demand forces. Moreover, the bulls have broken through the downward trend line (shown in black). Will the bulls be able to return the price of Bitcoin to an upward trajectory within the specified trend?

Doubts remain.

β†’ Bitcoin β€œstill looks overbought,” JPMorgan strategists warned, predicting a decline to USD 42k.
β†’ Bloomberg writes about record capital outflows from Bitcoin ETFs last week.
β†’ The level of 70k looks like an important psychological resistance. Above it, the Bitcoin price formed a double top pattern with an all-time high at point A, after which the bears clearly became more active. They successfully pushed the price to minimum B, breaking the support of the channel median line.

The price of Bitcoin starts the new week around the 50% retracement from the decline A→B (about -16%). This gives reason to assume the development of consolidation.

But if the price again falls to the lower border of the channel, then this will more clearly indicate the inability of the bulls to resume the upward trend β€” and therefore put the lower border of the channel at risk of a bearish breakout.

BTC/USD Analysis: Bearish Arguments Become More Convincing

On March 18, we wrote about the activation of bears near the USD 70,000 level and the likelihood of consolidation forming near this psychological mark.

On March 25, we wrote that anxiety remains in the Bitcoin market.

Technical analysis of the BTC/USD chart with new data on the behavior of Bitcoin prices today relative to the previously designated levels and lines shows that bearish arguments are becoming more convincing:

β†’ the median line of the ascending channel acted as resistance (shown by the first arrow);
β†’ the price has formed a consolidation zone (shown in green) with a subsequent bearish exit from it;
β†’ after a bearish breakdown of the lower border of the ascending channel, it showed signs of resistance (shown by the second arrow);
→ the increase in B→C is about 50% of the decrease in A→B, which corresponds to the proportion of the normal intermediate recovery within the dominant bearish trend.

Attempts to reach the level of USD 70k for Bitcoin in April were unsuccessful. The inability of the cryptocurrency price to demonstrate bullish dynamics is alarming due to the approaching halving, which is considered a positive factor influencing the price of Bitcoin.

It is possible that further developments will provide more turning points for building a downward channel.

BTC/USD Analysis:
Bitcoin Price Rises Ahead of Halving

The halving (reduction of block mining rewards) is expected to occur on April 19-20.

Theoretically, Bitcoin mining will become less profitable, leading to a reduction in coin supply. Given unchanged demand, this should drive up the BTC/USD price. Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse has forecasted that the cryptocurrency market cap will double by the end of 2024, reaching $5 trillion, with Bitcoin's halving contributing to this growth.

In practice, Bitcoin price is influenced by too many factors to conclusively prove the bullish impact of halving. For instance, looking at history, the last halving occurred on May 11, 2020, and the price increased by approximately 12% in the following week. On the other hand, today's Bitcoin price might already reflect the imminent halving.
Nevertheless, the market currently shows predominantly positive sentiment, as over the weekend, BTC/USD price rose by around 2.5%.

According to the technical analysis of the BTC/USD chart today:
β†’ From April 2-4, there was no downward pressure on the market to push the price below the lower boundary of the ascending channel (shown in blue), which remains relevant.
β†’ Conversely, a series of higher lows forming since April 2 indicates bullish intentions to break above the descending channel (shown in red).

Therefore, the approaching halving and associated positive expectations could lead to:
β†’ Breaking above the consolidating zone (shown with black lines).
β†’ Overcoming a significant resistance level near the psychological mark of $70,000 per coin.
In this scenario, the nearest target for bulls could be the median line of the blue ascending channel.

Bitcoin Price Bullish after Halving-2024

On April 19, 2024, a halving occurred in the Bitcoin network, resulting in the reward for the mined block amounting to 3.125 BTC.

Historically, after the halving (which is associated with a reduction in supply), the price of Bitcoin heads to all-time highs. But, as Forbes reports, Goldman Sachs analysts warn against extrapolating the results of Bitcoin price movements after past halvings to the current moment. After all, back then, the halvings occurred during a period of loose monetary policy by the Federal Reserve, while this time the Fed is struggling with harsher-than-expected inflation.

JPMorgan analysts led by Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou are also cautious. β€œWe do not expect Bitcoin price increases post halving as it has been already priced in,” they wrote.

However, this morning Bitcoin is trading above USD 66,000, the highest price in a week. Adding to the market's positivity are rumors that the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) in Hong Kong is going to approve spot applications for Bitcoin ETFs.

Technical analysis of the BTC/USD chart shows that:
β†’ Bitcoin price made a double false breakout of the psychological level of USD 60,000 last week – April 17 and 18;
β†’ after this maneuver, the Bitcoin price confidently recovered into the consolidation zone, shown by a narrowing green triangle;
β†’ Bitcoin price today may be affected by the USD 66,500 level, which is the central axis of the consolidation zone, as well as the former support level (as shown by the arrows);

What about the longer term? The demand activity seen around the USD 60,000 level can be interpreted as a stable interest in the main cryptocurrency on the part of investors, which may ultimately lead to an attempt by the Bitcoin price to attack the USD 70,000 level near the upper border of the consolidation zone.
