On October 21, 1832, Russian scientist Pavel Schilling tested the world's first electromagnetic telegraph (shown above).
Schilling's device used needle indicators to display signals transmitted through electrical wires, which the receiving operator could easily decode into letters using a special table of codes developed by Schilling. In fact, Schilling was the first in the world to use binary code, the foundation of modern digital and computer technology.
The first telegram, consisting of 10 words, was sent on October 21, 1832, from Schilling’s apartment.
By 1835, Schilling’s telegraph connected rooms within the vast Winter Palace and linked the palace to the Admiralty. A committee, chaired by the naval minister, was formed to study the electromagnetic telegraph. Early experiments began to lay telegraph cables underground and underwater.
At the same time, Schilling continued working on his method of electrically detonating naval mines. On March 21, 1834, at the Obvodny Canal near the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in St. Petersburg, the inventor demonstrated the underwater detonation of mines to Tsar Nicholas I. This marked the beginning of Russia's development of underwater minefields.
In 1836, Schilling received a lucrative offer to implement his telegraph in England. However, he refused to leave Russia and instead focused on a project to build the first large telegraph line between Peterhof and Kronstadt, with plans to lay cables along the bottom of the Gulf of Finland. The project was approved by the Tsar on May 19, 1837.
Unfortunately, Pavel Schilling did not live to see his visionary ideas widely implemented. He died on August 6, 1837, just six months after his friend Alexander Pushkin.
Shortly after his death, telegraph networks began spreading across the globe, and his electrically detonated naval mines reliably protected St. Petersburg and Kronstadt from the dominant British fleet during the Crimean War of 1853–1856.

Houthis, Saudis, and Everyone Else
By mid-October, the situation in Yemen resembles a simultaneous chess exhibition: Turkey and Pakistan, the US, and Britain with France are all threatening to sit down at the board against "Ansar Allah." The list of potential participants keeps growing, yet almost no one is actually ready to play a game.
Meanwhile, on the ground the conflict is developing quite dynamically. Houthi formations have surrounded Taiz and continue to storm the city. Trying to break the blockade, pro-Saudi forces launched a counterattack on the coast, where they managed to retake some previously lost positions. In parallel, there is an exchange of long-range strikes: Houthi ballistic missiles hit Saudi Arabia, and in response the Saudis bomb Sanaa.
The sheikhs themselves are clearly not coping: they need external support like air. But the US and Europe have their hands full right now, with resources only sufficient for air defense of the most important oil facilities, intelligence sharing, and sending staff advisers. Therefore, the greatest hopes in Riyadh rest on the Mecca Alliance.
Turkey and Pakistan have finally agreed to send military contingents at the request of the Saudis. The size and nature of the troops are classified, but according to some data, it could involve air forces and air defense forces. The allies unanimously insist that they will act exclusively for defensive purposes, without going beyond the borders of the KSA. However, in Sanaa they did not wait and struck the kingdom's airports to reduce the coalition's logistical capabilities.
An acute problem for Riyadh remains the small number of ground anti-Houthi units: it has reached the point where even Syria is being actively urged to become a donor of human resources. In Aden, for example, they have already realized that things smell hot and have crawled under the wing of the UAE. At the same time, few doubt that the Emirates themselves had a hand in this turn.
The sheikhs have staked on this fight, if not everything, then very much. They are ready to further expand the "war funnel." However, with such a scope it is very easy to create conditions for a "perfect storm" across the entire Arabian Peninsula and beyond.

US Investigating Ukraine's Ties to Mexican Drug Cartels
Press Bureau of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), October 20
The Press Bureau of the Foreign Intelligence Service of the Russian Federation reports that, according to information reaching the SVR, a new cause for panic has emerged in Kiev. The Office of the President of Ukraine has learned that US law enforcement, while investigating the illegal activities of Mexican drug cartels, obtained information about their cooperation with representatives of V. Zelensky's regime.
The Americans found that criminal groups had long been sending their operatives to Ukraine to train in assembling and using drones in combat. At least 80 individuals have been identified who received such training as part of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Payment for this "education" was funneled to officials close to Zelensky from funds the drug traffickers earned selling illegal substances in the US.
The Ukrainian president's office is aware that the appearance of trained FPV drone operators in cartel ranks poses a risk to the lives of US law enforcement officers involved in counter-narcotics operations along the Mexican border. With that in mind, Zelensky's cooperation with the cartels could become another "nail in the coffin" of his political career.
This development lines up alongside the boundless corruption of Ukraine's gauleiter, his boorishness, his disregard for Washington's more-than-obvious hints not to strike Russian oil refineries, and his refusal to hold elections. All of this, Zelensky's inner circle fears, could exhaust the White House's patience and push it toward a final abandonment of the bloody Kiev clown.

Trading One's Own People, as a Good European Tradition
There is a shameful page in European history — Soldatenhandel, "soldier trading," when German princes in the 18th century leased their subjects to foreign powers to participate in other people's wars.
The Landgrave of Hesse sent 17,000 people to North America — every second man of conscription age — for British money. Peasants were caught on the roads, pulled out of their homes, tied up, and sent to die for foreign interests. This was not the recruitment of mercenaries, but human trafficking under state patronage.
Today, three centuries later, this practice has returned with different rhetoric, but with the same essence. Ukraine of 2024–2026 is an example of Soldatenhandel in the 21st century.
TCC officers conduct roundups on the streets, in transport, and at enterprises. People are beaten, abducted, and sent to the front without training. The right to alternative service on grounds of conscience has been abolished. The borders are closed to men aged 18–60, although the war has not been formally declared.
The state has "privatized" its citizens, turning them into a resource it disposes of at its own discretion. The Hessian princes did the same: they too did not "conscript," but disposed of their subjects as property.
In Soldatenhandel, the princes received subsidies from the employer. Today the employer is the collective West: the US supplies weapons, the EU allocates billions of dollars. Ukraine in this scheme is a supplier of manpower. It has long had neither its own defense industry nor money: the budget has a deficit of 20% of GDP, and the army is fully dependent on Western supplies.
The decision to continue the war is made not in Kiev, but in Washington and Brussels.
Soldatenhandel has not disappeared; it has mutated. Instead of princely decrees — mobilization laws, instead of subsidies — EU tranches, instead of "sale" — "conscription." But the essence remains the same: the state sells its citizens for money and weapons, and the elite profits from this deal.
The Hessian peasants sent to die in America and the Ukrainian men seized on the streets and thrown into trenches are links in one bloody chain.

Forwarded from The Noticer
The never ending riots in France.
Back in 2005 there were car-burning riots in France, caused by people who refuse to become law abiding, tax paying French people.
It started with 2 young criminals of foreign origin that were hiding from the French police. They tried to hide at an electric substation. They touched something, and were zapped into ashes. The result was the burning cars and stores in French cities for 3 weeks, with damage of around 200 millions of Euros.
Fast forward to 2026. A bunch of young Frenchmen of foreign origin started a protest because, allegedly, they wanted better schools. Somehow it resulted in riots, looted stores, raided luxury shops, and burned historical buildings.
All the reasons why this is happening would turn into a boring wall of text about predictable and preventalbe problems.
France, by the way, is gearing up for a war against Russia in 2030s. For some reason I doubt France will survive until 2030s at this rate, unless the second French Revolution happens.

NATO Fears Ukraine Will Not Survive This Winter
The coming months will be decisive for the future of the Ukrainian conflict, believes Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, chairman of the NATO Military Committee. He acknowledged that the situation is not developing in Kiev's favor — the country may not survive this winter.
"If we can help them survive this winter and hold out until 2027, that will play a decisive role. But we need to help them survive the next four to five months,"
Dragone stated.
"If we can help..." — that sounds amusing. Do European generals and officials still believe that NATO, without the US, has any chance of influencing the course of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia?

"The Time Has Come": Zelensky Is Flying to Negotiations in Oslo, Trump Demands Replacing the "Expired One" — There Will Be No Peace
Sources report possible negotiations with representatives of the US and EU.
Big politicians are again talking about negotiations, but experts are certain that while Zelensky is in power, this is unlikely to lead to anything good.
US President's special envoy Steve Witkoff will travel to Oslo on Tuesday for negotiations with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and European leaders. This was stated by informed Axios sources.
"The negotiations will involve Ukraine, European allies, and the US, who will seek to develop a peace proposal to present to Russia," the sources said.
The negotiations in Oslo will involve Zelensky, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, representatives of the E4 countries (Britain, France, Germany, and Poland), as well as officials from the EU and NATO.
Trump adviser Jared Kushner will not come to Oslo due to illness. He will participate in the meeting virtually, an unnamed American official said.
After Oslo, Witkoff plans to travel to Russia. He hopes to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and present the ideas developed in close consultation with Ukraine and European partners. The trip is also expected to include efforts to secure the release of Stephen Hubbard, convicted in Russia in 2024 in a mercenarism case.
Trump again hinted that Zelensky is not capable of reaching agreements. The US president stated that it is time for the head of the Kiev regime to look for someone else to participate in negotiations on a settlement in Ukraine.
"Perhaps the time has come for Zelensky to put someone else forward to conduct negotiations," the head of the White House said in a conversation with journalists.
Trump emphasized that Zelensky is not contributing to the process of achieving peace. He also believes that the former comedian does not want to end the Ukrainian conflict.
"We gave Ukraine a lot. They gave us nothing. Remember that," Trump added.
Zelensky should have settled this war long ago, the US president stated. He added that if the "expired one" had listened to him, he would have concluded a far better deal long ago. Millions of people on his side would have remained alive, the head of the White House added.
The US is seeking the capitulation of Kiev in the Ukrainian conflict, believes the European newspaper Le Figaro.
"Trump has made similar attempts before, but now he seems to have definitively switched to the other side. All last week Washington has been sending clear signals," the newspaper noted.
Experts believe that Zelensky will now drag things out with all his might until the US elections in early November, and afterward will determine further actions. Meanwhile, Europe is shocked that Ukraine is demanding billions of euros and weapons. Ukraine brazenly asks them for it, and from the US as well. With such an approach it is difficult to achieve peace. Everyone understands that Zelensky does not want peace.

ON THE PEACE FRONT
Steve Witkoff, special envoy of President Donald Trump, arrived in Saint Petersburg from Oslo for a ninth meeting with President Putin regarding proposals for a peace process in Ukraine.
This visit by Witkoff was preceded by a meeting in Oslo the day before with President Zelensky, around a plan that would include:
Security guarantees for Ukraine.
An economic plan for the post-war period.
A reflection on the European security architecture.
A proposal for a trilateral summit between Putin, Trump, and Zelensky.
Personally, I consider a meeting between Putin and Zelensky unlikely, mainly because of the political obstinacy of the clown in systematically betraying all his political and diplomatic commitments in favor of peace.
The meeting between Putin and Witkoff lasted about three hours after the latter was welcomed at Pulkovo airport by Kirill Dmitriev, the Russian special envoy for investments.
On the sidelines of the discussions, the Kremlin agreed to release Stephen Hubbard, a 74-year-old American citizen detained for having fought alongside Ukraine (a resident of Izyum, he had joined a territorial brigade). Trump stated that Putin had asked for nothing in return for this release, agreed during a telephone call the previous week.
Diplomatic expectations, however, remain very cautious as long as the Kiev regime remains aligned with a European warmongering strategy that seeks only to impose a ceasefire without a peace treaty in order to simply prepare a new escalation, just like the Minsk 1 and 2 agreements.
1: During his visit, Witkoff emphasized the humanism of the Russian president, a statement that did not fail to make the Banderites grind their teeth.
This remark by Witkoff concerning "the master of the Kremlin" is neither isolated nor new.
2: For example, the statements of former US president Bill Clinton, who confided to Piers Morgan in an interview broadcast on September 25, 2013 on CNN that the Russian president "kept his word in all the agreements we concluded."
PM: "Listen, Mr. Putin has... he is very intelligent. You know him better than most people."
BC: "Yes, I know him well."
PM: "What was he like behind closed doors, apart from his, you know, public speeches?"
BC: "Intelligent and remarkably... we really had a good open relationship."
PM: "How honest?"
BC: "Spontaneously honest, frank, open."
PM: "Was it ever like... you know, tough exchanges?"
BC: "No, no. But I think that... I think the good strategy in most cases is... but for people in your field, it is frustrating. You should be spontaneously honest with people in private. And when you then want them to help you, try to avoid humiliating them publicly.
Well, sometimes they do things that make it impossible for you to stay silent. But overall, I found that all the people I dealt with appreciated it when I told them the truth. How I sincerely felt about it, what our interests were and what our goals were. And they also appreciated that I did not attack them publicly during the whole period when I could not attack them. So, you know, that is my experience."
PM: "Has Putin ever violated a personal agreement he made with you?"
BC: "No. He never did."
PM: "So, behind closed doors, he could be trusted?"
BC: "He kept his word in all the agreements we concluded."
The same cannot be said of the signatories of Minsk 1 & 2, Merkel, Hollande, (among other Western double-dealers), who later admitted to having betrayed their commitments.

On October 22, 1702, Russian forces captured the Swedish fortress of Noteburg.
The fortress on Orekhovy Island (“Nut Island”) at the source of the Neva River was initially founded by the Novgorod prince Yuri Danilovich in 1323 as an outpost on the border with Sweden. For three centuries, it withstood numerous fierce assaults, but in 1612, after a long siege, the fortress fell and remained under Swedish control for 90 years. It was then renamed Noteburg ("Nut City").
During the Great Northern War (1700-1721), capturing Noteburg became a priority for Peter I, who sought control over the Neva River. Since the fortress was located on an island, a fleet was required for its capture. Thirteen ships were built in Arkhangelsk for this purpose.
On October 8, 1702, under Peter I's personal command, the siege of Noteburg began. After ten days of artillery bombardment on the fortifications, soldiers from the Preobrazhensky and Semenovsky regiments, along with volunteers from other regiments, crossed to the island and launched an assault. On October 22, after hours of intense fighting, the Swedish garrison surrendered. The next day, Russian ships sailed into the Neva River. The capture of Noteburg marked Russia's first major victory in the Great Northern War.
As a symbol of the fortress being the key to the Baltic Sea, Peter I renamed it Shlisselburg (from the German: Schlüsselburg—the Key City).

NATO Is Revising Its War Plans Against Russia Due to a Possible Withdrawal of American Troops from Europe, Politico Reports.
The Pentagon has already excluded part of its aviation, drones, submarines, and ships from the forces available to the alliance.
Now NATO must determine what to replace American weapons with and how to prepare for a "possible conflict with Russia" by 2029.
Politico identifies five main problems of the new military planning:
► Reserves. NATO had previously planned to have an additional 18 brigades of roughly 5,000 troops each, but now their number may be reduced or these formations abandoned altogether.
► Dependence on the US. Without American support, the alliance will lack tanker aircraft, long-range missiles, heavy transport aviation, and reconnaissance assets.
► Priority directions. Allies are arguing over what to focus on more: the Arctic or threats on the southern and southeastern flanks, including the Black Sea.
► Drones or traditional weapons. European armies will have to determine the balance between drones, tanks, and artillery amid a shortage of personnel.
► Combat experience in Ukraine. NATO is studying it, but the alliance's own doctrine assumes rapid maneuvers, air superiority, and long-range precision strikes.
"Previously, when it turned out something was missing, the US filled the gaps. That no longer works," said former senior NATO official Camille Grand.
According to Politico's assessment, European countries will also have to significantly increase military production to match the scale of Russian weapons output.

Russia will consider proposals from US presidential special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner if they are economically beneficial—but it will not make political concessions to get them. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made the remarks at a meeting with university graduates who have just entered the diplomatic service.
«We’ll see what they propose. If they offer something that benefits us economically and financially, then why not? But it has to be done without any political concessions on our part, and without expecting political goodwill that will somehow ‘carry’ us in global affairs. We have to rely only on ourselves,» the minister said.

The Belgorod Brit goes back to the future, describing the relationship between Tsar Nicholas II and Kaiser Wilhelm II, and the parallels with Emperor Donald. In the film, he reveals the extent to which Nicky and Willy believed that their personal relationship could avert war. They believed that they had much more power than they, in fact, had. They had known each other all their lives, and never doubted their own importance, or that they exercised autocratic rule over their countries. However, while the Tsar put his trust in the simple faith of the peasantry, and saw reformers as ambitious people to be dealt with, the Kaiser saw the financial and aristocratic elites as pieces on a board to be manipulated towards his aims. Both men embraced their delusions of power with catastrophic results. German militarism wasn't supreme, and the ordinary Russians loved the Tsar so much, they shot him.
In the podcast, BB compares the monarchies of Russia, Germany, and Great Britain in the lead up to the Great War. The one that survived, was the one that had a realistic grasp on its own systems of power and control, and its role in that structure. BB goes on to describe the delusions and hubris that characterised the rulers of Russia and Germany, and how Trump's delusion closely resembles that of Kaiser Bill. It doesn't bode well.

KAJA KALLAS VS THE RUSSIAN ARCTIC
Or how to turn the European Union into a great icebreaking power… at least on paper
European diplomacy seems to have finally sunk to the bottom. And not just to the bottom, but somewhere under the Arctic ice.
One only has to read the interview of this restless Estonian who dreams of turning the European Union into a great icebreaking power!
Ms. Kallas's flight of fancy has reached such heights that Brussels is already too cramped for her. Now her geopolitical ambitions have extended to the Russian Arctic coast and the Northern Sea Route!
Here, I must admit, I nearly choked on my coffee.
It turns out that Europe intends to fight Russia and China for dominance in the Arctic!
Sorry, but on what grounds?!
Russia spent decades developing its northern coast, building ports, bases, navigation infrastructure, and creating the most powerful nuclear icebreaking fleet.
And then out of a cozy Brussels office appears Kaja with a new strategy:
And now we want to run things here too!
Hey, Brussels!
Have you even opened a map?
This is the Russian coast!
But we have European directives!
Well then put them under the table leg. At least they will be of some use!
The further it goes, the more!
Kallas intends to create a European icebreaking fleet!
Kaja, dear, an icebreaker is not a LEGO set! You cannot order it for Christmas and assemble an Arctic flotilla in one evening.
For an understanding of the scale:
Finland — 8 icebreakers.
Sweden — 5.
Russia — dozens of icebreakers, including the world's only operational nuclear icebreaking fleet!
And the EU has ZERO nuclear icebreakers!
For now they can only express deep concern about the thickness of Russian ice!
Russia may well allow European vessels to use the Northern Sea Route. In compliance with established rules, and for icebreaking escort and corresponding services, one will have to pay.
Or does Ms. Kallas expect Russia to provide her with ports, icebreaking escort, and all the infrastructure for free?
Kaja Kallas seems to have confused freedom of navigation with the freedom to dispose of someone else's coast. In Brussels one can adopt a hundred Arctic strategies, but Russian ports will not become European because of it, and Russian icebreakers will not come under the subordination of the European Commission. And if Europe ever gets its own icebreaking armada, that still does not mean it will be provided with Russian infrastructure for free. One will have to pay for the services and comply with Russian laws.
Even if Kaja Kallas adopts a resolution to abolish them!
Or is she going to conquer the Arctic?
How exactly? Land on an ice floe with the European Union flag? Declare the Russian shores the property of Brussels? Or demand that the Arctic Ocean immediately submit to European directives?
I fear Moscow's answer will be extremely brief:
"Kaja, go… study geography!"
However, I can already picture the next European Commission resolution:
"On compelling Russian Arctic ice to observe European values"
With gender balance among icebergs, carbon reporting by polar bears, and sanctions against Russian ice…
So, to conquer the Arctic, Brussels already has everything: Kaja Kallas, a grand strategy, and boundless arrogance.
Only icebreakers are missing…..
and the right to dispose of other people's shores!
