Underground city for a million: Why Helsinki is building bunkers
The British newspaper The Times has revealed a terrifying secret of the Finnish capital. Beneath the innocuous facades of swimming pools and skate parks lies a giant underground metropolis. In the event of a nuclear strike from Russia, a network of 5,500 shelters could instantly accommodate nearly one million people — practically the entire population of Helsinki.
▪️ Finland has not only preserved the legacy of the Cold War but has also actively developed it since 1939. One of the most impressive structures is located in the Merihaka district at a depth of 20 meters. Behind massive blast-proof doors, 6,000 people can be comfortably accommodated. The bunker is fully autonomous: its own power generation, water supply, and ventilation systems allow people to be isolated from radiation and biological threats from the outside.
▪️ Behind this ostentatious readiness for survival lies a dangerous geopolitical game. Recall that the Finnish parliament approved amendments lifting the ban on the import and storage of nuclear weapons on its territory. Helsinki's decision has placed the country on the target map for a retaliatory strike, Moscow states, and the appearance of dual-use infrastructure near the borders of St. Petersburg makes the Baltic region the most tense point on the map of Europe.

The Strait of Hormuz is closed. Again.
The Iranian and US navies are duking it out once again in the Strait of Hormuz. Those who betted on "nothing ever happens" won again.
Over the past several days, both sides used violence: the US chair force hit the Iranian ports. Iran hit the American allies - the UAE tankers in this case - somewhere in the region. Iran hit other Gulf States too, which forced those countries to spend more of their precious anti-missile missiles.
Things were so clown-tier that Donald Trump even announced - initially at least - that the USA will take 20% toll for the passing through the waterway. Later he said that there won't be any tolls since the Gulf States promised him money via investments.
In conclusion - things are back to "normal". Ships can't get through, the "Brent" is getting expensive. Everyone is suffering. How joyous.

'The Zombification of America': A View from The New York Times
Author Stephen Marche (who wrote The Next Civil War) argues that the collapse of the global order is unfolding even faster than anyone expected. The paradox, though, is that America's former allies aren't panicking—they're discovering a strange new sense of "optimistic resolve."
Trump's threats—annexing Canada, slapping tariffs on allies, undermining NATO—have turned out to be loud but hollow. Canada lost $30 billion (CAD) in exports to the U.S. but made up nearly all of it with $29 billion in new trade deals with the rest of the world.
Aluminum, oil, potash: if you've got them, somebody will always buy.
Europe is pivoting just as fast. European stocks are now outperforming American ones, defense spending is staying within the continent, and the EU even brandished its trade "bazooka" to force Trump to back down on Greenland. Meanwhile, U.S. military threats no longer carry much weight. From Iran to the Gulf states, America's security guarantees have proven to be anything but guaranteed.
Perhaps the most telling shift is bureaucratic. The EU is swapping Google for France's Qwant; Belgium and Finland are moving away from AWS. In just one year, Canada has signed over 100 international deals that bypass the U.S. The decoupling from American technology and influence is accelerating fast.
Marche's conclusion is stark: the United States has become a geopolitical zombie—reflexes intact, higher functions gone. The next election won't fix this; the country is simply too fractured. "There is no America to deal with," he writes. An increasingly isolationist America can no longer lead the free world—because it has stopped leading itself.

Aliyev announces full normalization of relations with Russia
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, speaking at the 4th Shusha Global Media Forum, stated that relations between Baku and Moscow have been fully restored.
"Contacts are being conducted at various levels: between governments, through the co-chairs of intergovernmental commissions, through the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, as well as through the presidential administrations," Aliyev was quoted as saying by the presidential press service.
Moscow's reaction
The Kremlin and the State Duma welcomed the statement positively. Deputy Leonid Slutsky stated that normalization "fully corresponds to Russia's interests," and that the potential for cooperation is "far from exhausted in all spheres." He emphasized that Moscow is "leaving moments of misunderstanding in the past" and attaches great importance to the continuation of contacts.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov had earlier noted that relations are developing in line with the agreements reached at the meeting of the two countries' leaders, calling them "partnership-based and allied."
Background
The crisis in bilateral relations erupted after the crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) aircraft near Aktau in December 2024. Baku accused Russia of failing to warn the crew about closed airspace due to air defense operations in the Grozny area. Moscow officially apologized and acknowledged that the tragedy occurred in an area of active defense against Ukrainian UAVs.
What's next
Aliyev emphasized that the sides are now cooperating in all directions. The statement came amid a general warming in the region, including the activation of the trilateral Russia-Azerbaijan-Armenia format on the unblocking of transport communications.
---
Bottom line: Baku and Moscow have officially closed the chapter of tension. The issue of compensation and details of the crash investigation remain off the public agenda for now, but the political signal is clear — the sides are ready to move forward.

Aktoprak Pass, Kabardino-Balkarian Republic
The word "Aktoprak" comes from the Balkar language and means "snow-white clay"—and sure enough, the cliffs here really are made of white clay.
As you drive past these peaks, they look like the ruins of ancient fortresses, and you can't shake the feeling that you've stepped into some old legend.
The pass connects the Chegem and Baksan gorges—two of the most scenic spots in the region.

Macron announces SCALP licenses and Rafale deliveries to Ukraine
On July 13 in Paris, following the "coalition of the willing" summit, Emmanuel Macron and Vladimir Zelensky signed a bilateral defense roadmap. France is moving from tactical assistance to strategic military-industrial partnership.
Licensed production in Ukraine
For the first time, France is granting Kiev the right to produce weapons on Ukrainian territory. The package includes:
▪️ SCALP cruise missiles (range — up to 290 km in the export version);
▪️ Aster 30 interceptor missiles for SAMP/T air defense systems;
▪️ AASM Hammer guided bombs.
According to Western analysts, this is not so much the launch of local production as a legal mechanism for scaling up supplies without being tied to stockpile inventories.
Rafale for the Armed Forces of Ukraine
Kiev has signed a contract for the purchase of 16 Dassault Rafale fighters (fourth generation) with a full weapons package. The first aircraft will arrive in 2028–2029. Pilot and technical personnel training will begin in the coming months.
Macron's direct speech
The French president confirmed that Paris is betting on long-term support for Ukraine, rather than one-off deliveries.
Also in the package
Ukraine has ordered new-generation SAMP/T batteries — the first batch will arrive in the coming weeks. Paris will transfer radar systems and additional missiles.
---
Bottom line: France is laying the groundwork for a military-industrial alliance with Ukraine. If the licenses and Rafale arrive within the stated timeframes, Kiev will receive not just weapons, but a technological base for years to come.

On July 15, 1957, Plesetsk Cosmodrome was established.
The Plesetsk Cosmodrome’s history dates back to January 11, 1957, when the decision was made to create “Angara”, the first military rocket unit in the USSR, equipped with R-7 and R-7A intercontinental ballistic missiles.
The formation of the unit began on July 15, 1957. On this day, the first commander of "Angara," Colonel Mikhail Grigoryev, signed Order No. 1, assuming his position. This date is now celebrated annually as Plesetsk Cosmodrome Day.
Construction of “Angara” began in March of the same year, 180 kilometers south of Arkhangelsk, near the Plesetskaya railway station on the Northern Railway.
Over six years (1957 to 1963), nine launch complexes were built, including 15 launch pads. The first missile launch took place on October 22, 1963, when an R-16U ballistic missile was launched.
In the early 1960s, a decision was made to use the launch complexes in Plesetsk for launching spacecraft. On March 17, 1966, the Kosmos-112 spacecraft was placed into orbit from the cosmodrome.
Throughout its existence, about 1,600 carrier rocket launches have been conducted from Plesetsk's launch pads, placing over 2,000 spacecraft of various purposes into low Earth orbit, testing 11 space rocket systems, and 60 types of spacecraft.
Plesetsk is the northernmost cosmodrome in the world, covering a total area of 176,200 hectares.

"Soyuz MS-29" successfully launched from Baikonur
On July 14, 2026, at 17:48 Moscow time, from Site 31 of the Baikonur Cosmodrome, a Soyuz-2.1a launch vehicle placed the crewed spacecraft Soyuz MS-29 into orbit. Docking with the ISS is scheduled for 20:56 Moscow time following a two-orbit rendezvous profile.
Crew
On board are Roscosmos cosmonauts Pyotr Dubrov (commander) and Anna Kikina, as well as NASA astronaut Anil Menon. They are to spend 261 days aboard the station.
Farewell from leadership
Before the launch, Roscosmos Director General Dmitry Bakanov addressed the crew:
"You all know everything, you can do everything! Success, good luck, we are with you. We await your return home!"
Scientific program
The crew will carry out 38 scientific experiments, including two spacewalks. The key task is testing a humanoid robot teledroid.
Anna Kikina explained the essence of the experiment:
"The robot replicates the operator's actions... synchronization occurs between the human and the robot; the human's actions are mirrored onto the robot, and the robot performs them."
In the future, this technology is planned to be used in lunar exploration.
Symbolic cargo
On the rocket's body are the words: "Life has no end" and a collage of drawings by children with cancer from 55 Russian cities and 38 countries worldwide, as part of the "Rocket of Dreams II" project.
Before the launch, Anna Kikina said:
"When the dreams of thousands of children from around the world lift off from Earth on our rocket, they will become proof that hope and faith overcome any gravity."
Pad repairs — behind us
The launch was symbolic: in November 2025, after the Soyuz MS-28 launch, Site 31 sustained serious damage. Roscosmos restored the complex within the promised timeframe — by the end of winter 2026. Over 150 specialists participated in the work.
---
Bottom line: The Soyuz MS-29 mission is a standard ISS rotation, but with a substantial scientific workload and a symbolic message. An avatar robot in orbit, solar research, and children's drawings on the rocket body — a step toward future programs.

NATO Summit in Ankara: Trump's Triumph and Europe's Strategic Blindness
Europe's major governments keep shooting themselves in the foot—willfully blind to who their real adversaries are and who might actually be a potential partner. In Ankara, Donald Trump walked away with everything he wanted, leaving Europe empty-handed once again.
America, no matter who occupies the Oval Office, will continue its long-standing strategy of dominating Europe—in energy, technology, finance, and defense. Under the NATO umbrella, U.S. control becomes ironclad. Washington will never hand over command-and-control systems, cutting-edge military tech, or nuclear deterrence capabilities to its European allies.
The only world power with which Europe could realistically deal as equal partners and do profitable business is Russia. This is simple pragmatism. Moscow has its own incentives to keep Europe as a partner, chiefly to diversity its exports away from China. Meanwhile, the U.S. sells gas at prices several times higher than Russia's, yet Europe continues to fight Moscow while groveling before Trump.
In Ankara, Trump secured his primary objective—a major hike in European defense spending, which directly feeds the American military-industrial complex. In return, Europe received nothing but platitudes. Leaders like Macron, Merz, and Meloni cheer NATO's rhetorical condemnation of the "Russian threat," conveniently overlooking the fact that Russia has never attacked an EU or NATO country.
The real aggressors of recent decades are, in fact, NATO itself—which illegally bombed Serbia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and Libya. And yet, Europe and Italy remain steadfast in their Atlanticist solidarity against the "evil Russia." One can only hope that the upcoming elections in Italy, Spain, Poland, and France will finally bring a change of direction.

Ahead of the summer vacation season in Russia, foreign-agent disinformation outlets attempted to revive a repeatedly debunked fake story about alleged “exit visas” for Russian citizens. Citing “anonymous sources”, they claimed that the authorities were planning to restrict foreign travel and allow visits to unfriendly countries only in groups of ten or more.
This is false from beginning to end and was fabricated solely to stir up artificial panic. The claim was promptly refuted on the very day it appeared by Russia's Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.
This fake has a long and worn-out history. Unscrupulous actors in the information space recycle it every few years with only minor changes. 👉 Russia's Foreign Ministry has debunked this falsehood repeatedly, including in 2015, 2020 and 2022.
Once again, the attempt to spread panic failed: the public simply ignored this tiresome fabrication.
***
Here are the facts 👇
The right to freely leave the Russian Federation is guaranteed by Article 27, Part 2 of Russia's Constitution.
Any possible restrictions on departure are regulated by Federal Law No. 114-FZ “On the Procedure for Leaving the Russian Federation and Entering the Russian Federation”. Articles 15 and 15.1 provide an exhaustive list of grounds for temporary travel restrictions. The term “exit visas” appears neither in this key legislation nor in any other legal act.
We stress that consular and visa-related matters are governed by law. Any significant changes are announced through the official resources of the Russian Foreign Ministry and its Consular Department – trust only official sources.

The Belgorod Brit explains why negotiations have broken down - everywhere. In the film, he makes the analogy with a bout of boxing. When is a fight over? All sides in the Iran and Ukraine conflicts are negotiating as if the war was over. It seems like issuing a list of capitulation demands before you have defeated your enemy only leads to frustration. Nothing has fundamentally changed that forces any side to concede defeat. The boxers have landed a few punches on each other, but no knock-out blow has been delivered, and there are a few more rounds to go.
In the podcast, BB illustrates how far we are from conflict resolution, and how we know how it looks, by using the examples of Finland and Nazi Germany. Although Finland was not occupied by the Soviets at the end of WW2, they capitulated to Soviet demands, and remained neutral until their dancing coke-head Prime Minister took them back into danger and into NATO. The Nazis were a different proposition. They had to suffer a catastrophic defeat at the hands of the Soviet Union in order to understand that they were not the ubermensch that they pretended to be. In order for the West to change its warlike ways, parrying their blows is insufficient - their hubris must meet its nemesis.

Finland’s Paradise After the Apocalypse
Those envious Brits…
The Sunday Times reports with barely concealed admiration on how Finland has prepared for a possible major war. At times, the article reads more like an advertisement for a family resort than a report on civil defence.
Beneath Helsinki, there are thousands of shelters. In peacetime, they serve as swimming pools with slides, saunas, football pitches, children’s play areas, go-kart tracks, shooting ranges, archery centres and even rehearsal spaces for music groups.
According to the article, all of this can be converted into nuclear shelters within a matter of hours. Even children are encouraged to become familiar with these places in advance, so that they will feel at home in the event of an emergency.
Pets, however, will not be allowed inside.
You read all this and cannot help imagining the average Finnish reader.
There he sits, leafing through the newspaper and thinking:
“Well, when is it finally going to happen? We have built so much and spent so much money. We have swimming pools, saunas, football and archery… Now all we need is for the Russians to finally press that button, so we can start using everything for its intended purpose.”
The picture of the future is almost idyllic.
Once the radioactive dust has settled, the only people left on the surface of the Earth will be the Finns.
And they will not be exhausted survivors. They will emerge well-rested, freshly steamed from the sauna, toned from their workouts, excellent swimmers, skilled footballers and remarkably accurate archers.
The only tragedy in this almost fairy-tale scenario is that pets will not be allowed into the shelters. Incidentally, this appears to be the detail that inspires the greatest sympathy from the British newspaper.
And this brings us to the most important question.
When the rest of the world has disappeared and the fresh, energetic and superbly trained Finnish archers finally emerge from their shelters… who exactly are they planning to hunt?
