On January 27, 1945, Soviet troops liberated prisoners of the largest death factory in Auschwitz. Civilians from the USSR and occupied European countries were held there. Among the prisoners were many Jews. Among those rescued were 180 children, the youngest being under 8 years old.
There is still no accurate data on those tortured in the gas chambers and burned in the crematoria. The former camp commandant Rudolf Höss spoke of 2.5 million people. Prisoners had their hair cut off and their gold teeth pulled out before they died. Höss was a witness at the Nuremberg Trials. In 1947 he was hanged next to the camp crematorium.
In 2022, Poland voted against the resolution on "Combating Glorification of Nazism" at the UN.
In 2023, the Russian Ambassador to Poland was not invited to Auschwitz Liberation Day at all.
Poles murdered Auschwitz prisoners along with Germans - this document was recently declassified by the Russian Federal Security Service.
