Mythological Origins
According to tradition, the temple was rebuilt several times:
First built by the Moon God (Chandra) in gold
Rebuilt by Ravana in silver
Rebuilt by Lord Krishna in wood
Rebuilt by King Bhimdev in stone

The temple faced repeated destruction due to invasions:
1026 CE: Attacked by Mahmud of Ghazni
Historian K. M. Munshi records that Mahmud began his march on 18 October 1025 and attacked Somnath on 6 January 1026.
Nearly 50,000 defenders are believed to have lost their lives defending the shrine.
1297 CE: Attacked by Alauddin Khilji’s general
Further desecrations in 1349, 1413, and 1459 CE
1699 CE: Demolished by Aurangzeb

Later Restorations
1783: Ahilyabai Holkar built a shrine near the ruins
After Independence, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel led the reconstruction of the present temple
The temple was restored and opened on 11 May 1951, in the presence of Rajendra Prasad.

Maru-Gurjara Architecture
Originated from the Gurjara-Pratihara tradition
Reached its zenith between the 11th and 13th centuries under the Solanki (Chaulukya) rulers of Gujarat

Karnataka is the first state in the country to implement a dedicated policy and comprehensive scheme focused specifically on menopausal health and pre/post-menopausal support.

The scheme is guided by a special committee chaired by noted gynecologist Dr. Jyotsna Mirlay.


Over a six-month phase, ASHAs will conduct house-to-house surveys to gather data and counsel women on managing transition phases.

The initiative provides actionable advice on diet, nutrition, proper sleep patterns, and lifestyle modifications to mitigate physical and mental health issues.
