Spaces around the main structure were renovated into open-air exhibition halls. The temple now looks like a museum of Chinese architectural history, or a rural architecture classroom. The relic is revived. Its value is manifested. Its charm will since endure.
For architects, the design in the field of cultural relics’ protection has always been conservative. At the same time we also opposed radicals ideas but would not give up the exploration of new innovations in the existing environment as well as producing new ideas to conserve the cultural relics in present context. The sustenance of a cultural relic cannot simply rely on a singular village, but also the support of tourism, and special outreach to the public. The project of the environmental improvement of the Five Dragons Temple is a new exploration in cultural relics environmental design. It break the usual conservative approach and uses a spatial sequence of etiquette to accentuate the history, rather than using the sense of history to highlight its “originality”. Frankly speaking, the spatial sequence did not derive from the original path of worship, but instead is a route for narrative for the present day. The narration first directs the respect towards the cultural relics, thus awakening the culture and customs of the locals in which are difficult to find nowadays in remote villages. By doing so, it integrates into the present village lives the missing pieces of folk culture that has been passed down since ancient times.

Custom Bamboo Skylight Illuminates the Interior of a Historic Building in China
Architects: Atelier Archmixing
Location: Fuchunjiang, Zhejiang, China
Year: 2014
Size: 464 m2
Team: TANG Yu, YAO Wenxuan, JIANG Zhuoxi, HUANG Limin, YANG Yuqiong, LU Jinshuo, LIANG Bo
Corporacion: Shanghai Yuangui Architectural Structure Co.Ltd
Prize: THE BUNDS’ ‘Best New Hotel of the Year’of the 6th Best Design Hotel
In response to the overwhelming growth of cities and neighborhoods in China, architects from Atelier Archmixing’s Shanghai office, have developed a series of proposals that seek to return value to sensitive interior spaces and improve the user’s quality of life through design.
The project consists of an interesting light fixture; a bamboo structure similar in shape to an umbrella, that lets natural light and fresh air into the building.
This Zou ma lou is a typical Chinese Huizhou courtyard house sitting near a dock ,the client want to turn this old vernacular residence into a reception hall equipped with a gallery bar , upgrading its residential quality.
The two-story house is of modest size, while the enclosed courtyard is rather spacious and decent, surrounded with richly carved wood beams. To make best use of this spatial and decoration feature, a fantastic transparent umbrella structure is employed to shelter the center yard, where people cannow relax on sofas without worrying about the changing weather.
This is an independent bamboo structure covered with Polyurethane films, part of which can be opened to receive the sunlight and fresh air. This technical intervention successfully solved all challenges including air conditioning, rain collecting, daylighting and ventilation.
Through this project, we highlight our design philosophy that historical buildings should be put into everyday use instead of being adored as a shrine. Only in this way, they can achieve their full value with building emotional connections with the contemporary users.
The technical intervention solves all the challenges posed by the client, including air conditioning, rainwater capture, daylight and ventilation. The installation revitalises a historic building of great spatial and architectural value and strengthens its liveability qualities.

Shangwei Village Plugin House / People's Architecture Office
• Architects: People's Architecture Office
• Location: Shenzhen, China
• Principal: Zhe He, James Shen, Feng Zang
• Design Team: Jinghai Sha, Mingkai Lin
• Client: Guanhu Subdistrict / FuturePlus Academy
• Project Year: 2018
• Manufacturers: 吉祥, 立邦
Huang Family Plugin House Size: 15sqm
Fang Family Plugin House Size: 20sqm
The Shangwei Plugin Houses are renovated houses that are hundreds of years old, left vacant and in ruins for decades as Shangwei Village suffered from heavy disinvestment.
The rapid urban expansion of nearby Shenzhen engulfed villages like Shangwei, turning them into urban villages, or rural islands surrounded by a sea of new development. Half of the properties in Shangwei lay abandoned as villagers fled in search of higher standards of living in neighboring areas.
The local government, the Shangwei Village Cooperative, was interested in exploring creative ways to rehabilitate and support a budding community of local artists and craftsmen that has recently taken root. The government, with the support of the Leping Foundation and Future Plus (a local non-profit), initiated a pilot in partnership with People’s Architecture Office. The village government is legally bound to renovate uninhabitable properties where the roofs have collapsed. However, such properties are difficult to renovate because any work would affect adjacent structures. To circumvent this problem, the Plugin House leaves the original structure untouched while a new structure is built inside the existing house.
The Plugin House uses a modular building system of prefabricated panels. Structural connections are integrated into each panel so that a Plugin House can be built with unskilled labor using one tool in less than a day. Industrial manufacturing allows the use of high quality materials that drastically increase energy efficiency and economies of scale ensure the Plugin House remains inexpensive.
Although the Plugin Panels are mass produced, each Plugin House is customized to fit its particular site. The Huang Family Plugin House fits into a tiny 15sqm space. Because part of the original roof still remains, the Plugin House insertion acts as structural reinforcement and as a protective measure against any structural issues the original house may have. To add additional space, the bedroom is placed on a mezzanine level with a corner window that cantilevers over a collapsed wall, offering a panoramic view of the village roofline. A skylight is placed where the original roof has collapsed, inviting natural light into the deep lot. The Fang Family Plugin House is slightly larger at 20sqm. The house features a clerestory window to bring southern light into the bedroom area at the rear of the house. For both locations, the Plugin House System raises living standards by adding efficient mini-split units for heating and cooling, modern kitchens, and off-the-grid composting toilet systems.

The purpose of historical cultural village protection is for its better development. It confronts the strict control guidelines of the local and traditional features but still needs to meet the requirements of new programs. The development of the countryside not only needs to face the natural environment and traditional context, but also needs to create a high-quality space that meets the needs of modern life. line+ studio attempts to combine traditional craftsmanship with industrial prefabrication in this rural transformation project. The light steel structure equips the modern space with a lightweight skeleton and at the same time the traditional rammed earth walls feature it with local characteristics. At the same time, the materials are collected locally, and the old materials are recycled and reused to realize the unity of opposites between “new and old, heavy and light, real and virtual”.

Under the background of industrial upgrading and transformation, some factories in Shenzhen and the Pearl River Delta region were relocated to land and areas with lower costs in various aspects, leaving many vacant industrial plants. The architect team hopes to use the biennial exhibition venue to present the opportunity of turning the abandoned factory into an art and culture generator. They reserved a step theater for artistic communication, sharing, and movie viewing. Another wish that the architects and curators are still planning is to be able to do a modern dance performance, a poetry recital, or a musical performance in this factory building-to be able to intervene in a huge industrial scale through light art, Under the instillation of the sky, a response was formed in the empty echo; through a dialogue with the city's once rapid industrialized past, a vision for the future culture and art of the city was constructed.

The exhibition halls of the Cultural Museum is composed of three kinds of individual spaces with water patio, thematically ranging from the “Contemporary” to the “Traditional”, and from the “Traditional” to the “Future”. Due to the serious destruction of the Zhang Family’s house, only the exterior wall is intriguing and therefore preserved, inside which the“Contemporary”exhibition hall is built with an offset of 30cm to show the respect toward the old construction. In comparison, the Village History Hall is well preserved. Its internal wooden load-bearing structure repaired, partition walls removed, the original atrium preserved, the Hall witness the unfolding of a second exhibition space with a theme of "Tradition". Under the research on the Village History Hall, it is determined that there had been another building to its north. Therefore, the third, "Future" exhibition hall is built from the renewal of the original site, as well as a water patio and leisure zone in vacant area.
Around the new buildings, the shadow changes with the light. The sunshine is filtered by the trees and scattered in the yard, lively and warm. Along with the breezes, these details of light forms a range of subtle perceptions. Around the old buildings, be it the mottled wall, a grey masonry brick, a tile at the top of the wall, some grass that moves with the wind, or a crawling insect, there is always moment in space that brings one back to a moment in time.

3 stories old house on the Xihu lakeside was renovated to 2 types of Japanese Restaurant. We planned traditional Japanese restaurant on the second and third floor which has calm atmosphere.
The entrance of restaurant is planned on the second floor where it has low ceiling height, so it is very important to design the walls as eye-catching ones. For the entrance wall, we disassembled the traditional ASANOHA pattern to two different geometric layers, one layer has diamond pattern and the another has the equilateral triangle pattern. In front of the wall we can recognize it as ASANOHA, but it gradually shifts toward the periphery. On the shoe box panels, they were carved by Japanese traditional technique called as NAGURI, and it had the beautiful shaded expression,
On half of the second floor, there planned private rooms in which the both side of partition was put by washi paper called as TAIKO-BARI. On the other half of the second-floor, there planned dining hall in which the double ASANOHA pattern on the back wall of the tables. At the openings, to keep the daylight and block the realistic scenery of the outside, also feel the greens on the balconies, we used the bottom opened washi partition called as YUKIMI-SHOJI.
On the third floor, there planned VIP rooms of calm atmosphere. For using enough height of attic, we expanded the set of staggered shelves called as CHIGAI-DANA up to the ceiling, and put the indirect lighting on them. This technique is reference of KASUMI-DANA at SHUGAKUIN imperial villa in Kyoto.
Matsuko Fast Food
Many tourists are usually walking around there, so that on the first floor we planned the fast food style which provides low price and keeps high rotation.
Because on the first floor of this old house its ceiling height is very low, so we can’t change the height too much. Also due to satisfy the requested programs, the shape of the space is very irregular so that it’s difficult to attract the tourist around there. Then we referred to “HUNAZOKO” ceiling that means bottom of the ship, which is usually used in the traditional Japanese house. The center line of the ceiling being raised up only a little, we can feel the extent of the space even if it’s very low ceiling height. In addition, using wide wooden colored ceiling panel alternately up and down, the tops of ceiling were connected from entrance to back of the space drawing a curve. On the wall where ceiling panels end, they directly fall down with keeping its strip design.
In Japan, the narrow and long room is called as “eel’s bed room”. Later this restaurant started to provide eel food, so this space design like a “eel’s bed room” matched with the provided food unexpectedly.

Oil Workshop / DnA
• Architects: DnA
• Area: 920 m²
• Year: 2018
• Architect In Charge: Tiantian Xu
• Lighting Design:Zhang Xin Studio, Architecture Department of Tsinghua University
• Client: People's Government of Dadong Ba Town, Songyang County
• City: Lishui, China
•
• Hengzhang Village is located in Dadongba Town, Songyang County. The village has a long history and preserves lots of cultural relics and historical sites. The old oil workshop at the village entrance was built over one hundred years ago.
• This traditional wooden structure & rammed-earth wall building sits on a sunken site next to a creek, houses a water-powered trip-hammer, two sets of wooden oil expeller, a corner kitchen and a mezzanine lounge. The Workshop also served as a shared milling facility for villagers but has been abandoned for decades.
• In October 2017, an extension plan has been programmed to reutilize the oil workshop as production and leisure space for both the village community and tourists, and also as an ar-chitectural acupuncture strategy to revitalize this traditional village.
• The extension started by preserving the main building and the interior wooden machinery. The program also expanded out to a kitchen and a packing space on the side, and a leisure pavilion with viewing platform by the creek.
• These new additions are traditional “Mortise and Tenon” wooden structure, and wrapped by masonry walls to create a continuous landscape with the terrace fields and the creek.
• The articulation of roof system not only creates a roof-scape of different functions, but also introduces natural light into each space. The construction is done by local building material and technique. This allows building to fit with both context and limited acupunctural budget.

Right now, the six-inch screen we're holding in our hands has completely reshaped the way we perceive the world, taking us away from concentration and contemplation with its abbreviated images, fragmented messages, and real-time communications. In this era of the bowed generation, a huge screen hanging overhead may temporarily cure contem-porary people's distraction or cervical spondylosis, recovering the tranquility and curiosi-ty of the ancients when they looking up at the starry night.
