P.S. Speaking of the Avatar Welcome Pack, one of the creator participants Meshbody has just announced a major update that will be of interest to other creators who want to build content for the Legacy bodies. Meshbody recently unveiled The Studio, a vibrant creator hub on Discord that centralizes Legacy’s development kits, documentation, tools, and support resources. To champion this community-driven effort, Meshbody has eliminated the application process entirely for accessing its Legacy Kits and Tools. To dive in, head to the Meshbody region in-world, navigate to The Studio area, and click JOIN. Once you link your Second Life account, you'll unlock full access to all Legacy creator tools right away.

How long have you been in Second Life, and how did you first hear about it?
I’ve been in SL since November 2006. I joined so that I could find a virtual NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) writing group I’d heard was being hosted there. I was quite timid about it all in the first instance, however, and spent nearly two weeks on help island before becoming brave enough to venture onto the main grid - so I never did find that group that year. SL took a while to click for me - probably because of my timidness - and I abandoned that account after a few weeks. But then, in March 2007, I decided to have another stab at it and created my present account - and have never looked back since!
You’ve created some iconic and award-winning machinima such as STÖMOL and WAARHEID. What originally drew you to filmmaking in Second Life?
There was no single factor, really. I enjoy creating stories and have written several novels set in or around Second Life, and one thing I’d noted back then was that SL machinima tended to focus more on conveying mood and emotion rather than linear storytelling. They looked great, I should add, but I felt there was room within the medium for traditional storytelling also. So there was that. Also, I’d had a fantasy since my childhood that one day I would be able to create my own movie on a computer: it wasn’t any sort of burning ambition, but it was there in the back of my mind, just the same. Second Life impressed me from the start as a platform which might be used for movie making, but to begin with, it didn’t feel visually impressive enough - and when the graphics did improve (and boy did they improve), I didn’t have a computer capable of running ultra graphics mode at a good enough frame rate for video. But I used that time to work on my SL photography skills. Finally, I had the machine I needed plus the photography skills to get going. STÖMOL started out as a fun little project through which I would teach myself filming skills, but in the end grew into a full sci-fi feature.
How has your storytelling evolved from those earlier films to your upcoming work?
There are some things which are the same. I’m still a fan of movies with stillness in them. I find stillness to be immersive, and I don’t especially appreciate the rapid cuts which characterise a lot of modern cinema (I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with this, just that it doesn’t especially appeal to me). So my films tend to have a lot of stillness in them: this has drawn a small number of critical comments over the years, but I’m pretty unrepentant about that since it’s what I’m aiming for anyway.
What’s changed is my repertoire of technical skills when it comes to the business of creating machinima. I’ve become more skilled, for example, in synchronising lip movement to recorded speech: this might sound like a small thing, but it’s made me more confident about including dialogue in my films, and that means that I’m more inclined now to include longer dialogue scenes.
What can you share about the story and creative process behind your new machinima series, Hotel Victoria? And where and when can Residents watch it?
Hotel Victoria grew out of a news story I heard during the first UK COVID-19 lockdown, about a hotel site manager staying all by himself in the hotel he worked in, keeping it in good condition, ready for when the restrictions got lifted. As the context for a story, this captivated me, and originally, I was thinking about using it for a novel. But I mentioned it one day to Marina Münter, and she told me she thought it would be a good premise for a machinima. Once that idea took root, I couldn’t shake it! There was another story premise I’d been rolling around in my head for a few years, and I realised that this could fit within the hotel premise nicely. So then it was just a question of creating it.

There was another story premise I’d been rolling around in my head for a few years, and I realised that this could fit within the hotel premise nicely. So then it was just a question of creating it.
My previous machinima projects were both feature length movies - an hour and fifteen minutes for STÖMOL and around an hour and a half for WAARHEID - and I decided I wanted to try something different for Hotel Victoria. This project, then, is a serialised show, each episode between 15 and 20 minutes long. I’m interested to see what this does for my viewing figures (because - frankly - sitting down to watch a 75 minute or 90 minute YouTube video is a big ask on time these days), but it also presented a new challenge in terms of structure: each episode has to have its own beginning, middle and ending. It’s been a lot of fun working that out.
I’ve planned the series to span two seasons, each four episodes long. They’ll be released on YouTube, with episode one dropping on Tuesday, 2 December and a new episode each week thereafter (so 9, 16 and 23 December). I’m hoping I can hit the same month next year for season 2 - though no promises!
Episode one will, of course, be a big moment for me and my co-producer, Caitlin Tobias, so we’ve planned a watch party inworld, which anyone can attend. That will take place on Tuesday 2 December at 12pm (i.e., 12 noon) at the Nancy Redgrave Building. The episode will premiere at 12:15pm on YouTube (episode link), so we’ll watch that together and then answer questions or just chat once the episode has ‘aired.’
I’ll add here a note of thanks to the people I’ve worked with on this project. Cait’s contribution, of course, goes way beyond the easily measurable (as well as co-producing, she also puppeteered avatars for most of the main characters and voices a main character). There are also a number of other people who have contributed their voices to the series: AvaJean Westland, Boudicca Amat, G J Hicks, Graeme Young, Lydia Lindeman, Persephone Phoenix and Sammie Westland.
You’ve mentioned that sound design plays an important role in your machinima. How do you approach that aspect of production?
Sound is incredibly important, yes. It transforms a scene into something way more real and immersive. For my two previous films, I used mostly ‘off-the-shelf’ sound effects from the internet (mostly from freesound.org, which is an amazing resource if you’re getting started out). This time round, almost all of the foley is bespoke, created either by myself or by Count Wavnstein - who is an SL resident with fantastic sound engineering skills.

You’ve built all the sets for Hotel Victoria yourself. What was that experience like compared to collaborating with others on your previous films?
If I had to summarise in a single word the biggest difference between Hotel Victoria and my previous machinima work, it would probably be ‘bespoke.’ As I mentioned just now, the sound effects are almost all bespoke. And - yes - all the sets are bespoke also. One of the challenges with creating machinima using the many regions and installations put together by other SL residents - amazing though these places (and their creators) are - is that you’re then tied to that region’s timescale. Some of these places exist only for a month or so - some for only a few days - and that means you’re under pressure to get filming done there as quickly as possible. I wanted to be able to take more time over Hotel Victoria, and I also wanted to have more control over the way it looked. So I started building the hotel in February 2023 and spent over a year getting that right before I commenced filming. There’s just one exterior location used in the series (Mitsumi-Town in Tokyo by Eripom Moonwall), but everything else was put together by me. That includes the hotel building itself and items of set dressing from over 130 Second Life creators.

This time round, then, all avatars are controlled either by me or by Cait. Cait and I have been filming together since STÖMOL, so she knows exactly how I work and what I’m after.
Really, I’m just a lazy film maker who prefers to do as much as possible by myself, without having to rely on too many other people. Collaboration is hard work!

What does the creative community in Second Life mean to you, and how has it influenced your work over the years?
The honest truth is I don’t engage much any more with creative groups in SL, much as I respect them and their importance: I’m a bit of a recluse in SL and tend to spend most of my time working on my projects. Machinima is hugely time-consuming, and I only get around a couple of hours a day in SL on weekdays, so I try to use that time as efficiently as possible, and I learn best through encountering problems and figuring out ways to solve or get around them.
That said, in my earlier years in SL, the lit community was of huge importance to me, and I still maintain a link of sorts with that. Alongside Hotel Victoria, I’m currently working with Persephone Phoenix on editing the third volume of printed poetry to come out of the Blue Angel, SL’s longest running open mic poetry event (it will hit 20 years next year). So creative communities in SL are incredibly important, and I don’t recommend that others follow my anti-social example!

What advice would you give to aspiring filmmakers or storytellers in Second Life who want to bring their ideas to life?
I’ve made a series of tutorials on my blog for first time machinimists: Huck’s guide to making machinima in Second Life, but, in all honesty, the way I learn is not by reading tutorials beforehand but to get stuck in and have a go - and then, when I encounter a problem, work out how to solve it by researching it online (or just trying to lateral-think my way around it).

Where can people see your work? Please share links to your sites and social media accounts.
The best place to check out is my website: huckleberryhax.wordpress.com. The details of all of my work are there, including my virtual world novels and short stories.
I like to post occasionally on BlueSky. Any news about my projects will always be posted there.
If people would like to support my work, they can become a Patreon subscriber. I only have a few subscribers at the moment, but still, they’ve made a big difference. Where STÖMOL and WAARHEID were created on pretty much a zero budget, Hotel Victoria cost money to make - the main cost being the purchase of furniture and props - over 130 different SL creators, as I mentioned earlier - and the money I get from my subscribers really helped with that. For just $1.50 per month, you’ll get access to special edition PDF versions of all my books (with handwritten notes inside them), and for $3 a month, you’ll also get a behind-the-scenes video from me every two months.
For an in-depth look at Hotel Victoria and Huck’s creative process, watch this video interview with him on Caitlin Tobias’ Pixel Talk series. They chat in the hotel lobby set about how the idea began, how the build and characters evolved, and what it takes to bring this new machinima series to life in Second Life.
Thank you, Huck, for sharing your creativity, craft, and dedication. Your films and writing continue to inspire Residents across the grid.

Announcing the SLua Open Beta: Modern Scripting Comes to Second Life
https://community.secondlife.com/news/featured-news/announcing-the-slua-open-beta-modern-scripting-comes-to-second-life-r11237/
Today marks an exciting milestone for Second Life creators: SLua, our modern scripting language built on Luau (Roblox's Lua variant), is now available in open beta on the production grid!
What is SLua?
SLua brings modern programming language features to Second Life while maintaining full compatibility with your existing LSL knowledge. Built on Lua: a language used by millions of developers worldwide. SLua offers faster execution, ~50% less memory consumption than LSL/Mono, and powerful new capabilities that make complex scripts easier to write and maintain.
Key Features and Improvements

Modern Language Features
Tables: SLua's most powerful data structure works as both arrays (like LSL lists) and dictionaries/maps. No more managing parallel lists—you finally have native key-value storage in Second Life. Dynamic Event Handling: Register multiple event handlers at runtime with the new LLEvents system. No more state machinery—just clean, focused callbacks:
Multiple Timers: Need more than one timer? LLTimers lets you create multiple independent timers with different intervals—all with built-in lag protection:
Coroutines: Write elegant asynchronous code for complex multi-step operations without callback hell. Native JSON Support: Built-in JSON encoding and decoding with lljson.encode() and lljson.decode() makes web integration straightforward. Optional Type Safety: Add type annotations where you need them for better error catching, or skip them for rapid prototyping.
Developer-Friendly Syntax
If you know Lua, Python, or JavaScript, SLua will feel familiar, and if you're coming from LSL, you'll appreciate the cleaner syntax:
Important Beta Caveats
This is a beta release, and we want to be clear about what that means:

Today marks an exciting milestone for Second Life creators: SLua, our modern scripting language built on Luau (Roblox's Lua variant), is now available in open beta on the production grid!
What is SLua?
SLua brings modern programming language features to Second Life while maintaining full compatibility with your existing LSL knowledge. Built on Lua: a language used by millions of developers worldwide. SLua offers faster execution, ~50% less memory consumption than LSL/Mono, and powerful new capabilities that make complex scripts easier to write and maintain.
Key Features and Improvements
Faster execution compared to LSL/Mono
~50% less memory usage
Modern language features
Data structures and tables
Dynamic event subscription
Multiple event handlers in a single script
Coroutines
Multiple timers

Getting Started
For Creators and Scripters
Download the SLua Project Viewer
Get it at releasenotes.secondlife.com/viewer.html
Install the Official VSCode Plugin (Recommended)
Our new official scripting plugin provides syntax highlighting, preprocessing, Lua require inclusion, error tracking, object chat and debug output tracking in the IDE, automatic language updates, and more. Download it from GitHub. It will be available on the VSCode Extension Marketplace soon.
Visit SLua Beta Regions
SLua scripts can be created, edited, and tested on regions designated as "SLua Beta" regions.
Just want to visit?
If you’re curious to experience SLua-powered content, you can use your regular viewer: no changes needed.
Resources and Community
Documentation: Comprehensive scripting documentation is now available at our new work-in-progress creator portal: create.secondlife.com
Community: Join us on Discord at discord.com/invite/secondlifeofficial in the #scripting-lua channel
Editing: Linden Lab has an official open source VSCode extension that can be found at https://github.com/secondlife/sl-vscode-plugin
Official Scripting Extension for VSCode
For those that prefer editing with an external editor we also have an extension for VSCode which you may download here: https://github.com/secondlife/sl-vscode-plugin/releases
⚠️ The API is subject to change. Content you create now may need updates as we refine the language based on your feedback. This is an active development beta—expect changes.
⚠️ SLua scripts will ONLY run in SLua Beta regions. They will not execute in standard regions. Your existing LSL scripts continue to work everywhere as always.
⚠️ SLua content on the Marketplace. To avoid unhappy customers, we advise waiting until SLua has launched grid wide before listing SLua content on the Marketplace.
What's Next?
As SLua stabilizes based on beta feedback, we'll expand availability and continue building out the creator portal with tutorials, examples, and migration guides. The VSCode extension will arrive on the official VSCode and Open VSX marketplaces soon, making setup even easier.

Second Life Spotlight - Grazia Horwitz
https://community.secondlife.com/news/featured-news/second-life-spotlight-grazia-horwitz-r11238/
Today, we’re shining a spotlight on Grazia Horwitz, one of Second Life’s earliest fashion bloggers whose timeless style, thoughtful writing, and enduring presence have inspired the virtual fashion community for nearly two decades.
How long have you been in Second Life, and how did you first hear about it?
I remember the first time I rezzed in world on 15 September 2006. Second Life was everywhere in the news. Anshe Chung had just become the first SL to RL millionaire, and because she was based in Germany, the story received a lot of attention in European media. It made the idea of virtual worlds feel real and full of potential, so I decided to try it myself.
When I arrived, everything felt strange and exciting. The world looked simple, but the energy was incredible. People were building, designing, and experimenting with ideas that didn’t fit anywhere else. You could feel the creativity everywhere.
I was fascinated by how much was possible. Every place I visited showed another layer of imagination, from handmade homes to small boutiques, art builds, and detailed landscapes. It wasn’t just a platform. It was a place where people expressed themselves and connected through what they created.
That sense of possibility has kept me here ever since. Even now, I am still amazed by what residents build and how Second Life continues to grow through their creativity.
You’ve been part of the Second Life fashion world for many years, with your blog and Flickr inspiring countless Residents. What first inspired you to start fashion blogging in Second Life?
I tried building for a while and spent hours at the Ivory Tower, determined to get past that first plywood box and the basic shapes in the edit menu. It didn’t take long to realise that creating wasn’t my path. Still, I wanted to stay close to the community in a way that felt meaningful.
I have always loved fashion, so when Celebrity Trollop posted on the Second Style blog looking for contributors, I applied. She gave me a chance, and I will always be grateful for that. It opened the door to a part of SL that helped me find my place and my voice.
You’ve witnessed so many eras of Second Life fashion. What do you remember most about the early days of blogging, and how have you seen the fashion community evolve over the years?
Everything felt new and full of energy. There was no mesh yet. Flexi prims had just arrived in May 2006. We had no Windlight or shadows. By today’s standards, SL looked simple, but the creativity was unmatched. Designers built incredible things with prims, and dresses and hair moved wildly in clubs.
Many still remember waiting at the edge of the Last Call sim for Ginny Talamasca’s next release. Residents chatted, compared outfits, and shared the anticipation. And then there were the Japanese Stamp Rallies. You would teleport from store to store, collect stamps with each purchase, and trade in a full card for exclusive rewards. The lag was terrible, but everyone had fun.
Blogging felt just as alive. There were only a few of us, but we shared what we genuinely loved. Sasy Scarborough, Gogo, Willow Zander, Catero Revolution, Ana Lutetia, and of course Celebrity Trollop shaped that first generation. They didn’t only take pictures. They reviewed new items, gave feedback, and helped designers grow. It was a tight community built on enthusiasm.
Today the fashion scene is more polished, but also more transactional. The photography is stunning, but the storytelling often gets lost. I miss when bloggers wrote about what they wore and built a persona. Many posts now focus only on sponsored items and skip the pieces chosen out of personal love.
The creativity is still strong, but the spark of those early years was unique and I miss that in the current scene.

You have such a distinct visual style. Can you share a bit about your creative process when styling and photographing your looks?
I think I am the least visionary blogger in SL. My guide is my personal taste, which leans toward classic, elegant, and minimalist fashion. I don’t start with concepts. I follow instinct.
I put together an outfit, often mixing new items with things I have kept for years and rediscovered in my chaotic inventory. If the look feels right, I take photos. If I like the result, I write about it. I never edit my pictures for the blog. I prefer to share them as they come out.
Sometimes I write about a recipe, because cooking is one of my real life passions. Or I highlight a sim that impressed me with its design. It keeps the blog personal and connected to what I enjoy.
I stay independent as a blogger. A few creator friends, like LeLUTKA, TRUTH, Glam Affair, Mellow Elie, Thalia Heckroth and The Kiwi Co, share their work with me without any expectations. Everything else on Pixelapproved is bought by me. It keeps things honest and stress-free. I already have enough commitments in real life. In Second Life, I like to keep it simple and genuine.
Over the years, what kind of friendships or connections have you found through the SL fashion community, and what have they meant to you?
I have met some of my closest friends in Second Life. Some are still with me, and some have passed away in real life. Friendships here form through a person’s essence. You get to know their humour, thoughts, and kindness before anything else.
Making friends in real life is harder for me. I struggle with small talk, often lack the energy to meet people, and don’t feel very confident socially. In SL, those barriers don’t exist. My friends here have been some of the most genuine, smart, and fun people I know.
Some belong to the fashion community, but many don’t. That balance reminds me that SL is much bigger than that small fashion bubble.
Lately, I have been spending time at Aether Nightclub, built by my friends Lucius and Carmen Balfour. It is warm, welcoming, and full of life, especially for European time zones. The DJs know how to keep the crowd engaged. It is an adult club where some nudity or flirting happens, but the atmosphere stays respectful and lighthearted.
I also love the estate where I live, Le Chateau, owned by Victoire Sire and Francois Humbug. It spans several themed sims. I live in the Hamptons area by the Blake Sea. There is always something to do, like sailing, horseback riding, exploring, or just taking a walk. I recently started practicing my golf swing at the club, and it has become a small ritual I enjoy.
Some of my SL friendships have crossed into real life. Whether we still meet or merely stay in touch, they remain some of the most special people I know. They understand why SL matters to me, and I never have to explain it.
Are there any Residents whose work you particularly admire or who have inspired you along the way?
So many, far too many to list. I look at creators who built steady brands over more than a decade. Many started here as teenagers, and now they support their families with the work they built in this world. That kind of commitment stays with me.
Photographers and videographers inspire me daily. Their images, timing, and ideas push me to improve my own work.
I appreciate the estate owners and community builders who open their spaces to everyone. They host events, bring people together, and support real life charities. They show what SL can become when people care.
And I think of residents who carve out a corner of this world for themselves. They build friendships. They find their people. They show up when life gives them time. They all influence me, and they keep me logging in with the same energy I had years ago.

A Big Year of Progress for Second Life Mobile
https://community.secondlife.com/news/featured-news/a-big-year-of-progress-for-second-life-mobile-r11241/
As the year comes to a close, we’ve made great strides in making the Second Life Mobile fundamentally more reliable, feature rich, and fun than it was just twelve months ago. This year was about building real foundations: smoother rendering, faster performance, better avatars, and the core features people expect from a modern mobile app. The result is a Second Life Mobile experience that’s more capable, more stable, and far more inviting for both new and returning residents. We know that there’s more work to be done and we look forward to continuing this journey of improving Second Life mobile with you. A More Complete Mobile Experience One of the biggest milestones this year was making Second Life Mobile more self-sufficient. Early in 2025 we made it possible to create a Second Life account directly in the app, lowering the barrier to entry for new residents. Next we launched the Lobby, which provides a clear starting point, helping users orient themselves before jumping into the world, while the address bar makes navigating to specific locations faster and more intuitive. In the spring and summer, we introduced daily rewards and achievements, giving residents lightweight goals and incentives that feel natural on mobile, whether you’re checking in briefly or staying longer. For iOS users, in-app purchases are now supported, making it easier to top up your L$ balance directly from your phone. Sharper Visuals, Smarter Rendering Visual quality and rendering performance saw major upgrades throughout the year. Textures now load at variable resolutions based on device memory and object importance, significantly reducing memory use while improving clarity. Objects load in a smarter order—prioritizing larger and more important items—so scenes feel complete faster. Network draw distance has increased, and your own avatar now renders independently and can be visible up to 75 meters away. Additional rendering improvements include: Neutral gray placeholder textures replacing the old dark cloud pattern More compact mesh formats, reducing geometry memory usage by about 15% Initial support for particle effects, with more planned Fixes for incorrect culling, disappearing objects, and texture update issues We also added recurring integrity checks so objects can automatically recover when network data arrives late or out of order—making the world more resilient under real-world mobile conditions. Beautiful Avatars Avatars were a major focus this year, both for new users and experienced residents. The Creator Avatar Welcome Pack is now available directly in the mobile app, including creator-made welcome avatars. Residents can choose from predefined bodies and looks, then save favorites as outfits with a single tap—making it easy to get started or refresh your appearance on the go. Under the hood, avatar loading and silhouette handling were significantly improved. These changes result in smoother appearance updates and fewer cases where attachments or worn objects fail to render, especially in busy regions. Movement, Camera, and Voice Improvements Day-to-day interaction also became smoother and more intuitive. Movement and camera controls were refined to feel more natural on touch devices, making exploration and social interaction less frustrating and more fluid. This included a reset camera function, better zooming and panning, and first-person view. Voice support was added, bringing real-time conversation into the mobile experience and helping Second Life feel more alive wherever you are. Faster Performance, Better Stability Many of the most impactful changes this year are the ones you don’t see—but definitely feel. Asset downloads are now split across multiple connections to avoid bottlenecks, and failed downloads no longer jam the entire queue. Objects unload from memory more quickly,

Faster Performance, Better Stability Many of the most impactful changes this year are the ones you don’t see—but definitely feel. Asset downloads are now split across multiple connections to avoid bottlenecks, and failed downloads no longer jam the entire queue. Objects unload from memory more quickly,
invalid or recently deleted objects reload correctly, and memory fragmentation has been reduced through smarter pooling strategies. Additional improvements include: Moving infrequently used items into unmanaged memory for better efficiency A more assertive memory-management mode that works around overly conservative OS limits Fixes for multithreading issues that caused silent background failures Together, these changes make long sessions more stable and complex scenes far more reliable. Navigation, Teleporting, and Everyday Polish Teleporting and navigation are now more dependable, with proper support for SLURLs that include floating-point coordinates, improved teleport screen reliability, and temporary music suspension during teleports to avoid conflicts. Smaller quality-of-life fixes add up as well: advanced settings like Show Framerate and Show Loading Data now persist between sessions, background tasks no longer pause unnecessarily after teleports, and object rendering is more robust even when network packets arrive out of order. Growing Through Partnerships Beyond the app itself, this year also marked meaningful growth through marketing and creator partnerships. These collaborations helped bring new audiences into Second Life Mobile and ensured that new residents are greeted with high-quality, creator-made content from their very first session. Caption: 2025 saw the start of collaborative partnerships with MadPea, Ajuda Brasil, Alterscape Studios, Bad Unicorn & Arcback, and our own SL Studios. Looking Ahead This year was about making Second Life Mobile faster, more capable, and more welcoming—laying the groundwork for what comes next. With stronger rendering, better avatars, improved navigation, and core platform features now in place, we’re set up to continue expanding the experience in powerful ways. Thank you to everyone who explored, tested, and shared feedback along the way! Your input and dedication shaped these improvements, and we’re excited to keep building together in the year ahead. If you haven’t already, download the mobile app! We’d love to hear your feedback - report bugs or request features here.
