OpenAI to Build a 3.2-gigawatt Data Center in Georgia

Georgia Power, a subsidiary of Southern Co., has signed a 25-year agreement to supply electricity to a new 3.2-gigawatt data center for OpenAI. The facility, which is set to begin operations in 2028, will be located in Effingham County near Savannah, Georgia.

This project is a key addition to Southern Co.'s portfolio, which has seen its total contracted large power load grow to 17 GW since early 2026. To maintain grid reliability, the contract includes 1,000 megawatts of flexible demand response. This allows the utility to reduce power delivery to the site during periods of peak demand, a provision the company has not previously established with a data center customer.

The project represents an investment of $20 billion. Unlike typical industrial developments where local utilities must fund infrastructure upgrades, OpenAI has agreed to cover the full cost of the necessary electric work, which is intended to protect other customers from potential rate increases.

The facility can draw as much electricity as a small city, unless the grid needs it back.

Energy Vault signs 1.25GW power deal for Texas data center

On 7 August, Energy Vault signed a major agreement to deliver 1.25 GW of power infrastructure for an artificial intelligence data center in Texas, US 🚀

If you follow tech news, you know that running modern AI models requires staggering amounts of electricity. This project bypasses traditional power lines to deliver energy straight to the servers.

📍 The agreement will generate between $500 and $600 million in revenue during late 2026 and 2027.
📍 The setup includes battery storage systems, power conversion units, and dedicated control software.
📍 First deployments will launch within four to twelve months.
📍 Chief executive Robert Piconi called it the company's largest single contract to date.

By comparison, utility provider Evergy manages 3 GW of signed large-scale loads with a 5-GW generation pipeline, showing just how fast the entire energy market is expanding to keep up.

Power is the true bottleneck of the AI boom.

Google invests €13 billion in Finland for data centers

Google announced on Wednesday a massive investment of €13 billion in Finland to build new infrastructure and secure dedicated clean energy for artificial intelligence 🚀.

You need serious power to run modern AI models. Finland offers a cold climate that helps cool servers naturally and a stable electricity grid with low carbon emissions. The funding will build three brand-new facilities set for completion between 2027 and 2028:
▫️ Kajaani in northern Finland
▫️ Muhos for regional expansion
▫️ Vaala to support heavy computational loads

To keep these power-hungry servers running, Google signed a 22-year deal with the Finnish power company Fortum to buy half of the output from the Loviisa nuclear plant.

Ruth Porat, a top executive at Alphabet and Google, noted this is the company's first nuclear energy deal outside the United States. Other tech giants are making similar moves. Rivals like Microsoft and ByteDance have also established operations in the region, building on the path paved by Google's older Hamina center which opened inside a former paper mill back in 2009.

Nuclear power is becoming the ultimate backup for the digital age.
Clean energy is the new bottleneck for tech growth.
