Floating wind turbines at the University of Queensland get cheaper
Researchers at the University of Queensland have developed an engineering fix that reduces the cost of building floating wind turbines by 40% through a simple redesign of their geometric structure.
By using simpler shapes, the team found they can use much less steel while keeping the massive towers stable in rough ocean conditions. This reduces the expenses for companies looking to build wind farms in deep waters.
Floating projects have historically cost significantly more than traditional fixed-bottom turbines. While fixed structures are anchored directly into the shallow seabed, floating designs need complex buoys to stay upright. This optimization brings the price of these floating bases much closer to their fixed counterparts, potentially opening up vast, deep-water areas for energy generation.
This shift makes offshore wind power much more practical on a larger scale 🚀.
Will we soon see floating wind farms popping up in deep waters around the globe?

New Graz University of Technology design rules aim to fix electric car batteries
🔋
Researchers at Graz University of Technology have published new design standards to make electric vehicle batteries easier to fix and recycle. Their analysis shows that repairing these batteries is worthwhile if you can recover and reuse just 8 percent of the cells.
Many modern electric car batteries are currently sealed with glue. This forces owners to replace the entire pack if a small component fails. The E-Track project wants to stop this by making modular batteries the standard.
📍 Battery cells make up about 75 percent of a pack's total mass.
📍 Cells are the single largest cost factor in electric vehicle production.
📍 Standardized designs allow emergency teams to handle damaged or burning batteries with much less risk. 🛠️
Unlike today's common practice of "sealed for life" designs that prioritize compact, rigid packaging at the expense of serviceability, this approach puts long-term maintenance first.

Ultra-thin battery developed
Researchers at Dongguk University built a battery 2.77 micrometers thick, 30 times thinner than a human hair. Removing the anode—the negative terminal—simplifies the design. 🔋⚙️🔬
This tech fits tiny medical devices and wearables. A special tin and carbon coating keeps the battery efficient by preventing lithium loss during use.
