Teacher's Day is primarily synonymous with Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishan’s birthday. But there also are many more teachers who’ve left an indelible mark in our lives and careers. To name a few, how can we forget about Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Rabindranath Tagore, Swami Vivekananda and Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Azad? Teachers don’t just contribute towards academic success. They have a pivotal role to play when it comes to shaping lives, more importantly mindsets.

There’s no doubting the fact that teaching has always been one of the highly regarded professions in the world. But who are the 21st century dignitaries who make this profession respectful, valuable and worthy?

Anand Kumar

Anand Kumar started the Super 30 programme to help underprivileged students crack national-level examinations such as IIT-JEE. Anand had once secured admission in Cambridge University, but could not attend due to lack of funds. With a profound interest in Mathematics, Anand started the Super 30 programme in the year of 2000, and ended up helping students prepare for IIT Joint Entrance Examinations. During his teaching career from 2003 to 2017, 391 out of 450 of his students successfully passed the IITs. A film titled ‘Super 30’ based on his life and hard work starred Hrithik Roshan.

Babar Ali

When he was 16, he was called the 'youngest headmaster in the world' by BBC for running a school in Murshidabad, West Bengal. He started teaching at the age of nine, although in a playful manner, soon after which he decided to continue teaching other children on a bigger scale. Starting with only a few children, he now caters to more than 800 children, with a total of 10 teachers as an integral part of his outdoor school. Babar’s aim is to make tuition fee free to help increase the literacy rates in economically disadvantaged areas. Drawing inspiration from Swami Vivekananda, Babar succeeded in getting recognition from local governmental authorities to entitle his students with a portion of free rice at the end of every month.

Aditya Kumar

Popularly known as ‘Cycle Guru’, Aditya Kumar has traveled across the country on a cycle to spread awareness about the importance of education among the despondent sections of the society. Kumar teaches language and mathematics for free to students who cannot afford basic education. He sleeps on the footpath, has no home, nor money, but just a bicycle. Kumar started touring India on January 12, 2015 with mere Rs 500 in his pocket. He took 45 months to travel through 29 states. He won 25 national and international awards, and has also entered the Limca Book of Records.

Rajesh Kumar Sharma

A college dropout who runs a general store by himself, Rajesh Kumar Sharma teaches nearly 200 children from poor families under a metro rail flyover near the Yamuna Bank station in New Delhi. He started this project in the year of 2007 with just two young students. The initiative has now grown into a school. In his school, Rajesh does not follow any fixed syllabus. His main motto is to spread basic education among the deprived section of our country.

Professor Sandeep Desai

Mr Desai goes around begging in Mumbai's local trains to collect funds for his English-medium schools for the underprivileged in rural Maharashtra and Rajasthan. He's been a subject of feature stories, so he carries laminated versions of newspaper clippings -- a way to vouch for the authenticity of his charity named Shloka. Personal contributions soon started trickling in and the corporates, who had initially not shown interest, also warmed up to the idea. In 2015-2016 alone, Desai shared that he had raised Rs 40 lakhs with the help of corporate donations.
