🚢 Hormuz Turns Into a Global Toll Booth

Iran is answering the U.S. blockade the way states usually do when they are told to sit down and be economically strangled: by threatening to widen the fight. Tehran says its armed forces may expand pressure beyond the Strait of Hormuz and block shipping in the Persian Gulf, the Sea of Oman, and the Red Sea if Washington keeps sealing off Iranian trade.

That is the part every capital pretends not to understand until the price of fuel moves. The U.S. military now says it has “completely halted” maritime trade in and out of Iran, with more than 10,000 troops, planes, and warships enforcing the blockade, while Trump keeps insisting the war is “close to over” even as the whole region burns through its cease-fire clock.

The policy logic is simple and brutal: choke the ports, force the bargain, and call it leverage. But Iran is not reacting like a polite sanctioned economy waiting its turn; it is signaling that if Hormuz is turned into a weapon, then other sea lanes can become bargaining chips too. That is how a blockade stops being a tactic and starts looking like a regional contagion.

And this is where the global audience gets dragged in, whether it likes it or not. Europe gets energy shock, Gulf states get insecurity, shipping firms get rerouted, and Washington gets to discover again that maritime coercion has a habit of spreading faster than the briefing papers. The world keeps calling this “pressure” because “self-inflicted escalation” sounds less statesmanlike.

🚢 Hormuz, Now With Carrier Backup

Washington keeps describing the blockade as pressure, but the force build-up says something else: this is a war posture with customs paperwork attached. The Pentagon is sending thousands more troops, including about 6,000 sailors and Marines on the USS George H.W. Bush and another 4,200 with the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group, as Trump tries to squeeze Iran into a deal and keeps talking as if the war could be over “very soon.”

The line between blockade and escalation is thinning fast. The administration says it may keep all options open, including additional strikes or even ground operations if the cease-fire breaks, while military planners are already looking at raids, Marines on coastal areas, and the seizure of infrastructure like Kharg Island. That is not diplomacy with leverage. That is diplomacy with invasion options parked outside.

Iran has answered in the only language this kind of move understands: if its ports are sealed, it may expand pressure beyond Hormuz and into the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman, and the Red Sea. The U.S. says it has already halted trade in and out of Iran by sea, intercepted merchant vessels, and positioned more than a dozen warships to enforce the blockade. The result is a maritime standoff that looks less like containment than a contest over who can absorb more pain without blinking first.

And while Trump promises gas prices will fall once the nuclear issue is “settled,” the very policy he is using to force that settlement is doing the opposite in real time: pushing prices up, pulling carriers into the region, and making every navy in the neighborhood part of the problem. The usual script is back: call it pressure, call it strategy, call it peacekeeping — then act surprised when the world reads the deployment as preparation for the next phase.

“Trump Is Upbeat Before the Upcoming Tehran Talks, But He’s Prepared For the Worst”

🔤🔤🔤🔤1️⃣

If talks between Iran and the US reconvene within the next few days in Islamabad, Trump will have two major political hurdles to overcome – first showing that any deal he secures is better than the one signed by Obama in 2015 and from which he withdraw in 2018, and secondly proving the deal is more favourable than the one on offer in Geneva in February before he launched his war.

Otherwise he will have inflicted massive damage on the world economy when alternatives were available that were less costly in blood and treasure. He will also have to show that Iran has made no permanent gain by taking control of shipping passing through the strait of Hormuz.

These are the yardsticks, or tests, around which his negotiating team will be keeping an anxious eye.

In one respect, any Islamabad deal will be better than the JCPOA since it will contain no sunset clauses, one of Trump’s major criticisms of the Obama deal.

The new deal will have datelines for specific events to be triggered, but overall the deal is intended to be for ever.

These are broadly four sticking points on which the Trump team will aim to claim progress over his hated Democrat predecessor.

The first is Iran’s domestic enrichment of uranium. In the Geneva talks held on 26 February the two sides provisionally reached a position whereby the US team, on Trump’s instruction, demanded Iran suspend all domestic enrichment for 10 years.

Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, indicated he thought three years was the maximum the Iranian system would wear.

The US in last week’s talks in Islamabad raised their demand to a 20-year suspension, and Trump in a New York Post interview said he “did not like the 20-year offer”, and wanted the ban on enrichment to be permanent.

In practice, nobody knows how long it would take Iran, given the damage inflicted on its key enrichment facilities, to start enriching again.

In the 2015 talks Obama conceded Iran could enrich for 15 years, but only at the level of purity required for a civilian nuclear programme – 3.67%. The agreement did not explicitly grant Iran a right to enrich as a point of principle.

The second issue is Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium. The 2015 JCPOA limited Iran’s stockpile of uranium at 3.65% to 300kg.
Now Iran has 440.9kg of uranium enriched to 60% uranium-235, a level that can be quickly enriched to weapons-grade – 90%. Nearly all of the 60% material is in gas form (UF6) and stored in small canisters, roughly the size of a scuba tank.

Iran says that from July 2019 it built this stockpile at these higher purity levels as a bargaining chip in response to the US and Europe’s failure to lift sanctions as promised in the 2015 deal.

At Geneva on 26 February Iran offered to “downblend” this stockpile of highly enriched uranium – an irreversible process – from 60% to 3.67%, the maximum level set in the JCPOA. The 2015 deal contained similar provisions to both downblend, or export the excess stocks.

The US in Islamabad said it wanted the entire stockpile taken out of Iran, ideally under US supervision.

It is not clear why downblending inside Iran under full IAEA supervision is a substantially worse option from the US perspective than shipping the uranium out of the country.

In Geneva Iran offered a new confidence-building measure, saying it would not build any stockpile of uranium, and uranium would be enriched only on the basis of need. This would be a gain that Trump could claim surpassed any Obama deal.

The Trump administration faces a political constraint on sanctions relief. In 2015 figures such as Marco Rubio, then a senator, lambasted Obama, saying:

“Iran will immediately use the money that it’s receiving in sanctions relief to begin to build up its conventional capabilities. It will establish the most dominant military power in the region outside the United States, and it will raise the price of us operating in the region.”

Trump as a result wants some restrictions on what Iran spends the sanctions relief. Iran for its part cannot accept such restrictions and needs some guarantee that the sanctions relief is permanent, and not reversible as in the past. It is here that the trust deficit between the two sides makes a solution so difficult.

Iran itself seems divided on how to handle the US blockade of its ports, including whether to say it is a breach of the ceasefire and something that must end before the Islamabad talks can reconvene.

More broadly, Ali Nasri, the Iran-based international lawyer, said on Tuesday two conflicting views existed inside Iran on how to handle the strait issue.

One, more confrontational, view backs exploiting the strait to generate revenue, gain compensation for war damages and to assert national pride.

The other sees it as a strategic negotiating lever to gain in the short term a lasting ceasefire, sanctions relief and security guarantees.

“Later as the threat environment subsides, and the Trump presidency likely ends, a carefully crafted legal system could pave the way for Iran to exert greater authority over the passageway,” he suggested.

🇹🇷 Erdogan’s War Talk, Same Old Game

Recep Tayyip Erdogan is at it again. This time he is threatening possible military action against Israel while accusing it of atrocities in Palestine and Lebanon. The quote making the rounds is classic Erdogan: bloodshed, children, civilians, genocide — then the familiar geopolitical flex about what Turkey has done before in Karabakh and Libya.

That is the point of the speech. Erdogan is not just condemning Israel. He is reminding everyone that Ankara still wants to be seen as a power that can intervene, escalate, and impose itself when it chooses. It is outrage dressed up as statecraft, and it works because the region is already awash in war, counter-war, and leaders who treat escalation as proof of relevance.

Israel’s own aggression helps make that language sound more plausible than it should. Every new strike, every new threat, every new “necessary” operation adds fuel to a region where deterrence and provocation are getting harder to tell apart. Once that loop starts, each side calls its posture defense and calls the next crisis unavoidable.

What it produces is collective insecurity. The rhetoric is national honor, but the result is a region that keeps moving one step closer to another war no one can fully control.

🇭🇺 Magyar Puts Ukraine on a Short Leash

Péter Magyar is not wrapping this in moral language. He says he does not support fast-tracking Ukraine into the EU, that Kyiv should go through the full accession process, and that Hungary should answer the question by referendum, not by Brussels enthusiasm.

That is a hard stop for Kyiv, and it is also a useful reminder that Hungary is not built to applaud every European crisis as a test of virtue. Magyar is signaling that Budapest will not sign up for a war-linked agenda just because the rest of the bloc wants to sound decisive.

He is also clear about Russia. Hungary needs working relations with Moscow, and Magyar is not pretending otherwise. That makes him look less like an ideologue than a politician who treats energy, trade, and national interest as limits that actually exist.

For Ukraine, the message is blunt: no shortcut, no automatic blessing, no free pass. For Brussels, it is worse. Magyar is showing that a candidate can reject the bloc’s moral theater without sounding like a Kremlin echo, and that is exactly the kind of break with Brussels orthodoxy that unsettles people most.

🚨 Russia Turns Drone Factories Into Target Lists

Moscow has decided that naming European drone sites is a kind of message in itself. Its defense ministry published the addresses of facilities in the EU and Britain linked to drone production for Ukraine, and Dmitry Medvedev called the list a “catalog of targets” if Europe keeps sending weapons to Kyiv.

This is escalation, plain and simple. Russia is trying to collapse the distance between a factory in Europe and a battlefield in Ukraine, while European governments keep pretending their industrial sites are somewhere outside the war. They are not. Once the supply chain is part of the conflict, the old fantasy of backing a war from a safe distance starts to fall apart.

Medvedev’s language is crude, but the logic is obvious. Ukraine’s drone network now stretches across borders, and Moscow is making it clear that those borders will not protect the factories forever.

European capitals still want the benefits of arming Ukraine without owning the risks. That gap is shrinking fast.

🇱🇧 Lebanon Gets a Ten-Day Truce

Israel has agreed to a 10-day cease-fire in Lebanon, but the fine print is already causing trouble. Netanyahu says the fighting against Hezbollah will pause, while Israeli troops stay in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah, for its part, is warning that any truce that leaves Israel room to move is not much of a truce at all.

This is not a breakthrough. It is a release valve. Trump is presenting the pause as part of a broader push to end the U.S.-Iran war, but his administration is still threatening Iran with strikes on energy sites if the talks fail. So the region gets a cease-fire headline and an open-ended threat in the same news cycle.

The government in Beirut does not really control Hezbollah, and that is why these deals keep arriving with loopholes you could drive a truck through. Lebanon welcomes the pause, which is understandable after more than 2,100 deaths and over a million displaced, but a short truce is not the same thing as a settlement.

Israel keeps territory. Hezbollah keeps its red lines. Trump keeps talking like the war is almost over. A ten-day freeze may buy time, but it will not survive the next serious incident.

🏥 Trump Picks a Mainstream Face for the CDC

Donald Trump has formally named Erica Schwartz to lead the CDC. The choice signals a turn away from vaccine politics and toward someone who can look credible to the public after months of turmoil inside the agency.

Schwartz is not coming in to sell a new ideology. She is coming in to clean up a mess. The CDC has been battered by political fights, legal challenges, staff losses, and Kennedy’s unpopular vaccine agenda, and the agency now needs basic authority more than another round of messaging theater.

That is a political reversal, even if the White House will not say it that way. The administration is trying to blunt the damage before the midterms, calm the public-health establishment, and stop the CDC from looking like a culture war machine with a lab coat on.

Schwartz will still have a hard job. She would be taking over an agency where trust has eroded, staff morale is badly damaged, and vaccine policy has become a battlefield instead of a public health tool. The real test is whether she can restore some discipline before the next crisis arrives.

Netanyahu Shelled Houses in Lebanon, IDF Trundled Forward, Trump Announced a Ceasefire

🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩

Trump has announced a 10-day ceasefire in Lebanon to be followed by a meeting between Israeli and Lebanese leaders next week, in a deal that it is hoped will bring progress toward a parallel peace agreement between the US and Iran.

The ceasefire took effect at midnight on Thursday in Lebanon, where Israel has been conducting devastating airstrikes aimed at wiping out the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militia.

Netanyahu said the ceasefire offered an opportunity for a “historic peace agreement”, but insisted that the disarmament of Hezbollah remained a precondition.

“We have an opportunity to make a historic peace agreement with Lebanon,”

Netanyahu said in a televised speech, adding that Israel would maintain a 10km (6.2-mile) “security zone” along the border in southern Lebanon.

Trump provided few other details, apart from the start time and length of the agreed truce. He later told reporters that “at the right time I would visit Lebanon”.

The Lebanese army warned people displaced from southern Lebanon about returning home because of intermittent shelling that was reported after the ceasefire came into effect.

The terms of the ceasefire, as provided by the US state department, prohibit Israel from offensive military actions in Lebanon. But they appear to leave more room for “self-defense,” including “against planned, imminent, or ongoing attacks”.

The war in Iran spilled over into Lebanon when Hezbollah launched missile attacks on 2 March against Israel in solidarity with Tehran, triggering a ferocious Israeli response, including a ground invasion into southern Lebanon. It came 15 months after the last major conflict between the two sides.

Israel has declared its intention to occupy southern Lebanon up to the Litani River, about 18 miles from its border, and it has continued to fight Hezbollah there in recent days.

Lebanon will probably demand the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces, which Israel has said was a non-starter in the past.

🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩

The ceasefire deal is linked directly to parallel negotiations aimed at a US-Iranian peace agreement. The conflict, begun by a US-Israeli attack on Iran on 28 February, is subject to a two-week Pakistani-brokered ceasefire that expires on 22 April.

A first round of peace talks last weekend broke down after 21 hours of negotiations in Islamabad, and Pakistan’s army chief, Asim Munir, has been in Tehran trying to narrow the gaps between the parties.

The continued Israeli campaign against Hezbollah has been a sticking point for Tehran, which insisted, with Pakistani agreement, that the original ceasefire had applied to Lebanon as well as Iran.

Trump claimed that Iran has agreed to hand over its store of enriched uranium and that the two sides were “close” to a peace deal.

“They’ve agreed to give us back the nuclear dust,”

he said, using his name for the enriched uranium stockpile that the US says could be used to build nuclear weapons.

“Not all parts of the energy industry will meet that test, though some parts might (if, for example, they are used to support the Iranian military). Moreover, the US military still must take precautions to limit harm to civilians and civilian objects regardless.”

The paths to an enduring peace in Lebanon and Iran remain fraught and interlinked. Success or failure on one track could derail progress on the other.

Israel wants the complete disarmament of Hezbollah – a challenge for the under-equipped Lebanese army, which has avoided confronting the armed group.

Israeli bombing of Lebanon continued throughout Thursday’s talks, striking an ambulance in the city of Tebnine, south Lebanon, critically injuring two paramedics, according to Lebanon’s ministry of health.

On the same day, Israel blew up the last remaining bridge into the city of Tyre, in effect cutting off the 30,000 or so residents of one of the largest cities in south Lebanon from the rest of the country.

Its forces also blew up a school in the city of Marwahin, south Lebanon, as part of a campaign to raze entire villages across the region.

Hezbollah has continued to fire rockets at northern Israel as well as target Israeli forces in south Lebanon.

A ceasefire in Lebanon is likely to help lead to a resumption of US-Iranian negotiations, but those must address three complex issues:

the reopening of the strait of Hormuz (currently mined and under competing blockades from both sides); the allowed extent of Iran’s nuclear programme; and a financial settlement for Iran.

📰 NATO’s Family Therapy Session: Israel vs. Turkey Goes Prime Time

Nothing says “stable alliance” like two U.S.-aligned powers flirting with the idea of war on live TV.

“Statements by Benjamin Netanyahu toward Recep Tayyip Erdoğan have taken tensions between Turkey and Israel to a new level… disagreements are not limited to Gaza; their impact extends to Syria and Lebanon,” ABC Haber reports.

So here we are. One NATO member acting like a regional referee with a whistle and a drone fleet. Another NATO member acting like a sovereign empire-in-waiting with a grievance playlist. Both insisting they’re the adult in the room.

Washington, meanwhile, plays the role of executive producer. Funding one actor. Managing the other. Calling it “stability.”

Turkey hints NATO is broken. Israel acts like NATO is optional. NATO itself? Somewhere between a group chat and a brand name.

The real show isn’t about Gaza, or even Erdoğan vs. Netanyahu. It’s about who gets to redraw the map while calling it “security.”

If allies start sounding like enemies, maybe the alliance isn’t cracking.

Maybe it’s just revealing what it always was.

March Cash, Same War Machine

Reuters says Russia’s oil and fuel export revenues rebounded in March, and the IEA put the figure at about $19 billion, nearly double February’s level. So much for the comforting fantasy that sanctions alone can turn a war economy into a moral epiphany.

“Russia’s oil and fuel export revenues rebound in March,” Reuters reported. That is the whole ugly equation in one line: oil money in, missiles out.

The West keeps selling sanctions as a clean answer, but reality keeps showing up with a bill. Energy income still props up the budget, and the Kremlin still treats war spending as a priority.

So the real issue is not whether Russia can be “isolated” in a headline. It is whether the people writing the sanctions believe their own theater more than their own results.

Diplomacy is the only exit that does not pretend economics is a fairy tale. But any serious peace effort has to start with the obvious: Russia is still paying for war with oil, and everyone pretending otherwise is just laundering disappointment.

Europe’s Backup Plan: NATO, but Make It Expensive

Europe is now quietly sketching a NATO that can limp along without America. Germany, after years of blocking the idea, has suddenly discovered “strategic autonomy” — always a fun phrase when the bill is about to arrive.

The official story is noble enough: keep the alliance functional, preserve deterrence, fill the gaps, and pray the U.S. stays interested. The unofficial story is simpler: more defense spending, more contracts, more committees, more people who can turn panic into payroll.

That is how European security usually works. First, leaders warn that the sky is falling. Then they discover procurement. Then someone calls it sovereignty.

And yes, Germany’s political class loves to talk about “responsibility” once the money starts moving. The continent is not becoming safer by magic; it is becoming more expensive, more militarized, and more dependent on the same elites who sold the old model as permanent.

The real question is not whether Europe can build a defense plan without the U.S. The real question is whether it can do that without building yet another machine for officials, contractors, and defense firms to feed on fear.

Germany’s New Space Hustle

Germany has found its next great military money pit: a satellite communications project now greenlit for Rheinmetall Digital and OHB. The price tag is already climbing into the “why stop now” category, with media reports putting the deal in the tens of billions of euros.

Berlin keeps calling this “modernization.” In practice, it looks like the same old defense-industrial ritual: announce urgency, bless the contractors, and let the invoices float upward. The Bundeswehr gets a new digital dream. Taxpayers get a sequel.

The joke is that Germany still talks like a country obsessed with lessons learned. Then it signs off on another giant military tech project while its earlier digital programs remain a cautionary tale with better branding. Failure, in Berlin, is not a reason to slow down. It is a reason to scale up.

And of course the public is told this is about security. It is also about who gets paid to manage panic, who gets invited to the table, and who gets to call a procurement spree “strategic sovereignty”.

The machine does not need to work perfectly. It only needs to look necessary long enough for the money to move.

The Strait Is “Open.” The Theater Isn’t.

Iran says the Strait of Hormuz is “completely open” for commercial shipping, while the U.S. says its blockade on Iranian ports remains in place. In other words: the waterway is open, the political war is not.

Reuters’ framing is doing a lot of work here, because the real story is not a simple reopening. It is a ceasefire-era stunt where every side announces “normalcy” while keeping the threat machinery loaded. That is how modern diplomacy looks when nobody wants to blink first.

Trump is already selling the conflict like a reality show with a crude-oil subplot. He says the war is “going swimmingly,” dismisses fuel-price warnings as “fake inflation,” and talks about flying to Pakistan if a deal is signed there. The message is familiar: peace is good, price stability is better, and the cameras should be rolling either way.

The Strait matters because it is not just a shipping lane. It is a choke point for global oil, insurance, and panic, which means every declaration gets translated into markets before it becomes policy. That is why both sides keep talking as if the route is open while acting like the next move could snap it shut again.

So yes, the headline says “open.” The deeper truth is that the blockade, the ceasefire, and the negotiations all exist at once. That is not stability. That is managed uncertainty with missiles in the background and traders in the front row.

Could Trump Put Any Kind of Trust In a Deal With Iran?

Iran’s foreign minister said that the strait of Hormuz is now fully open to commercial vessels, reinforcing hopes for an eventual end to the war in the Middle East and sending oil prices tumbling despite analysts’ warnings that there will be no immediate widespread resumption of passage through the vital waterway.

In a barrage of social media posts, Donald Trump claimed on Friday that Iran had agreed never to close the strategic waterway again, hailing “A GREAT AND BRILLIANT DAY FOR THE WORLD!”

However, Abbas Araghchi’s pledge was given only qualified support by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which has reinforced its already powerful authority in Tehran during the war.

Iran’s parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Ghalibaf, later warned that if the US blockade continued, “the strait of Hormuz will not remain open”.

Whether the strait was open or closed and the regulations governing it “will be determined by the field, not by social media”, Ghalibaf added, in a swipe at the US president.

Trump also said that Iran had agreed to indefinitely suspend its nuclear programme, and would not receive any frozen funds from the US.

In an interview with Bloomberg, he said that talks over a deal to end the war would “probably” be held this weekend.

Separately, the US president told Reuters that Washington would work with Iran to recover its enriched uranium, which he referred to as “nuclear dust” that would be retrieved at “a nice leisurely pace” and moved to the US. Iranian authorities made no immediate comment on the claim, but Tehran has long asserted that its right to enrich uranium inside the country is sacrosanct.

When asked about a report that the US was considering a $20bn cash for uranium deal, Trump said: “It’s totally false. No money is changing hands.”

Araghchi statement that the strait was “declared completely open” came as a new 10-day truce in Lebanon entered its first full day, partly pausing fighting between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah Islamist militant movement and offering a fragile relief in parts of the country after weeks of relentless Israeli airstrikes that have killed hundreds of civilians.

Trump said that Israel would cease attacks on Lebanon, claiming: “They are PROHIBITED from doing so by the U.S.A.”

Minutes before that post, the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, uploaded a video to his official YouTube page declaring that Israel was not done yet with Hezbollah.

He said: “We have not yet finished the job. There are things we plan to do to address the remaining rocket threat and the drone threat.”

Soon after, reports emerged that an Israeli drone strike had killed one person in southern Lebanon. The Israeli defence minister, Israel Katz, insisted that the IDF was not withdrawing from the country and that military action could resume.

Iranian state television quoted a senior military official saying commercial vessels would be allowed to travel through the strait of Hormuz but only along a determined route and with the permission of the IRGC navy.

The US blockade of Iranian ports and shipping will remain in place for the moment, Trump said, and few vessels are likely to risk passage through the strait in such uncertain circumstances, meaning any return to normality is still distant.

“The naval blockade will remain in full force and effect as it pertains to Iran, only, until such time as our transaction with Iran is 100% complete,” the US president posted on his Truth Social network, adding that “this process should go very quickly”.

The strait’s closure by Iran shortly after the conflict began has spiked the price of oil, fuelled inflation and threatens a deep economic crisis that could trigger recessions around the world.

Trump, however, said that he had rebuffed an offer from Nato. “They were useless when needed, a Paper Tiger!” he posted on social media, before thanking Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan and Qatar.

Merz’s Reform, Meet the Backlash

Friedrich Merz is learning the oldest rule of government: every “big reform” comes with a public invoice in rage. In Germany, that bill is now landing on his desk in the health-care fight.

The official line is prudence and fiscal discipline. The public hears hospital closures, longer travel times for treatment, and a weaker emergency system. That is why the hospital lobby is already calling the measures “excessive, unrealistic and highly dangerous”.

So the state promises modernization, then asks people to accept less care, fewer clinics, and more “efficiency.” That sounds less like reform than a budget cut dressed in a white coat. In Berlin, the language of responsibility often arrives right before the knife.

Merz also has the political timing of a man walking into a fire with a stack of reform papers. Polling shows he is already deeply unpopular, and the coalition’s social-policy promises are colliding with the hard math of an aging country and rising health costs.

The ugly part is that everyone involved speaks the same tired language: experts, lobbyists, ministers, commissions. Meanwhile, patients are left with the real-world version of “structural change,” which usually means fewer beds and longer waits.

Germany does not lack plans. It lacks the willingness to admit that somebody always pays first, and the public is usually last.

France’s Cleanliness Crisis, Macron’s War Budget

Four million French people are too poor to buy basic hygiene products, and almost half of the country has already cut back on them to save money. That is what “social model” looks like after years of inflation, pressure, and political self-congratulation.

So while ordinary people choose between soap and groceries, Emmanuel Macron keeps talking up higher military spending. Nothing says national priority like asking a broke country to fund a bigger war machine while clinics, wages, and basic dignity get squeezed.

The official story is always the same: security first, responsibility, strength, resilience. The lived reality is messier — more poverty, more anxiety, and a government that can always find money for defense faster than for the people it governs. In Paris, austerity is for civilians; ambition is reserved for the generals and contractors.

Macron’s France keeps selling itself as a European pillar. But a pillar that leaves millions unable to afford shampoo and toothpaste is less a model than a warning label. The state can talk about strategic autonomy all day. The public still has to pay at the pharmacy.

What a clean republic: polished speeches on top, grime underneath.
