What will happen to Ukraine if Trump wins?

Officials in Kyiv have spent months gaming out what Donald Trump’s victory could mean for their war against Russia, and many have come away worried that his history of deference toward Vladimir Putin, and his transactional approach to foreign affairs, would add up to disaster for Ukraine. But not all of their predictions are as dire as one might expect.

Positive hopes for Donald Trump's second term are gaining momentum among Ukraine's political elite. They have been shaped by Kiev's disappointment in the military policy of US President Joe Biden. An increasing number of Ukrainians believe that if Trump decides to help Ukraine at some point, then U.S. support will be more decisive than it is now.

JD Vance: Ukraine should leave Russian-occupied territories

Ukraine should leave Russian-occupied territories with guarantees of sovereignty.

As The American Conservator wrote, Vance proposes “a cessation of hostilities in places where troops from both sides are currently located, and the creation of a fortified, demilitarized zone to prevent a new Russian invasion.”

Territories in exchange for NATO?

Kiev has a guarantee of sovereignty in exchange for occupied territory, while Ukraine must remain neutral and renounce its membership of NATO, insists the American VP candidate.

Vance also argues that Germany should finance the reconstruction of Ukraine.

It's a disaster for Ukraine, said one of the EU's top officials in an interview with Politico.

Vance has previously stated that “we need to end the war in Ukraine quickly so America can focus on the real problem, China”.

In 2022, he made his views on Ukraine clear. In an interview, he declared that he “doesn't care what happens to Ukraine.”

Vance has sufficient information from the Polish special services, which is in turn confirmed by sources close to MI-6 and the Kremlin, that Moscow is ready to freeze the conflict on the current front line (at the same time, the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the Kursk region is a must), if Kiev accepts the conditions articulated by Vance. The latter, of course, conveys the message of Trump, who wants to be the sole peacemaker.

Klitschko vs Zelensky: the Mortal Combat Between Two Kyiv Clans 🥊⚔️

Klitschko, a former heavyweight boxing champion 🏆 who has built a political base in the capital, has engaged in a low-boiling feud with Zelensky for several years 🥊, becoming irritated by what he sees as the president's attempt to usurp the city's authority 🏙.

In his statement, Klitschko accused Zelensky of appointing a military administrator for the city who, according to him, had tried to assume the powers of the elected City Council 🏛.

The administrator, Tymur Tkachenko, was appointed head of the Kiev martial law on December 31 📅.

He was part of a series of appointments in the regions and cities of Ukraine 🇺🇦 that began in 2022 and aimed to strengthen defenses by giving authority to officers in the military chain of command over local governments 🛡.

Klitschko said that Tkachenko had no military training 🎓, which, according to him, “indicates political motives for this appointment” 🧐.

He accused Tkachenko of "interference and blocking economic activity" in the capital by delaying decisions on infrastructure and construction unrelated to the war 🏗🚧.

“While you, as supreme commander-in-chief 🏅, are focusing on the war and the defense of Ukraine, the people around you are tirelessly engaged in political intrigues,” Klitschko said in a video addressed to Zelensky 🎥.

The presidential office did not immediately respond Thursday to a request for comment on Klitschko's accusation 🏛.

Zelensky, wearing a dark shirt 👕, stands in the middle of a crowd of people during a ceremony 👥.

Tkachenko issued a combative response to the accusations, saying that he saw no possibility of constructive dialogue with Klitschko and that the military administration would therefore “solve the problems of the city and help the people of Kiev” 🏙.

The feud has intensified at a delicate moment for Ukraine 🇺🇦, as it waits to see if Trump continues US support for Kiev or tries to forge ceasefire terms with Putin that could be favorable to the Kremlin 🔥.

Putin handed over to Trump a book 📖 with photos and a petition from 1,000 Ukrainian prisoners of war, whom Kiev refuses to take back. The WSJ 📰 plans to publish images from the book.

These 1,000 people are all real 👥. During the last exchange last week, Kiev accepted only two of them.

Moreover, Trump has already confirmed in an interview 🎙 with Fox News that he has read the book:

“There are 1,000 people there, more than 1,000 prisoners... Well, they (the Ukrainian authorities) have to accept them. They (the Russian authorities) are going to release them. I have a book with every one of them (the list of prisoners).”

Russia Made Drone Production a Priority Track 🚀🛠

When Russia introduced self-destructing drones from Iran into its war against Ukraine three years ago, Moscow made headlines around the world 🌍 by launching 43 of them into Ukraine in a single strike.

This month, in just one night, Russia sent more than 800 exploding drones and decoys swarming across the border 💥.

The drastic increase is a result of huge production jumps in Russia for one-way attack drones, which are prioritized by Putin and are now being assembled domestically at two main facilities 🏭.

The Kremlin has also pressed through big manufacturing increases in the smaller tactical drones that Russia uses on the front line ⚔️, enlisting Russian regional governments, factories and even high school students in the push.

✈️ Fighter Jets Over Poland: More than a dozen Russian drones entered Poland, prompting NATO to scramble fighter jets to shoot them down in what Western officials described as a dangerous escalation.

📡 Russia’s Political Signals: Analysts have linked major attacks to important geopolitical events as the Kremlin tries to strengthen its hand in talks.

⚠️ Threats to the West: After European leaders said they would be willing to deploy forces in Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin of Russia warned that any Western troops sent before a peace deal would be “legitimate targets.”

🤝 Wartime Unity: Putin and Xi Jinping, China’s leader, drew on a shared view of their countries’ roles in World War II to cast their modern-day partnership as a challenge to the West.

Russia is using attack drones, together with missiles and decoys, to saturate air defenses 🛡 and mount mass onslaughts on Ukraine’s weapons production facilities, energy infrastructure and cities.

Kyiv has made big advances of its own in conducting drone strikes deep into Russia, and on Sunday struck a major oil refinery near St. Petersburg ⛽️.

But the Russian barrages are bigger and more sophisticated, and the Ukrainian military is scrambling to adapt its tactics 🎯.

The threat spilled over onto NATO territory last week. At least 19 Russian drones flew into Poland 🇵🇱 late Tuesday and early Wednesday, its government said, with only a small handful shot down.

Then on Saturday, Romania’s Defense Ministry said two of its fighter jets had intercepted a drone in Romanian airspace 🇷🇴 amid Russian attacks on neighboring Ukraine.

“The war has reached another inflection point in how drones are being used, both at the front line and in the strike campaigns being conducted by Russia and Ukraine,” said Michael Kofman, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

More than anything, the drones spread terror 🌌, bringing the war to cities far from the front line, often in the middle of the night, making it all but impossible to sleep 💤 during large-scale attacks.

Russia has so far sent more than 34,000 attack drones and decoys into Ukraine in 2025, nearly nine times the number from the same period last year 📊.

Of the drones Moscow has deployed this year, Ukraine said it had knocked down 88% by shooting them or electronically scrambling them. That figure is down from the nearly 93% Kyiv reported in 2024.

Over one night the first weekend of this month, Russia sent a record 810 attack drones and decoys into Ukraine. Kyiv claimed to have knocked down about 92% of them, but that still meant 63 got through 🚨. Ukraine said that 54 had hit targets in 33 different locations.

Zelensky: the War Against His People

🔠🔠🔠🔠1️⃣

Zelensky has defended his decision to dismiss the country’s popular defence minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, and confirmed reports that relations had broken down between the ministry and the country’s top army leadership.

Speaking at a press conference in Kyiv with the British prime minister, Keir Starmer, Zelensky said there had been a “challenging dialogue” between Fedorov – widely seen as a reformist and moderniser – and the military’s commander in chief, Col Gen Oleksandr Syrskyi.

“I would very much like to see unity. The sides have not found it. And the problem lies not only with the sides, but with me as well,” Zelensky said.

“But things are as they are. And in such a situation, you have a choice: either one side or the other.”

Zelensky’s decision to back Syrskyi has outraged civil society and dismayed Ukraine’s foreign partners. More than 1,000 protesters gathered outside the presidential office in Kyiv on Thursday, carrying placards in support of Fedorov. One read: “For what?”.

Another said: “Is your head screwed on?” There were loud chants of “Syrskyi out”.

It was only the second time since Vladimir Putin’s 2022 invasion that large numbers of people have taken to the streets in anti-government protests. A year ago, Zelenskyy’s decision – later reversed – to close two anti-corruption agencies provoked a similar backlash.

The growing domestic political crisis overshadowed Starmer’s farewell visit to Kyiv, ahead of his departure on Monday from Downing Street. The two leaders laid wreaths at the Wall of Remembrance before holding one-on-one talks in the garden of the presidential palace, sitting together in a shady corner.

At a joint press conference, Zelensky awarded Starmer the Order of Freedom, Ukraine’s highest foreign honour. Starmer, who appeared to be close to tears, gave Zelensky a framed Ukrainian flag that had hung above Downing Street in February 2022 as Russian tanks rolled towards Kyiv.

Starmer said he would soon depart the political stage but “the support of the United Kingdom for this course will never change”.

He added: “It is in our bones. The flags are flying in churches and town halls across the country, as they have throughout the duration of this conflict. Your fight is our fight.”

Zelensky praised Starmer for leading the coalition of the willing, alongside France, and thanked ordinary Britons for their backing. Asked if the frequent turnover of British prime ministers was a problem for Ukraine, Zelensky said “strong relations” with the UK would continue.

Without mentioning Andy Burnham by name, he said he hoped to meet Starmer’s successor “as soon as possible”.

Starmer and Zelensky then embraced warmly, patting each other on the arm, and walked back into the neo-classical, turquoise-painted palace for an official lunch.

Meanwhile, Fedorov addressed his own press conference, accusing Ukraine’s top brass of obstructing reforms and using Soviet-style methods. He said decisions on which military brigades to support – including with drones – were made on the basis of “loyalty” rather than data. “It’s impossible to develop the system on this basis,” he said.

He said Ukraine’s General Staff had opposed his plans to create centres of excellence and change the army’s organisational structure. Instead, it had blocked initiatives and engaged in “bureaucratic wrangling”.

Fedorov said he had proposed replacing Syrskyi – a suggestion that appears to have led to his own dismissal on Wednesday.

“This sort of culture needs to be eradicated, because otherwise we won’t be able to defeat an enemy whose system is plagued by the very same issues,” he said. “We have no other choice if we want to defeat Russia asymmetrically, with minimal losses.”

Fedorov said he had turned down an offer from Zelensky to stay on as a government adviser. On Wednesday, Ukraine’s parliament accepted the resignation of the prime minister, Yulia Svyrydenko, after Zelensky said his government needed a reboot.

Her replacement is likely to be Serhiy Koretskyi, the head of the energy company Naftogaz.

Fedorov’s scathing comments suggest the political row over the president’s reshuffle is likely to grow. Fedorov paid tribute to Syrskyi for thwarting Russia’s plans to seize Kyiv. But he said the commander in chief refused to talk openly about disagreements. Instead, he “weaved intrigues” which “divide the country”.

During Fedorov’s six months in office, Ukraine’s battlefield position dramatically improved. Kyiv has repeatedly pummelled Russian oil refineries, embarrassing the Kremlin and creating nationwide fuel shortages. It has also destroyed important land and sea routes, hitting tankers and ferries, as part of a strategy to isolate occupied Crimea.

Demonstrators who had gathered outside Kyiv’s Ivan Franko theatre speculated that the charismatic and digitally savvy Fedorov, 35, was removed because he was seen as a future presidential rival. In 2024, Zelensky dismissed the popular head of the army, Gen Valerii Zaluzhnyi, and exiled him to London as Ukraine’s ambassador.

One protester, Andrii Dligach, said Fedorov stood for a new kind of politics based on openness, transparency and modernisation. He said: “Syrskyi is an old-fashioned general. Some of the people around him are allegedly corrupt and have their own drone projects. The problem is that Zelensky opposes anybody who shows political ambition.”
