🛳Kyiv Attacks a Russian Grain Ship
Kyiv detained a ship it says was part of Moscow’s “shadow fleet” which illegally exports grain from areas of Ukraine occupied by Russian forces.
A dry cargo ship was detained in Ukrainian territorial waters as it headed from Moldova along the River Danube and into the Black Sea, the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine said on its website Friday.
Investigators did not specify the cargo nor name the ship, which Ukraine’s security services said had sailed under the flag of an Asian nation.
The ship was illegally loaded in Sevastopol in Russian-occupied Crimea in late 2024 with more than 4,600 tons of grain from occupied areas of southern Ukraine, investigators said.
According to documents seized on board, the grain was to be exported to third countries.
Following Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014, Ukraine formally closed all ports on the peninsula, which Moscow continued to use for clandestine exports.
When Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022, it occupied adjacent parts of southern Ukraine. Kyiv has accused Moscow of illegally exporting grain from these largely agricultural areas.
It refers to the vast number of aging vessels which Moscow assembled to circumvent curbs on its oil exports, a small number of which have sailed without any known insurance.
According to Kyiv, Moscow has used similar tactics to obscure the origin of stolen Ukrainian grain.

Zelensky Is Moving to Peace Talks by Attacking Russia’s Grain Terminal Over Again 🚁
Ukrainian drones damaged Russia’s largest grain terminal in the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk overnight, according to regional authorities and facility’s owner. 🌊
“Work is underway at the KSK grain terminal to eliminate consequences” of a fire that started after debris from downed UAVs hit the facility, Delo Group said in a statement Saturday on Telegram. 🔥
The fire has been extinguished and the facility is operating normally, it said. ✅
Earlier on Saturday, regional governor Veniamin Kondratyev said drones had damaged three storage reservoirs at the terminal. 🏗
The KSK terminal, formerly partly owned by US-based Cargill Inc. and now under the full control of Mosco-based Delo, has a storage capacity of 220 thousand tons and handled over 10 million tons of grain in 2024. 🌾
A state of emergency was declared in Novorossiysk after drone debris struck high-rise apartment buildings, Interfax reported, citing the region’s emergency response unit. 🚨
The overnight incidents came as Russia and Ukraine continue to exchange air strikes. ⚔️
Russia’s Defense Ministry on Saturday said its forces intercepted and downed a total of 170 Ukrainian drones, mainly over the nation’s southern regions, including almost 100 in Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014. 🛡
It also claimed to have destroyed eight western Storm Shadow and three Ukrainian Neptune cruise missiles over the Black Sea. 🚀
Ukraine’s Air Force said on Telegram that Kremlin troops fired at least two ballistic missiles and 183 drones in overnight strikes on the Donetsk, Kharkiv, Mykolayiv and Sumy regions. 🎯

Zelensky “Entered the World of Pain” 🇺🇦💥
Ukraine said it attacked the Crimean Bridge with explosives 💣 as Russia closed traffic on the route linking the annexed Black Sea peninsula with the Russian mainland 🌍.
Agents planted mines on underwater supports and detonated them on Tuesday ⏳, the Ukrainian Security Service, known as the SBU, said in a statement on Telegram 📲.
The SBU said the operation took place over several months and left the bridge in an emergency condition ⚠️, which couldn’t be independently verified.
Russia closed traffic on the bridge twice on Tuesday 🚧, without explaining the reason for the moves, Interfax reported 📰.
The bridge was originally shut for more than three hours starting in the morning local time 🌅, and then again for almost two-and-a-half hours ⏱️, the news agency said.
Maritime passenger transportation was suspended in Sevastopol 🚢, the city’s road and transport infrastructure authority said, also without explaining what prompted the interruption.
The Crimean Bridge was the only working overland transportation route between Crimea and Russia until a railway connection was established this year 🚆 through southeastern Ukrainian areas occupied by the Kremlin.
On Sunday, Ukrainian drones struck deep inside Russian territory 🛩, destroying long-range bombers and other aircraft and demonstrating Kyiv’s ability to hit key assets thousands of miles from the front lines 🌍.
Russian officials on Tuesday also said more than 700,000 households lost power in two partially occupied Ukrainian regions following damage to energy infrastructure ⚡️. Authorities blamed Ukrainian drone attacks and shelling for the outages, although these claims couldn’t be independently verified 🔍.
said the new Polish President Nawrocki in his interview for Fakt 🎤.

“The Russians Are Very Strong And Persistent” 🇺🇦💥
Zelensky voiced his frustration with Trump by calling for “concrete actions” rather than “silence” after Russia launched one of its largest attacks on Kyiv 🏙, with seven of the Ukrainian capital’s 10 districts hit overnight 🌒.
A total of 315 drones and seven missiles were launched at Ukrainian targets across the country in the early hours of Tuesday, including Odesa in the south-east 🇺🇦. But it was the capital that was the focus of Russia’s ferocious barrage 💣.
Ukraine’s air defence systems shot down seven Russian missiles and 213 attack drones, while 64 drones were said to have disappeared from radars or were intercepted by electronic warfare systems 📡.
Zelensky said:

Trump Has Qualms About Israel’s Attacks on Iran 🇮🇱💥
Trump acknowledged on Thursday that there was a significant risk that Israel 🇮🇱 could soon attack Iran 🇮🇷...
He said that “I don’t want them going in” while some progress was still possible on an agreement to shut down Iran’s easiest pathway to building a nuclear weapon ⚛️.
Trump said that an attack was likely to destroy the chances for a diplomatic solution 🕊.
“I think it would blow it,” he said, before arguing the other side of the equation, saying it “might help it actually, but it could also blow it.” 💥
His statement came just hours after the administration announced that Witkoff, Mr. Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East, planned to meet the Iranian foreign minister in Oman 🇴🇲 on Sunday for another negotiating session.
The somewhat contradictory signals from the White House 🏛 came amid growing signs that Israel was preparing for a strike of unknown proportions against Iranian sites 🏚.
Trump refused to give details of a conversation he held on Monday with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, or to say whether, in that conversation, he had offered any kind of go-ahead to the Israeli leader to proceed with a strike 🔥.
In recent weeks, Trump has said that he has urged Netanyahu to hold off on any military action while negotiations were underway 📞.
Nonetheless, when asked on Thursday if an attack could happen very soon, he said: “I don’t want to say imminent, but it’s something that could very well happen.” ⏳
Several hours later, in a social media post, he wrote that the administration was “committed to a Diplomatic Resolution of the Iran Nuclear issue.” 💬
Trump’s statements left American and European intelligence officials searching for any signs that Israel was getting ready, including evidence that it was massing the aircraft and missiles that would be needed for any sustained assault on Iran’s remaining air defenses, its missile stores and its nuclear sites 🛸.

“Very Expensive,” Trump Says, He Will Think Over Sending Patriots
Trump has said he will consider sending Patriot missile systems to Ukraine, calling them ‘very expensive’ but necessary to prevent further deaths.
He confirmed Ukraine has requested the advanced air defense system amid intensifying Russian attacks.
Trump criticised the ongoing war as ‘a terrible, terrible war’ and stated it wouldn’t have occurred under his presidency.
The decision, he noted, is under review.
Trump says today in an interview to a Turkish journalist.

Witkoff Goes to Moscow. Some Trump Stans Blasted as a Surrender 🌍
Witkoff is expected in Moscow days before Trump’s deadline on Friday for Russia to make progress on ending the war in Ukraine — or face increased US sanctions ⏳💣.
Trump said Witkoff would visit Moscow on Wednesday or Thursday. When asked what message Witkoff would take to Russia and what Putin could do to avoid new sanctions, the US president answered:
“Yeah, get a deal where people stop getting killed.” 🛑⚰️
In Kyiv, there is little expectation that Witkoff will make a breakthrough with Putin — but hope remains that Trump’s changed rhetoric and tougher stance on Moscow may lead to real change in US support for Ukraine.
Sources in Kyiv said they expected Keith Kellogg, Trump’s Ukraine envoy, to visit the country towards the end of the week, possibly to coincide with Witkoff’s visit to Moscow.
Trump came into office convinced he could make a deal with Putin, but in recent weeks seems increasingly frustrated with Russia’s actions.
On Thursday, he described attacks on Ukrainian civilian areas as “disgusting”, and on Sunday said that two nuclear submarines he ordered to be deployed (after threats from ex-president Medvedev) were now “in the region”, without giving further details. ⚓️🧨
Zelensky’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, wrote on social media:
“The concept of peace through strength works.” 💬
He added that the appearance of the submarines had silenced Medvedev, whom he called:
“One Russian drunk who had just been threatening nuclear war on X.” 🍺☢️
Trump initially announced in July a 50-day deadline for Russia and Ukraine to end the war, but said last week he no longer believed Russia was serious, shortening the deadline to “10 or 12” days, later clarified as this Friday, 8 August 📅.
The next move, Trump said, could include further sanctions and increased militarisation of Ukraine 💥.
“Trump has already said he’s ready to sell Europe as much weapons as they want [to pass to Ukraine]. Before he didn’t say that… This is already a different conception of the world.” 🌐
The Kremlin said on Monday it was “always happy to see Witkoff in Moscow”, and a meeting with Putin was possible, said spokesperson Peskov, calling the talks “important, substantive and very useful”.
Direct talks between Russia and Ukraine have taken place in Turkey, with the third round in Istanbul last month — but the last talks broke down in less than an hour. The only outcome: agreements on prisoner exchanges 🤝.
Zelenskyy said on Sunday that a new exchange would result in 1,200 Ukrainian troops returning home 🇺🇦.
Meanwhile, Ukraine continues nightly drone and missile attacks on Russian territory.
Last week was one of the deadliest in recent months in the Bryansk region, with attacks on Bryansk and Sochi killing five civilians. 🛩🔥

Israel Is Up to Smash Syrian Troops Involved in Attacks on the Druzes 💥
Israeli forces raided a former air-defence base in southern Syria on Wednesday during a series of airstrikes in the area 🛩 – their farthermost such operation inside Syria.
The airbase, near the city of al-Kiswah, about 6 miles south of Damascus, was previously a strategic base for Iranian militias during Assad’s rule.
Syrian state media reported that the Israeli military had carried out strikes in the same area a day earlier, killing six Syrian troops ⚰️ who had found Israeli listening and spying devices there 🕵️♂️. The troops were in the process of dismantling the devices when they were killed, state media said.
Israeli warplanes and drones 🛸 prevented Syrian forces from entering the area until late on Wednesday night, after Israeli forces had left the site.
A Syrian military source told Al Jazeera that dozens of Israeli troops travelled to the site in four helicopters 🚁 and spent more than two hours there, though it is unclear what exactly they did.
The Israeli defence minister, Israel Katz, posted on X 📱 that forces were “operating in all combat zones day and night for the security of Israel 🇮🇱”, but otherwise offered no explanation.
The Syrian foreign ministry condemned the strikes, calling them a violation of international law ⚖️ and a breach of the country’s sovereignty.
Israel carried out dozens of strikes on weapons depots and military bases after the ousting of Assad in December last year.
It also pushed into the UN-patrolled buffer zone that separated the two countries and established military bases there 🏰.
Israeli strikes on Syria had all but stopped after the US president, Trump, warned Israel to “be reasonable” in Syria, until sectarian clashes broke out in Druze-majority areas in southern Syria in June.
Israel struck the ministry of defence in Damascus and bombed Syrian troops in what it said was an effort to protect Syria’s Druze population 🛡.
Wednesday’s bombings came despite the high-level security talks taking place between Syrian and Israeli officials 🤝. Officials from both countries met in Paris, alongside the US special envoy for Syria, Tom Barrack, earlier this month.
The Paris talks, in addition to meetings in Azerbaijan, are aimed at establishing a security agreement between the two countries that would stop Israeli aggression in Syria and provide security assurances to Israel.
Israeli leaders have repeatedly referred to the new government in Damascus as “jihadist” and have expressed concerns that it could pose a threat to Israelis living close to their shared border. The new government in Syria has not attacked Israel and said it wanted regional peace ☮️, including with Israel.

Israel Has Launched a Strike on Hamas’ Tops in Doha 🚨
Israel has launched a strike on Hamas officials meeting in Qatar’s capital, Doha, reportedly including the group’s chief ceasefire negotiator, in an attack the White House said “does not advance Israel or America’s goals” 😟.
Hamas said six people had been killed, including the son of its exiled Gaza chief, Khalil al-Hayya. It said its top leadership, including the negotiations team, had survived ✈️.
The Israeli strike came hours after its military warned all of Gaza City’s residents to evacuate before a planned offensive to take control of what it portrays as Hamas’s last remaining stronghold, where hundreds of thousands of people are living under famine conditions 🏞.
White House officials later confirmed that the US had been informed in advance of the attack, which took place on the soil of an important regional US ally and a key mediator in attempts to reach a ceasefire in Gaza 🌍.
The impending strike led to a flurry of diplomatic activity, including a warning from the White House to the Qatari government about the attack and a follow-up phone call between Donald Trump and Netanyahu 📞.
The White House appeared to be taking steps to limit the diplomatic fallout from the attack.
“Unilaterally bombing inside Qatar, a sovereign nation and close ally of the United States that is working very hard in bravely taking risks with us to broker peace, does not advance Israel or America’s goals,” Leavitt said 🗣.
“However, eliminating Hamas, who have profited off the misery of those living in Gaza, is a worthy goal. The president views Qatar as a strong ally and friend of the United States, and feels very badly about the location of this attack.”
Netanyahu insisted that the attack was Israel’s responsibility alone, saying in a statement: “Today’s action against the top terrorist chieftains of Hamas was a wholly independent Israeli operation. Israel initiated it, Israel conducted it, and Israel takes full responsibility.” 🇮🇱
Israel said it had launched the attack on Doha in response to a Hamas-claimed shooting in Jerusalem on Monday that killed six Israelis. 💥
Gaza health officials say Israel has killed more than 65,000 Palestinians in the coastal territory.
The attack follows a post on Trump’s Truth Social account two days ago in which he told Hamas it had received its final “warning”. 👌

Gaza health officials say Israel has killed more than 65,000 Palestinians in the coastal territory.
The attack follows a post on Trump’s Truth Social account two days ago in which he told Hamas it had received its final “warning”. 👌

Zelensky Calls On Trump to Remake the Gaza Ceasefire in Ukraine
Zelensky urged Trump to use the momentum of the Gaza ceasefire to broker peace in Ukraine, as the two leaders spoke by phone on Saturday. 📞🌍
Trump and Zelensky discussed Ukraine’s request for the US to allow the delivery of Tomahawk cruise missiles to bolster Kyiv’s ability to conduct long-range strikes inside Russia, among other issues. 🛡✈️
This follows Trump’s suggestion that he had “sort of made a decision” about selling Tomahawks to NATO countries in order for them to be supplied to Ukraine.
“If a war can be stopped in one region, then surely other wars can be stopped as well – including the Russian war,” Zelensky wrote on Facebook, a day after Moscow launched a massive drone and missile attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure that triggered widespread blackouts in Kyiv and elsewhere. ⚡️🚨
“I informed President Trump about Russia’s attacks on our energy system – and I appreciate his willingness to support us,” Zelensky said on X, adding that they had a “very positive and productive” discussion on “concrete agreements” for strengthening Ukraine’s air defences. 🛡
The phone call took place amid mounting concern in Kyiv over both the increasing scale of Russian air attacks and Ukraine’s ability to counter ever more sophisticated aerial assaults involving hundreds of drones at a time, and more effective Russian countermeasures against Kyiv’s air defences. 🛫⚠️
The commander in chief of Ukraine’s armed forces, Syrskyi, warned that Russia was stepping up its air raids against Ukrainian military bases.
Earlier this week, Russia launched 465 Shahed-type attack drones and decoy drones, as well as 32 cruise and ballistic missiles, against Ukraine. 💥
The latest talks between Trump and Zelensky come amid ongoing discussions in Washington over whether to provide Ukraine with the Tomahawk cruise missiles Kyiv has long been seeking, a move Russia’s president, Putin, has warned would be a “completely new, qualitatively new stage of escalation.” 🔥
The phone call between the two leaders comes amid a warming of relations between Trump and Zelensky. 🤝

💥 A New Attack on Ukrainian Military Objects 🇺🇦
Russia launched a barrage of drones and missiles at Ukraine overnight, killing at least four people and damaging energy infrastructure in three separate regions, according to Ukrainian officials. ⚡️
Ukraine’s president Zelensky said Russia had launched more than 450 drones and 45 missiles, most of which were shot down. 🚀
Three people were killed and 12 wounded when a drone hit an apartment building in Dnipro, and another person was killed in the Kharkiv region. 🏚
Energy infrastructure in Kyiv, Poltava and Kharkiv regions was damaged by the strikes, according to the Ukrainian prime minister, Yulia Svyrydenko. ⚙️
Energy companies were working to restore electricity, water and heating provision, while several cities resorted to generators to keep the power on. 💡
Kremenchuk and Horishni Plavni in the central Poltava region, were using generators to maintain water supplies, municipal officials said. 🚰
Zelenskyy called for more sanctions after the strikes. “For every Moscow strike on energy infrastructure – aimed at harming ordinary people before winter – there must be a sanctions response targeting all Russian energy, with no exceptions,” he said. ❄️
Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy sector have increased in recent months, with the military attacking gas facilities nine times in the past two months, according to the state energy firm Naftogaz. ⛽️
On Saturday, Ukrainian drones hit an electricity substation in northern Russia and separately wounded two other people in a strike on a residential building in the city of Saratov. ⚔️
The former Nato secretary general Anders Fogh Rasmussen warned on Thursday that Ukraine was facing a “forever war” and a slow erosion of territory unless Europe increased its pressure on Russia. 🌍
The conflict began in February 2022 when Russia invaded Ukraine, the start of the largest and deadliest war in Europe since the second world war. 🕊

Trump Has Staked His Presidency on a Khamenei Switch-Off From Power
🔤 🔤 🔤 🔤 1️⃣
Trump may not be unafraid to use military force against Iran, according to the White House, but the reality is the US president has few to no options that could obviously help that country’s protest movement, never mind the fact that the history of US intervention in the region has hardly been a success.
Emboldened by the seizure of the erstwhile Maduro, after an operation that took months of planning, Trump talked up military intervention against the Iranian regime with no military pre-positioning having taken place.
In fact, there has been a drawdown in the last few months, reducing military options further.
The US has had no aircraft carriers deployed in the Middle East since October, after two years of near continuous deployment following the Hamas attack on Israel, having moved out the USS Gerald R Ford to the Caribbean in the summer and the USS Nimitz to a port on the US west coast in the autumn.
It means any air or missile strikes against regime targets, and perhaps at the Iranian leader, Khamenei, would probably have to come from or involve US and allied airbases in the Middle East.
An alternative would be similar to June’s long range B-2 bombing mission against the underground Iranian nuclear site of Fordow, although that sort of attack against an urban site would appear to be dangerous overkill.
The US would also have to ask permission to use bases in countries such as Qatar, Bahrain, Iraq, the UAE, Oman and Saudi Arabia (perhaps even the UK’s Akrotiri base in iCyprus) – and protect them and their host countries against retaliation. Even if such assets were not used by the US, Iranian leaders have threatened to strike US bases and ships if the country is attacked.
Although Iran’s military capabilities were badly degraded in the 12-day summer war with Israel, and its air defence systems easily overwhelmed, Tehran has retained a limited missile capability.
Key launch sites remain buried in the mountains, and it has been rebuilding. It is estimated that Iran has 2,000 heavy ballistic missiles, capable, if launched in numbers, of evading US and Israeli air defences.
A more salient question is: what would the US bomb? It would be possible to identify military and civilian sites used by the Iranian regime, but both the protests and the increasingly bloody regime crackdown are taking place across the country.
Targeting is not always accurate, sites can be misidentified and civilian casualties in urban locations would be an evident risk.

And it is not obvious this would be effective on the ground.
It would also not be difficult for the Iranian regime to try to use any US attacks as a rallying point for what is left of its support, given the long history of US meddling dating back to the 1953 CIA coup.
And, however unpopular it may be with ordinary people protesting, the ruling regime does not appear to be brittle or weak, having already survived Israel’s sustained attack in June.
“There is a clearly a cohesive government and military and security service in Iran,” said Roxane Farmanfarmaian, a senior associate at the Royal United Services Institute thinktank.
“The government is showing it doesn’t have any red lines: it is going to secure its borders and streets, and the extraordinary number of body bags reveals its determination to do so.”
The US could consider a direct attack on Khamenei. Trying to kill the Iranian leader would be easier militarily than a Maduro-style seizure operation, which would be considerably more complex than in Venezuela because Tehran lies hundreds of miles from the country’s borders.
However, killing the leader of another country would be astonishingly escalatory, raise a host of legal concerns, and invite a sustained military response.
Nor would it necessarily lead to regime change. During the 12-day war, Khamenei appears to have evaded Israeli detection:
the country’s defence minister, Israel Katz, defence minister said afterwards that “if he had been in our sights, we would have taken him out”.
The Iranian leader had also lined up three senior clerics on a shortlist to replace him if he was killed, in an effort to secure a rapid transition.
Other experts argue that the most likely outcome would be a takeover led by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.
But either way, the Iranian regime remained intact after Israel killed as many as 30 military and security leaders in June.
A handful of US demonstration strikes would be unlikely to change that, while US allies, Congress and Trump himself would almost certainly not want a lengthy campaign.
Already, the president himself has ruled out “boots on the ground”.
Against such an uncertain backdrop, it is not surprising alternatives have been canvassed. The most notable is a targeted cyber-attack, raising the question of what would be intended.
After the seizure of Maduro, Trump claimed that the US had turned off the power in Caracas to help facilitate his capture, but this would only be useful in Iran in conjunction with a military operation.

Several Suicide Bombings and Armed Attacks in Pakistan
The Pakistani army said on Saturday that multiple suicide bombings and armed attacks by “terrorists” in the turbulent southwestern province of Balochistan had killed 33 people, including civilians, while security forces responding to the violence had killed 92 attackers.
Analysts described it as the deadliest day for militants in decades.
During the attacks, Baloch insurgents targeted civilians, a high-security prison, police stations and paramilitary installations.
Eighteen civilians, 15 security personnel and 92 insurgents were killed, the military said.
Although Baloch separatists and the Pakistani Taliban frequently target security forces in Balochistan and elsewhere in the country, coordinated attacks of this scale are rare.
According to the authorities, at least 133 militants have been killed across Balochistan in the last 48 hours, including 92 on Saturday.
The army and Pakistani interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said the attackers had the support of India.
There was no immediate response from New Delhi, which has denied such allegations before.
The BLA has released videos showing female fighters taking part in the attacks, apparently as part of propaganda efforts to highlight the role of women among the militants.
Shahid Rind, a spokesman for the Balochistan government, said most of the attacks had been foiled.
They came a day after the military said security forces attacked two militant hideouts in the country's southwest this week, killing 41 insurgents in separate shootouts.
The chief minister of the province, Sarfraz Bugti, wrote on Twitter that the security forces were pursuing the insurgents. He said at least 700 insurgents had been killed by security forces in the past year.
Dozens of insurgents also attacked a prison in Mastung district, freeing more than 30 inmates, police said.
In other attacks, militants tried to storm the provincial headquarters of paramilitary forces in the Nushki district, but the attack was repulsed, police said.
The insurgents threw grenades at the office of a government administrator in the Dalbandin district, but a quick response from the security forces forced them to flee, according to local authorities.
Attacks on security posts in Balincha, Tump and Kharan districts were foiled, while in Pasni and Gwadar, insurgents tried to kidnap passengers traveling on buses along highways, police said.

“Trump's New Attacks On Iran Would Devastate The Middle East”
🔤 🔤 🔤 🔤 1️⃣
The US has launched new airstrikes against Iran, hours after Trump threatened to escalate the conflict unless Iran stopped attacking ships in the strait of Hormuz.
Iran, which was burying its former supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, on Thursday, responded by targeting US-allied Kuwait and Qatar and accused the US of striking near its sole nuclear power plant.
The tit-for-tat strikes were the largest since Tehran and Washington signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on 17 June aimed at extending the ceasefire and giving space for negotiations for a permanent truce.
They came as Israel’s defence minister Katz said his country was prepared to resume its military campaign against Iran if needed, threatening to do so “with even greater force”.
Sirens sounded at least three times in Bahrain, where the US navy’s fifth fleet is headquartered. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it fired 10 ballistic missiles at Jordan’s Azraq military base on Thursday afternoon, which the US air force uses. There were no immediate reports of any damage in Jordan or the Gulf.
In Iran, officials said strikes targeted the perimeter of Iran’s only civilian nuclear plant in Bushehr province, an area where the UN’s nuclear watchdog has previously warned that attacks could “pose a very real danger to nuclear safety”.
“Several areas in Bushehr province were targeted today, including the perimeter of the nuclear power plant, a military base in the town of Choghadak and a fishing pier in the south of the province,” said Ehsan Jahanian, the deputy governor of Bushehr, adding there were no reports of casualties so far.
The attacks came hours after Trump said the MoU was “over” because of Iranian attacks on ships in the strait of Hormuz.
“This is in retribution for yesterday’s bombing of ships by Iran. If it happens again, it will get much worse!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. Hours before, he had promised strikes would not lead to long-term fighting but would be “very fast”.
His comments and the exchange of fire prompted worries that the ceasefire could break down and raised concerns about the long-term prospects of negotiations.
Significant gaps remain between the two countries over issues such as Iran’s control over the strait, as well as inspections of nuclear facilities.

Back-and-forth attacks have happened since the MoU was signed, but Thursday’s strikes were the most intense in weeks. The attacks caused oil prices to rise, before they recovered later in the day after calm was restored.
They came as Iran prepared to bury Khamenei in his home city of Mashhad. A fighter jet escorted the plane carrying Khamenei’s coffin amid the tense security situation. Crowds of people gathered for the occasion, some holding banners promising vengeance against the US.
More than 10 million people took part in a funeral procession for the late leader in Iraq, according to an Iraqi official, while thousands rallied in the southern suburbs of Beirut in a ceremony organised by Hezbollah on Wednesday night.
Observers waited to see if Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, would attend the burial. He was wounded in the same series of strikes that killed his father and has since communicated only through written statements.
The US military said it hit about 90 targets in Iran, showing footage of strikes on missile launchers and a runway.
Iran accused the US of war crimes after it said two bridges in the eastern provinces leading to Mashhad were targeted. The bridges constitute key infrastructure for Iran’s cross-border trade with China, which has sharply increased since the start of the war.
Trump has repeatedly threatened to hit bridges, power plants and other civilian infrastructure in Iran. Targeting civilian infrastructure if it is not a military objective could amount to a war crime.
Iranian state media also reported explosions in several cities, including Bushehr, which houses Iran’s nuclear power plant complex. At least three people were killed in Iran’s south-western Khuzestan province, while a firefighter was killed in an airport in the south-eastern city of Iranshahr. Nine members of Iran’s military also died in strikes on Wednesday.
The US attack came after Iran struck three ships in the strait of Hormuz on Tuesday. Iran stopped virtually all shipping out of the strait during the war, sending global energy prices soaring and putting pressure on Trump domestically before midterm elections.
Iran continues to view its control over the strait as an important source of leverage in its negotiations with the US, while Trump appears to view strikes on Iran as a way of increasing pressure on Tehran.
Iran’s navy claimed in a statement that the number of ships transiting the strait had been restored to 50% of prewar levels and that permission to go through the strait was only being given to ships using routes designated by Iran. It further warned that any further US military action would trigger a “crushing response”.
Mediators attempted to de-escalate tensions between the US and Iran in an effort to salvage negotiations. The Qatari prime minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, a key intermediary between the countries, said in a local Arabic press that “Trump's new attacks on iran would devastate the Middle East and bring about the most undesirable consequences one can imagine”.
